I keep getting errors when using windows update. Mostly error 80070020. I don't know if the updates are downloaded and can't be installed, or are not downloaded at all. I am sorry about the size of my WindowsUpdate .log file but I was hoping someone might have a look at it and see something that may help with this. I tried one work around by turning off WU then deleting temp files in datastor folder then turning WU back on but this did not work. This is some of the file.

I am getting the exact same error when trying to update and it really is bugging me now.

Here's the updates Vista has failed to install:

    KB930857
    KB928089
    KB929427
    KB931573
    KB929735

    And I get this message:

    Error(s) found:

    Code 80070020   Get help

... So I click on Get help, follow instructions, search Microsoft Knowledge Base, search Google in case anyone else has had same problem - and I find this thread which seems to be my only hope of actually being able to update.

Oh, and just so you know - I have downloaded the updates directly from Microsofts website and tried installing them that way ... still no joy!

I am in the same boat.  I get the same error. So far I have not been able to find a solution to this.  This forum is the only that I stumbled upon.  Hopefully someone will respond with a solution.  So far I have had more problems with Vista than any other Windows OS before.

Same problem here.  It started a week ago about the same time my IE began to crash sporadically.  Prior to receiving the 80070020 error I was getting one stating I did not have permissions to perform windows update, a reboot then brought me to this one.

My problem turned out to be my antivirus software (bitdefender). Once I turned off realtime scaning updates worked. I didn't think about it because I didn't have firewall with the antivirus software but that did it! The 80070020 error is very vauge, I searched everywhere and found very little on the web. Basicaly this error meams two processes are trying to access the same resource. Hope this helps

Just wondering how you made out. BTW I really like bitdefender but I am going to use Live Onecare, only because I was a beta tester for live and microsoft gave us a great deal  (three computers for $19.95) for a year. hope you made out OK.

I had bitdefender too and thought I had stopped all the Antivirus processes...After an uninstall and reboot everything worked fine.  I am also using OneCare now.

    Thx!!

Disabling the real-time protection did resolve the issue thanks :-)  But I think I will stick to BitDefender for the time being, though I may try OneCare just to see what it's like.

Thanks guys, you also solved my problem.  I thought my entire installation was screwed up.  I just turned Bitdefender off during the update process and then turned it back on afterwards.

    Thanks!

Glad that worked for you too :)  I'm now trying OneCare out and I gotta say that so far I'm impressed.

I love Vista and I think after my three months trial of OneCare is up I may buy that too ... but we shall see how it pans out.

Big Smile Also using BitDefender, solution works. Note: turning off BitDefender doesn't work, only turning off Realtime Protection by removing the tick from the Realtime Protection checkbox inside the BitDefender main window solves the problem!
    Thanks

Hello, first of all thanks for the fix.  I was just about to throw this computer out the window.  I turned Bitdefender off and all is well and my computer is still in one piece!  However, I update my bitdefender everyday.  I don't think i have this fix patch.  Do you know if it was released?  And if so, how i can get it.

    Hi,

I have BitDefender Antivirus Plus 10.2.  I am having the 80070020 error, too.  The OS is a clean install with only the OS, basic drivers,  and Bitdefender installed.  I got it on the very first Windows Update.

I have also noticed that the crash is associated with "wuaudt.exe".  I can not find it in the Windows' system directory.  Can it be an IE plugin for Windows Update?  It only appears in the memory during the download/install.  Can it be damaged,  or a wrong version?  What if we can find it and delete it.  Won't it force the Windows to re-download the file and fix our problem?

PS.  Today is April 22, 2007.  Where is the Bitdefender patch to fix the problem mentioned in March?

    Johnnie

    Johnnie,

This file c:\windows\system32\wuauclt.exe is the Vista update file (I am informed by the BitDefender Forum).

I allowed this file to communicate in BitDefender Security Suite Version 10.2 firewall settings - but still no joy with my updates.

I still had to disable antivirus real-time protection for the duration of the updates download.

I will ask BD support for further advice.

    Regards,

    Scotty60

    Hi,

Is it "wuauclt.exe " and not "wuaudt.exe" that I saw in the Task Manager?

Anyhow, I did more digging after my post.  I found that the problem was known a long time ago.  "Error 80070020" is a file sharing error.  It would happen to different applications and OS.  Right now, it is just more common with Vista.  In our case, I think, the Windows Update program and the realtime anti-virus program are fighting for the access to the files downloaded from Microsoft by the Windows Update.

Does anyone know where the Windows Update's downloaded files are located or their extension?  Maybe we can exclude them in BitDefender?

    Thanks.

    Johnnie

I have done the same, turned everything off and I still get it, but I also can not access certain webpages like CNN etc....It all started when I was downloading an update for batch of five Vista updates and the connection got interupted...Does anyone have that problem as well or is it just with updating vista?

    /c

    Hi,

My Windows Update is working.  I downloaded and installed Visual C# Express Edition, then I ran Windows Update.  It worked.

To confirm it, I tried it with Visual Basic Express Edition and J#.  The Windows Update still worked.

Is the updates for the Visual Studio Express different from the updates Windows?

I have uncheck the Realtime Protection as well as antivirus, antispam, antispyware, firewall on Bitdefender Antivirus Plus V10.

However I still get the same Error code.

Is it due to I am still using normal dial-up connection at 28.8kbps?

I have had the same problem for the past 2 weeks and have struggled to resolve it.

Looks like you guys have cracked it, I temporarily stoppped BitDefender and all outstanding updates loaded fine.

Not the best practise to shut down your virus protection during downloads though, I assume BitDefender will be investigating this issue with a view to providing a fix, we will see.

I was on the phone with Microsoft tech support for 3 hours trying to fix this problem. (not installing updates) Then I read the entry about Bitdefender....PROBLEM SOLVED!!!. Yes, unchecking the real-time boxes is the key. I also had thought about One Care but after reading Consumer Reports...(no ad's, no bias) they ranked BitDefender #1 and Windows Was ranked almost last. I decided to go with BitDefender. For better or worse. Thanks for the solution!!!

I too get the same error messages 80070643 and 80070020 always when I try to install any Office 2003 updates. I am running Vista Home premium with AVG. I have tried un-installing Office 2003 and re-installing but still get the same errors and cannot install any of these updates

    What can I do

Ps I am a complete novice

I am also using bitdefender 10 plus and I was able to work around the problem by doing the same thing with removing the tick on real time scanning.  Windows Vista seems to be alittle stubborn compared to what I was used to with XP.

After I read all the replies about bitdefender, I did the same thing. It worked. Thanks!

I also had to disable BitDefender Anti-virus Real-time protection; then the updates downloaded and installed OK. I have sent an e-mail to BitDefender tech support. Has anyone using BitDefender received a patch for this?

I have BitDefender V10 Build 247 and I still have to turn real time scanning off to get updates to work.

Yep, had this error happening to me too.  After Googling it, I found a lot of people who have BitDefender had to disable Real time protection (simpling exiting BitDefender won't work) allowed me to complete the update process.

Hi there cfrank...just wanted you to know (plus all the other helpful people out there!) that the tip re: BitDefender was spot on... I had tried various things to get around the problem, including one from Microsoft regarding old temp files etc... needless to say I am glad to be back on track with updates. As for your comment about OneCare v.s. BitDefender. I have been involved with PC's for 25 years and have tried almost all the known anti-virus programs. When I began beta testing Vista (32 & 64bit) I was sad to discover the BitDfender was not compatible. I had been won over by it's rock solid performance. I trusted OneCare for about 4 months but when I began to get bad vibes I tried 3 other anti-virus programs and they discovered (between all 3) a total of 13 infestations... OneCare had let them all in unscathed. So now BitDefender is back on guard and I'm certainly glad to have the peace of mind it provides! Thanks again...

Make shure you have your firewall disabaled, or to allow all, I was getting the same error in XP pro, after doing an allow all(because I use Sygate firewall) I was able to download updated for windows defender.

    Salutations

I encountered the same error when updating my Windows XP SP2. I tried disabling my anti-virus (Norman Anti-Virus) and my firewall (Comodo Firewall) but it did not solve the problem. When I disabled Spybot-Search and Destroy, it did the thing. I can now update my Windows XP system.

I had problems installing Microsoft update KB941649 and I also got the 80070020 error code (5 other updates I downloaded with it using Windows Update installed fine). Digging around led me here. I don't have Bitdefender on my PC, but I tried temporarily disabling my Antivirus and Antispyware software and the update installed ok! I also had problems with another update and discovered that my system needed to validate my version of Windows with "Genuine Windows Advantage" before installing the update. Thereafter everthing worked smoothly. Bar a few minor glitches Vista has impressed me.

    Majkmil,

I am not a technical expert, but like you I had terrible problems trying to download Vista SP1. It always failed at 89%.

You will know if you were successful as the download automatically goes into installation mode and installs 3, one after the other.

Reading on other forums that some programmes can cause problems I contacted my security provider, Bullguard, and they recommended that I disable the anti-virus and spyware module. This worked. So your own problem may be similar. I trust this helps.

After reading your answer on the forum as I also have Bullguard. Vista sp1 is now loading this is is on a machine with Vista home premium with the anti-virus disabled. I also have a machine with Vista business also running Bullguard this updated no problem, without disabling the anti-virus. Thanks for the tip.

I followed the instructions for a clean boot found here ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825 ) and successfully completed the update (then reversed the instructions to get a normal boot).

What I have found is that windows installer 3.1 is effected.

I had to do a rollback & then downloaded windows installer 3.1 again without using window update.  NOw all working.

Just another suggestion for the people who have done a roll-back.

I was also using CA antivirus, also disabled it, and that did not solve the issue.  Is there anyone else with this problem?
