KB968930 failing to install
- I had 23 updates failing to install saying "Updates not configured properly, Reverting changes". From initial research into error logs and codes, it seems KB968930 is causing the failures. I found that on the client machines, if I select just this update, it will install OK. I can then install all other updates as well. It also works if I select all updates but this one first and install them, they go through. If I then install just KB968930 it work as well. Seems it doesn't like to be in a group of updates?
Anyway the thing is: The updates current status is Approved for Install. I am under the impression that if I now decline this update, will it not install itself (even if already downloaded locally to the client). Is that correct?
How can I best resolve this problem please?

Uhh... honestly!?.... *TEST* on an appropriate cross-section of the machines and platforms deployed in your environment. :-)
In this case, if your testing scenario had included at least one Vista notebook, you likely would have identiifed this issue prior to deploying the bundle of updates to 50-some notebooks.

I've posted two different replies to this message, and *both* of them seem to have gotten lost by the forums site. This is entirely possible Ryek. It sounds as if this update wants to behave as an Exclusive update, but is not coded as one in the metadata.
Can you please post the installation events from the WindowsUpdate.log showing the original attempt to install all 23 updates including KB968930 and the subsequent failures. Also, the logs showing the successful installation of KB968930 plus the second batch of the remaining 22 updates. Ideally this segment should be from the same client system.
If you have any additional examples of the same behavior, which would demonstrate that the issue was not exclusive to a single machine, that would also be useful. MS is taking a look at this situation, but they need the log history to go with the reported behavior.

I can confirm it did not affect just one machine (altough I did not make that clear in the first post, sorry). About 50 of our Vista (x86 and x64) laptops had this problem but not Vista desktops or XP systems. No Windows Server system affected either.

The 0x800f0826 error code on all other updates except KB968930 (which has error code 0x80004002) is what led me to believe that this update was the culprit.

I realize my answer isn't that big of a help, but truly, it's the best one I can offer in this particular situation. If I had a better one, I would share it.
There really isn't anything you can do, beyond testing, that will help protect against unexpected behaviors in update metadata.
The MU/WSUS publishing process is not flawless, and as we've seen in the past couple of months on at least three or four occasions, updates do get out the door with defective metadata.
