Answered Upgrading Exchange SP1 to SP3 Error

I am in the process of upgrading Exchange 2007 from SP1 to SP3.  I have two CAS servers and two mailbox servers (CCR) in the environment.  I upgraded both CAS servers without issues.  However, I am unable to upgrade the mailbox servers.  I am trying to upgrade the passive node first as suggested.  I get the following error when I try to run setup /preparead or setup /m:upgrade.  This is a very generic error message so I am at a loss as to what the issue is.  Any ideas?

    c:\e2ksp3>setup /preparead

    Hi Mike,
Patching CCR Node is different and I can see by the commands you provided that you have missed that.
If you follow the steps in the Technet Article below, you should be fine.

Copy the files to the local disk on the servers and run it from there. Don't use a network drive.

    Hi Martina,

Those are the instructions I am following.  On step 5 I get the generic error "Exchange Server setup has encountered an error."

I was hoping someone has had this same issue and can point me in the right direction.  The error is so generic I don't know if it's a permission issue or something else.

Ok, I didn't get that cause you posted setup /preparead and H:

Did you start setup.com /m:upgrade from the local disk in CMD (not EMS)?

My apologies, I copied the wrong CMD prompt window.  Yes, I am running from the CMD prompt on the local disk, not a network share.  This is what I get.

Both mailbox servers are Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 x64.

OK, are you running CMD with elevated privileges (run as Administrator)?

You run an unsupported installation. Was the OS upgraded?

    Hello,

Is there are any update on this case. If it still does not work, please check the installation log under the C drive and check whether it provides more  details about this issue.

In addition, you can also refer to the Application log.

    Thanks,

Running CMD as Administrator fixed the generic error message that I was getting.  I am now working through other error messages as they pop up.  Thank you for your help Martina!
