MS Fingerprint Reader / DigitalPersona Password Manager
Hi!
After searching a long time, I still found no solution or hint about getting the MS Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader to work. Although the driver installs fine, the DigitalPersona Password Manager software won't install. What am I supposed to do now? Is there any chance to get the device to work with Windows Vista? Are there any plans at MS to support this feature in the near future? Maybe there is another software on the market? Anybody has a clue?
Thanks in advance!

- Sorry guys, we are aware of this issue and it is my understanding that the M/S Keyboard software for the reader will be updated when Vista is released.
I think this is blocked from installing due to the big changes in the logon system in Vista....

I am having the same problem. Hope someone figures it out.

Sign me up for the same problem. It blows my mind that Microsoft wouldn't have tested and made sure ALL MS branded hardware worked in Vista wayyyy before releasing in beta to the public. The driver may install ok, but as far as I'm concerned, if I can't swipe my finger -- it doesn't work.
Seems to me that would be step 1 in compatibility testing.

I am moving your question to the applications forum, they should be able to provide more guidance, or point you in a better direction.

I have the same issue with the stand alone fingerprint reader, drivers install but no software to enter a fingerprint, etc.
Also with the MS Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, drivers install, both recognize in the system, but only keyboard is actually usable in Vista build 5384... in XP Pro both work perfectly... I've uninstalled and reinstalled etc, any ideas?
- Hey...remember, its still in Beta, thats what Beta releases are all about...working out the kinks.

- I just got my Fingerprint reader a few days ago, for $40, but it seems to only work in Windows XP. I have my laptop tripple-booting as Windows XP Home, Windows Vista Beta, and SUSE Linux 10. The fresh install of Vista does have problems with lots of stuff, in that, it doesn't like to shutdown or reboot. Plugging the fingerprint reader into the USB when the laptop is running Vista is a mystery a lot of times. It looks like I will return the Fingerprint Reader back to the store where it came from and put my money towards something that works.
I also have the fingerprint reader...guys that and Video playlist in windows MCE everyone is asking for it...thanks
same issue for me ...
i've hope they will put the driver in RC1 and no ...
- Using RC1, and still no support for the fingerprint reader. :( BTW, it's free after rebates at Office Depot.

ok waiting RC2 or RTM ...
- MS Fingerprint Reader Home Page states Vista drivers should be available in December 2006.
December? How can we expect drivers from other companies when MS cannot seem to do it?
I am probably considered a MS groupie and even I get disgusted with them.

There is a beta floating around--but they aren't accepting people for it! :(

Wish I knew a way to sign up... the Fingerprint reader is awesome for small children!!
You're missing the main point. Vista RC2, RC1, Beta 2 etc is in Beta form. (WHICH MEANS THAT NOT EVERYTHING WILL WORK FOR EVERYONE) The idea of a Beta release is that we all use at our own risk. It is stated by MS that their Beta product should not be used on a main computer or with programs on your computer that you cannot afford to loose or do without.
If you guys cannot live without your precious fingerprint readers then revert back to XP where it will function without any problems and wait until January when you can buy with your own funds a fully functioning copy of VISTA and if you have any problems then, you will have a ligitimate complaint.
In the mean time enjoy the BETA and stop complaining about MS releasing a BETA product that does not function.
Gimme a break. I agree fully with most of your comments but and can even understand with the Digital Persona stuff being a slight issue (because of third part issues) but to not even have Intellitype or a working program to set up my keyboard buttons?
That is ridiculous! Yeah, I can live without this stuff (never really used the fingerprint reader much anyway because I only wanted to use it to unlock my workstation and MS decided for me that I can't do that on a domain login) but I am pretty sure MS wants us to complain. Why else do they host these forums? You think maybe MS is looking at these once in awhile?
Yeah, save your data, image your machine and backup up whatever. I could take the hard drive out of this machine and throw it in the garbage and be fine. Guess what, I am not a moron. I would not bet my life on Win2k or XP either.

All in good fun-ck
You guys are not Beta Testers. You are looking for a free version of a new OS .
Because there are scores of computer Manufacturing companies, there are bound to be problems with things not functioning properly for everyone. The chances are that everything worked properly for MS in their facility before the beta release. So if something does not function with your machine, MS is looking for feedback from you as to what it is (That is why they take a certain amount of info about what's running on your machine to be able to come up with a fix that might be synonnimous with similar computer systems. They are not looking for whining Brats who expect a fee OS without any bugs.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. They could just as easily release this Beta now as RTM and sell it to us AS IN NO WARRANTY, NO REFUND. Take your pick.
I can use my Beta copy until 5/31/07 before I have to purchase the RTM, how many other companies allow you to do that with any kind of software?
If you want to beta test, then please do so and stop complaining. Better yet start writing your own code.
??
I have every version of every MS OS available to me already so I guess I miss your point. I have Select CDs, MSDN and Technet. As stated in a different posting, I am a MS Groupie. No doubt about it and I don't apologize. They are my bread and butter and have been for 10 years.
However, I take all forums with a grain of salt but as an IS guy, I am often just happy to see that I am not the only guy out there experiencing a problem. If people don't post their issues, then what are we supposed to post out here?
'Dear MS, I am having issues but I guess I had better not complain because I don't want to piss anyone off...and besides, it is free so who am I kidding?'
Yeah, parts of this thread have gone down the tubes but your (and mine too) bitter insults don't help much.
Relax-ck
Don’t know if this helps
There should be latest drivers/software on Digitalpersona web site at DigitalPersona: Customer Service.
Note that you need 3 working components:
- driver
- recognition engine
- application
From your posts I bet, that the main problem is in the “application” under Vista
Hi You can have the digital reader updated from the web from digital personal

- well i know im not the only one with this problem. when using the fingerprint reader and software with vista ultimate, i am constantly getting a lock up situation with IE 7 and using the logon manager. everytime i use a website that has the capability to login, the icon for the manager is slow to come up and if you dont wait on it to load, then IE locks up. you cant do anything, but open task manager and shut IE down. If you sit there and wait 10 minutes or so, you will see IE "catching up" to all the different pages you've visited. this is really a pain on ebay or other forum-type sites. version 2.0.1 was released but the problems still exist. and now for some reason it shows up on the gadget sidebar! the icon appears on the notepad, the new gmail manager, the weather manager, etc. you cant read anything because the icon is in the window of the gadget. need a software update for vista or the login manager software before it will be fixed.
- Any idea if fingerprint support will ever happen on XP64 or Vista 64? It seems the digitalpersona software is done by a third party who don't code for 64? Microsoft should put in BIG letters on the persona hardware "DOES NOT WORK with 64bit systems" ie. just cause it says it's 'compatiable with Vista' doesnt mean it will work!
- Well, it's March now and there is still no D.P. support......what now, Idiot? If they made no attempt to ensure compatibility towards the end of their two-year beta test program, what makes you think they would hold up the release of their over-hyped OS that amounts to little more than a new shell? You're damn right I'm pissed that I spent $200 on this piece of un-stable *** only to not have it work half the time.....Microsoft should stop selling beta-quality software. As for me, I'm switching to Linux....and there are several programs that will take the place of Digital Persona and run the fingerprint reader.
- Man, you are just an idiot. The scenario you describe about them selling the beta as an RTM HAS HAPPENED.
Duane Vista Support wrote: Sorry guys, we are aware of this issue and it is my understanding that the M/S Keyboard software for the reader will be updated when Vista is released.
Well, Vista has been released for some time now.....still no D.P......what now?- Unfortunately DigitalPersona v2.0 for Vista doesn't work. It seems ok registering your fingerprints, but you can rarely get them to recognise them during logon or quick switching users. If you keep your finger there for a few minutes, it sometimes eventually recognises it. Anyone else have this problem?
Hi
I'm exactly in the same situation. I'm running DigitalPersona PW Manager 2.0 under Microsoft Vista (32bit).
The Problem is to log on to Windows :-( I receive an error message => Login failed, unknown user or wrong password. When i push the button "change user" and try it again, it works!?
Entering in password protected websites within vista is working well (no problem). But the login after a reboot or when the pc is locked does'n work.
I'm wondering that hardware from micrsosoft in combination with an operating system from microsoft is not working without problems like this....
Can anybody help?
thanks & regards

- I simply find it confusing why Microsoft did no take their own hardware into cocideration when developing OS's. Yep now that I have upgraded (not by choice) to Vista none of my fingerprint readers work! I would welcome any assistance.
I am looking for a Fingerprint reader that will work with Windows Vista. NYC has began a electronic filing system that requires it to logon to NYC Med System. Any Help???
Same problem here with the version 2.01, internet explorer freezes. Microsoft we want a solution, how can you explain that your own software runs so bad and we only have support for 32 bit? I didnt bought this from "Digital Persona" i bought it with the label "MICROSOFT Fingerprint Reader" and i need it working because i paid it.
Hi,
I do have the same Vista login problem using the Microsoft fingerprint reader and I can't solve it.
But, just on the PC of my wife. My own PC (same Vista edition and many other simularities) works fine. The fingerprint unlocks the PC whenever it's locked with no problems. That means, it propably does work, but I don't know why and how.
Bye Niels (still waiting for a solution for the PC of his wife)
- I am having a problem with the new DigitalPersona password manager 2.0. It works perfect, aside from the fact it won't work with any version of messenger, windows live or msn. When i click add a fingerprint login, it just doesn't do anything. on any page in internet explorer though, it works perfect. I just don't see why its not working in windows live messenger
please help I recently purchased the finger print scanner sold by Microsoft and it works very smoothly except that I can not use it in my regular account with "power user" rights. I am using "windows XP" and not vista but this problem is likely going to be occuring in Vista. In any case I have not found many thing about problems with the password manager so I figure I would try my luck here.
When I use "power user" account, which is my default account for safety reasons, when I feel the info in the password manager, only the finger print logon display any data and the account associated for the finger print logon are not available. This does not occur when I use my admin account.
I believe that this is related to right priviledges to either some files or registry keys. I have checked the %user%\Application Data\DigitalPersona\OTS where it seems that the password manager saves some data and I do have full control. So I am a little lost as too why the information regarding the account are not saved.
Does anyone have the same problem, or does anyone tried to see if this software works for a person whoo is not on the admin list? If so has anyone found a workaround?
Finally were can I repport this obvious bug?
Thanks,
DigitalPersona Password Manager 2.0 is working in domain password? i mean to say when Alt+clt+del press then that software is working or not plz, give me reply as soon as posible.
thanx in advance.

I seem to have a different problem. I've installed DigitalPersona 2.0.1 and the fingerprint reader allows me to register my fingerprints. But when I go to set up a logon for Hotmail, the system tells me that it is not a logon page (or some such). If I go to eBay, I get the same message forbidding me from creating a logon for eBay. This is all quite frustrating in that on my WinXP desktop systems, it all works just peachy, but on my Vista Home laptop, I get these problems. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Anyone have a solution for me? Many thanks for your help in advance!!!

- OK Idi*%, It is now 2009, and still no software for the reader, MS needs to get off their *&% and start supporting the users that keep their paychecks coming. No 64 bit software? Amazing!
Danimal - I have the DigitalPersona software and am running Vista 32 Bit. Whenever I enroll the fingerprints, it works fine, but whenever I attempt to use it with Firefox or whenever I click the Fingerprint Login Manager, I swipe my fingerprint and it says "The user does not exist or the domain is not available"
I have sent my laptop into the repair depot TWICE now and they've replaced every part on the computer including the hard drive and nobody has an answer.
I've called Digital Persona but they won't help either... This is without a doubt the most ridiculous thing I've ever had to deal with...
Is there anybody out there that has an answer???
I recently got a MS Wireless Intellimouse Exporer with Fingerprint reader and installed it on my Vista 32 system (Home Premium)...not a domain member. I already have Intellimouse 6.3 (latest) installed from my previous Wireless Intellmouse Exporer 2.0. I instaled DigitalPersona Password Manager 2.0.1.1843 and everything seems to work fine except for one thing. I can log on to Windows and I can use the reader to create a password logon for an IE web page that needs credentials. That seems to work OK.
The problem occurs when I lock my workstation (Win-L). When the workstation is locked, the tile on the Vista logon screen indicates "Touch the fingerprint reader to unlock". But when I do that, it indicated a bad username or password.
So it works fine when logging on to Windows, but NOT when unlocking a locked workstation. I can still unlock the workstation via normal password entry, but the fingerprint reader fails.
What am I missing or doing wrong?
- I have had the same problem for quite some time... However i have found a fix that works for me and thought i would share it. The problem lies in most Antivirus Software (ADDONS) for IE simply disable the Intrusion Prevention Addon and hey presto DigitalPersona 2.01 from MS site works a charm.

I guess 64bit Windows users (Vista and/or 7) will never use fingerprints for security. this is the message from my 7RC 7100. "
