Storage Migration from VMM with Second Disk on Different Volume?

Answered Storage Migration from VMM with Second Disk on Different Volume?

    Hello,

I'm currently upgrading our SAN and everything has been going smooth so far with QSM on VMM 2008 R2. The migrate storage feature has been working really well up until this point.

I now have a VM that looks like this:

    VM Location: K:\VM\<vmname>

    Primary Drive: K:\VM<vmname>

    Secondary Drive: W:\VM<vmname>

The issue is that when I try moving the VM and primary drive, but leaving the secondary drive where it is the move fails because the secondary drive location is not changed.  I don't see any way to remove the secondary drive from the move wizard though?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hello ShaunInCali,

Storage Migration wants to try to move all drives therefore you are getting fails.

I recommend you to shutdown VM.

Remove Secondary Drive from the configuration.

    Refresh.

Storage Migrate VM to new location.

    Add Secondary Drive to VM.

    Start the Virtual Machine.

Hope that will be helpful for you.

    Sincerely,

    Murat Demirkiran

    Thanks Murat,

I was really hoping that wouldn't be the answer as I now have to manually move these machines...

    Oh well...

    Thanks for your help.

    WARNING!! WARNING!! WARNING!!

You CAN NOT use VMM to "remove" the secondary disk from the configuration as it will DELETE the .vhd!!

You MUST go to the host and and detach the drive from Hyper-V Manager.

I hope this helps someone in the future from making a big mistake :)

    Tena,

Remove does not delete the VHD.

As attaching VHD, you can detach also vhd.

But this progress must be done without secondar vhd.

    Sincerely,

    Tena ,

Can you please test to remove disk from configuration?

Normally it is like the same as Hyperv Manager.

    Sincerely,

    Hi Murat,

I've tested this and validated that on my 2008 R2 VMM installation Remove actually deletes the .vhd.  I thought this was normal behavior.

Also note that when I remove a VM via VMM it deletes all VM content from the host as well as opposed to removing the VM from Hyper-V Manager where it does not delete the VM content.

Note that my tests are conducted by RDP'ing into the VMM machine which is running Windows 2008 R2 SP1.

    Thanks.

    Hello Tena,

"Remove actually deletes the .vhd. " If you remove VM means delete all files yes you are right.

But if you remove VHD means detach VHD, must be the same in VMM 2008 R2.

Are you saying Remove VM or Remove (detach) VHD?

    Sincerely,

    Murat Demirkiran

If I try to "Remove" a disk from the configuration of a VM using VMM it DELETES the .VHD.

If I try to "Remove" a disk from the configuration of a VM using Hyper-V Manager it DETACHES the .VHD.

Note, during my testing I have a secondary hard disk connected via a SCSI adapter, maybe the SCSI .vhd's are treated differently than the IDE ones?

By the way, I even get a prompt from VMM stating "This action will delete the .vhd files".

    Hi,

I confirm that the "Remove" option on SCVMM will delete the disk (.vhd) from the vm folder

and for SCSI or IDE disk, there is the same result,

SO BE CAREFUL with this option

    best regards
