Hi! It is maybe a bit late in your investigation...but if you have a spare minute, I ll be glad to show you what is doing GSX Monitor.
Our last version is an interesting tool to get real time Monitoring an automatic reporting on Exchange 2010 environment.

There exists several product that can do more monitoring of your Exchange servers. some do it more basic and monitor only of services ae running, other do a more clever monitoring and can trigger larm when threshold limits is reached etc.
Both IBM and HP ahs good and large tools for this, but they often become overkill and very complex.
A simpler software might be Mailscape http://www.enowconsulting.com/mailscape/overview.asp
