Lync sign-in before transition to Office365

All - we have our transition planned for the 03rd Feb 2012 and have allready finished the checklist for administrator before transition.
One question: I have installed Lync on my own laptop using bpos with the sign in tool till the transition. I experience the problem that I cannot sign in with Lync on my laptop but can sign in with Lync on my iPhone with the new Lync App for iPhone.
Does any one now if this is by design that I cant sign in on a laptop before transition to Office365?
Thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert,
we also have checked the checklist provided by MS.
So we have Lync installed and working before our transition to Office365. But we had to define the Lync-URL manually to "sipdir.online.lync.com:443", you can do this in the settings --> Advanced.
Now it is working fine...
Greetings

Hi Marc,
thanks for your information. I also tried it with the Lync-URL - but still not luck.
Did you have OCS enabled in BPOS?
I will check the DNS settings for Lync - maybe there is a problem.
Thanks,
Robert

Yes, we have OCS enabled.
I don't know if it matters but we also have registered the SRV-Entries in the DNS-System as it is described in the checklist for administrators.
Hope it will help!

I have double checked the DNS-SRV entries and it looks as described in the checklist. But I cant still sign in on my laptop. The "funny" thing, is that I can sign in on my iPhone.
Anyone from MS here to help to resolve this issue???
Thanks,
Robert

Thank you for this bit of very valuable information.
Why does MS have to make this so difficult? This URL should have been configured in the setup install. I have spend at least 4 hours trying to discover why this isn't working. UGH!!!!
Now I need to know why my Windows 7 machines are not allowing users to access BPOS after updates required for Office 365 were run. Tearing my hair out about now.

Hi Fran, Marc, Robert interesting thread. So about 3 months back we moved all OCO users over and into Lync Online, with Lync Online having a Forest Trust setup, so users in BPOS could use Lync Online using their BPOS credentials. With this in place that is when we started telling people they could upgrade Communicator to Lync and start using the new Lync Online Services, features/functions, like Conferencing, IM and Presence from the same client instead of needing to use LM for conferencing and Communicator for IM/Presence.Ok with all that being said there are different settings for Lync Online than from OCO/OCS. As mentioned above you will need to create some DNS _srv records, which will instruct BOTH your Lync client and Mobile Phone to connect to the proper service. Here are the DNS entries that I pulled out of my Office 365 tenant for the ryshouse.com domain, which tell me to create several records:Microsoft Lync Online
Create these DNS records to configure your domain to use Microsoft Lync Online for instant messaging.

Using the above allow both my Lync client and Windows 7 Mobile phone to use the service.Note - If once you create these records and still are unable to connect, you will want to check your Lync client to see if it is manually configured, in the tools --> Options --> Personal --> Advanced settings. If it is configured, it should either use the sip.[domain].com, which then redirects to sipdir.online.lync.com and or to set the connection setting to Automatic and the client picks up these DNS entries by both Lync client and Mobile phones. The Mobile Phone MUST have the Lync rich client installed to use Lync Online, as there is no Web client for LO at this time. The LyncDiscover.[domain].com which redirects to webdir.online.lync.com is for the new Lync Online Webscheduler, which is another option to schedule online meetings if you don't want to use the Lync Outlook Add-In.HTH

Thanks robert,
However.....the error message that I receive when attempting to sign onto BPOS and Lync are the same....server is temporilty unavailable......and only on the Windows 7 operating systems.
all of the DNS and CNAME records have been updated and are correct.
I don't have this problem when I disconnect the Windows 7 from our domain and I don't have this problem on any other operating system while connected to the domain.
Makes me think it's a firewall issue. However, why can the other operting systems get through the firewall....and Windows 7 can not. Opened 443 on the firewall. Didn't work.
All users with Windows 7 machines are now dead in the water trying to use Microsoft Online Services. Can't log into email except through web app. And can't use IM or Sharepoint because can't connect to Microsoft server.

Ryan, thanks for your answer.
As Fran_IT I also have the correct DNS (SRV and CNAME) settings already implemented and checked the DNS settings once again.
I cannot check if I experience the same problem as Fran_IT as I only have Windows 7 clients installed on our network.
As I said before, I can sign in with the Lync iPhone App but not able to sign in on any Windows 7 client.

Hi Ryan, may have solved it.
Windows Update KB976932 - uninstall it.
This worked in July 2011 when I had the same issue with trying to log into BPOS. Worked today when I uninstalled it from one Windows 7 machine.
I found 3 more Windows 7 machines that had no problem logging into BPOS or Lync 2011. They have automatic updates turned off and do not have KB976932 Windows update installed.

Windows Update KB976932 - uninstall it.
This update is SP1 for Windows 7, isnt it?
I have checked the updates on the clients, but SP1 / KB976932 isnt included in the updates to uninstall. I figured out, that Windows 7 incl. SP1 is installed on the clients and thats why I cant uninstall it. Can someone confirm this?
Any other solution on how to fix this Lync sign in problem?
Thanks!

Robert, lets discuss this in the thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bpostransition/thread/a4afb1a8-0b70-4cf1-9463-8f07badaf2da since Fran has indicated the issue is occuring again. I would not recommend removing SP1 from Windows 7 as a solution. Lets try and get to the bottom of the issue.

No this update is not SP1 for Windows 7. This update appeared in 2011 sometime. On my new Windows 7 machines, I do not see this particular update. I am in process now of uninstalling updates one by one to see which one is doing this. I'll keep you posted if I find it.
I stand corrected. I see this update (KB 976932) is SP1. On my new machine, SP1 must have been installed with the machine. I don't have it listed on the updates list. So no matter how many updates I remove, I'm not gonna get to it.
Please MS - help us with this soon. - thanks

Thanks Fran, this is a great find from you, great detective work :-) We at MS are always getting the latest and greatest patches/updates are pushed out to us and so far I have not seen this issue. Let me double-check my machine and see if this update is installed on my machine.
If you can respond back to this thread and let everyone know whether this update IS causing Lync connectivity issues, we can get this to our Support team and our Engineering teams to have them investigate and see what is going on!
So overall you have DNS settings, properly machine configuration and everything works WITH THE EXCEPTION of machines with the Windows Update KB976932 installed?
Please let us know :-)
Thanks for all the updated info, great work and if we can narrow this down to this update, we can definitely take it from here, escalate and see what is going on!

Hi Robert, can you check and see if your machine has the Windows Update KB976932 installed on your problem machine? Fran is saying that once this was uninstalled, his Lync client was able to connect.
If this does not work, would you be able to take a network trace, maybe using WireShark? I'm an old Networking guy and should be able to figure out if this is a name resolution, IP connectivity, routing, etc issue...as the network never lies :-) I have no doubt that your DNS settings are properly setup, but obviously something is going on here! based on your above, if your phone works but your PC does not, then obviously something on that PC is causing the issue, possibly that Windows Update KB976932 install!
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5842
Since this SP1, uninstalling the entire SP1 is not good, especially since other updates are probably good and should be used. I'll pass this along to our Engineering teams and see if they know anything about what could cause a Lync connection issue!
..more to come!

Yes Ryan, everything you said is correct. All machines are connecting with the exception of my new Windows 7 machines that appeared to have SP1 installed by manufacturer. The Update is not listed as an installed update, however SP1 is installed. Remember that this only happens when I connect the computer to our Domain. If I disconnect the Windows 7 computer from the Domain, I can log into both BPOS and Lync.
the Windows 7 machines that are older, at least 6 months old, where the install came as part of Windows Updates, I uninstalled the KB 976932 and now those machines can sign onto BPOS and can sign on to Lync.
fyi, I have a support ticket also into Microsoft Online. I have transferred the log files and MOSDAL reports to them. They don't have an answer either. My support ticket # is 120130-002127 if that's of value to you

The log for Lync indicate:
02/04/2012|15:25:51.554 1A78:17C4 TRACE :: no common auth protocol, this could be normal if app try with other protocols
02/04/2012|15:25:51.554 1A78:17C4 ERROR :: OUTGOING_TRANSACTION::ProcessAuthRequired - getting best auth challenge failed
02/04/2012|15:25:51.554 1A78:17C4 ERROR :: OUTGOING_TRANSACTION::ProcessAuthRequiredResponse - ProcessAuthRequired failed 80ee0010Several threads on the same issue for O365 indicate:
- Kerberos failure due to time skew (may want to verify time on machine vs. internet time source)
- Protocol (443) blocked via proxy
- Trusted Sites/Intranet Sites not set properly in IE (*.microsoftonline.com, *.microsoft.com, etc.)The SSO client indicated a timeout when attempting to connect. NetMon can help with diagnosing that.
Also, the (System) Event Logs are indicating the machine can't contact a DC/logon server to verify authentication. If you are using a proxy that requires authentication, this could be blocking the traffic for the SSO client and Lync client (though not sure why Outlook would still function).
Let me know if this helps.

My issue with the Windows 7 and SP1 was solved today by disabling the firewall on my router. Wide open - no issues...hate the thought of a wide open disable firewall.
Going to replace the router on Monday. But I'm now ready for transition to O365. A gold letter day!

I have turned on logging on the Lync client and analyzed the "Communicator-uccapi-0.uccapilog" with Snooper from the Lync Server ResKit.
The following error is showing in the log:
02/12/2012|19:45:06.256 224C:1B78 INFO :: SIP/2.0 401 Unauthorized
It seems that Lync / Office365 doesnt know me or I doenst have a valid licence. I didnt find a way to change that, as I am not transitioned yet to Office365 I cant find the admin section. Also in the BPOS admin portal Office Communications Online is activated.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks,
Robert

I have several users experiencing the same issue (as am I).
- All DNS entries are entered and correct.
- My machine (Windows 7, Office 2007, SP3 uninstalled due to the issues with the original Lync installation/setup process that required the registry edits prescribed in the manual setup process)
- All other windows/office 2007 updates have been applied to the machine
- The setup tool has been run in the past successfully. When I run the setup tool now it fails with an error of 1603.
Currently I'm attempting to track down why the setup tool fails with an error of 1603, but why would we need to re-run the setup tool again once it has been run already?
Was there a change to the Lync Online servers that Microsoft hasn't told anyone about? Lync worked fine within my organization up until 2/10/2012. Was there another Windows/Office update pushed around that time that is now interferring with Lync Online?
None of the above worked for me.
The fix that worked for my organization is below:
- Open Lync.
- Click on the Cog Icon in the top right corner OR click on the drop down arrow near
the Cog icon Select Tools > Options. - Click on Personal (in the menu on the left)
- Change
the Sign-in address to: FirstName.LastName@company.microsoftonline.com - Select Advanced
- Select Manual configuration
- Internal Server name or IP Address: sipdir.online.lync.com:443
- External Server name or IP Address: sipdir.online.lync.com:443
- Click Ok.
- Click Ok again.
- Click Sign-In
- The first time you login it should error out.
- The 2nd box should display a Server username, change this to: FirstName.LastName@companydomain.com
- Attempt to Sign-In, this time you should be allowed to sign in
-
2012年2月16日 上午 09:17Guys - it is still not working!
It seems that also Microsoft doesn't have a solution for me and that's I have decided to wait until we are transitioned. I hope to fix the problem with re-assigning the Lync licence. If the problem also after the transition have not been fixed, I will open a ticket.
Thanks,

Robert,
When you installed the Lync client, did you have the SSO client reconfigure the application?
