Host on-line guest Backup issue

Hi
We have set up a Hyper-V server and curently have 4, quite different, guests running in it. One is running SBS2003, one is running windows 7 pro and 2 are running server 2008 R2. When backing up the host server via windows server backup 3 of the guests backup as a on-line backup but one of the 2008 R2 servers enters a save state for the backup.
I have been looking through all the forums and white papers I can find but can not find a reason for why this one guest doesn't backup on-line like the rest. The guest meets all the requirments I can find:
- All disks used within the VM are basic
- The integration services seem to be installed and all enabled
- No errors are logged in the event logs that I can find
Can any one help find the cause of this issue.
Regards

Hi!
What applications are running on the 2008 R2 server? Any iScsi or network attached drives installed?

Exchange 2010 is the main application running on it. Exchange has all roles installed except the Edge Transport Role. It also has the components to support UM for Lync, WSUS and the Dynamics CRM E-mail Router installed. Nothing unusual realy.
No iScsi or network attached drives. The host is all directly attached SCSI arrays and the guest is only using VHD files.
Thanks for the Help.

You can check with this blogpost if your server matches any on the listed criteria that would disallow online backup:

Thanks for the link it's more in depth then any of the ones I found and may contain the solution. I'm going to list all of the possible issues from the link and if they apply or not below just encase it helps some one else at some point:
• Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is not installed or disabled. - It is installed and enabled
• VM has one or more dynamic disks. - No dynamic disks are present
• VM has one or more non-NTFS based volumes. - All volumes are NTFS
• The VM Cluster Resource Group in a cluster setup is offline. - It is a single server so NA
• VM is not in a running state. - The VM is Running
• Shadow storage assignment of a volume inside the VM is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself. - Aha, the C: drive was set to use the D: drive as it shadow copies!I have set the C: drive on the guest to use it self for shadow copies and will post the results ASAP.

Success! Why that simple fix was not mentioned in any of the information I found, I wish I knew.
You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you, it was driving me crazy!

If your ICs are not up to date with the hypervisor then it might fail - it isn't a case of only being installed. Update the ICs to make sure their revision matches the hypervisor.
Also, if you are running an applicaiton that is not VSS aware - it can also cause this to happen.
