Hello Skoodoo,
As you have a failover cluster, you would have more than 1 network adapter and if you unplug the one that has been connected to external virtual switch, then cluster will still see that host available but vm's rely on that external adapter will not be accessible from network. You can check the following picture, it has been taken from cluster manager / networks.

By the way, please also provide network settings of all network adapters on the cluster nodes.

Do you have guest VM failover configured? Or do you have HA enabled for these VMs?

Hi,
Based on your description, there are three NICs(management .heartbeat and VMs network) on the Hyper-V cluster node. So in Networks hive of your Failover Cluster console, you will be able to see two or three networks. Right click on each of them, just check the box “Allow cluster network communication on this network” on the heartbeat network(check Erkan’s screenshot), leave this box on other networks uncheck. Now disable the heartbeat network on the active node to perform a simulate failure of the network adapter, you will be able to find that the VMs on this node failover to available nodes in the cluster.
