Exchange 2010 server reports back "554 5.4.4 Unable to route due to invalid recipient address" to the user; the email addressess are valid (smtpdiag's are clean). Wondering if it is Outlook names cache issue or if its really a server transport or dns issue. Have not found any search hits on this (other than MSDN related to error coding).
Problem is failry recent, server(s) have been up for several months with no infrastructure or major configuration changes.

Is it possible that when the user is sending the email that the email address in the To field got modified? I've seen similar wierd non routing errors in Outlook when the E-Mail Type is changed by clicking 'Custom Type'. I would have the user create a new email and enter the email address into the To field then check the type of the email address by right click on the address and selecting 'Outlook Properties'. See if SMTP is grayed out.JAUCG

Thanks, that is so far the workaround we tell the users (avoid or delete the auto-complete). What is a bit different in these cases is that usually the corrupted outlook NDR's have funky address aliases returned and we know it is invalid. Some of these other errors show the correct email alias in the return, and the users will say they send successful emails previously and the smtp diags are clean. I will have them check the type...
I want to see if this is a server or client issue... for some reason its cropped up for several users.

Tuesday, June 12, 2012 4:08 PMDoes seem to be Outlook (2007 SP2), since the SMTP diags run clean on the addresses. If it was the server I would think everyone would have the issue. In fact I tried to reply to a vendor email and it failed with the "554 5.4.4 Unable to route due to invalid recipient address". This is a bit annoying to tell users to redo any emails they may send or reply to. I will see if the Outlook 2007/2010 "mailto:" hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2475888/en-us) has any bearing, although still not sure why this all of a sudden is an issue.
