To enable the Microsoft® Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Manager MMC:

NOTE: The Hyper-V Manager MMC is automatically installed when the Hyper-V role is enabled on full installations of Windows Server 2008.

    1.       Launch Server Manager from the Start menu.

    2.       Click Add Features.

    3.       Under Remote Server Administration ToolsàRole Administration Toolsà

    a.       Enable Hyper-V Tools and click Next.

    4.       Click Install.

    5.       After the reboot, go to Administrative Tools in the Start menu and click on the Hyper-V Manager.

    6.       On the left side of the MMC window, click on Hyper-V Manager.

    7.       From the Actions menu, click Connect to Server, select Another Computer and enter the name or IP address of the server you want to connect to.

I have installed the Windows 2008 without Hyper-V edition. The hyper-v manager tools are not available on this version. How can i install the hyper-v manager mmc? The update for Windows 2008 fails.

    Thanks

    Jan

Windows Server 2008 Editions without Hyper-V are bereaved of both the Hyper-V role and Hyper-V Manager.
You cannot install the Hyper-V Management tools through the Server Manager and you cannot install an update to make the Hyper-V Manager available in a supported manner.

    • Update 950500 does not add the ability to install the Hyper-V Manager
    • Update 952627 does not apply to Windows Server 2008

If you want to manage Hyper-V from Windows Server 2008 install Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V. Alternatively install a Windows Vista SP1 Management Workstation or use Powershell and/or WMI to manage Hyper-V remotely.

Hmmm... I would have thought that even 'Windows Server 2008 Editions without Hyper-V' would have had the ability add the Hyper-V MGMT MMC. Mental note now made to remember this, thanks Sander.

This is really  bizarre behavior IMHO.  I installed x86 Server 2008 ( being x86 it has no concept of without Hyper-V ) and yet I was able to install the MMC with a little help from a thread showing me how.

Now I can understand there being a x64 w/o Hyper-V because you don't want to include the beta bits that RTM'd with Server 2008 but I can't understand why it would be impossible to manage a hyper-v server.

Does anyone have an explanation or expected resolution of this?
