Mobility Radeon 9600/ATI Chipset Code 43
- I'm sure you're all aware of it. The Code 43 in device manager with several ATI cards which are supposed to be supported. So, what gives? Judging from my research, I've reached the following:
My AGP drivers are probably to blame, but guess who makes my chipset? ATI. It's the RS300 (aka 9100 IGP) with a Mobility Radeon 9600. The card itself is supported by ATI. The catch? They don't support the chipset. This is a laptop, so everything came as a single unit. I call bulls---. Why? Misleading information. They tell me that I can run Vista, but oops, my AGP drivers will never work. When I contacted ATI, they told me to contact the maker of my chipset, even though I said it was an ATI chipset. Do they not get it, or what? I'm quite upset with the entire situation.
Will ATI put in the minor effort to support their own AGP chipset, or will I be stuck with a brick if I choose to use Vista? I'm rather disgusted by their poor approach to the situation. The best part of it all was getting linked to a knowledge base article about nForce 3 being a problem, and how I should contact nVidia. Idiots! Ugh. Thanks in advance if anyone knows a few workarounds. I've tried most of the stuff floating around though...

- Well, according to some research, it seems that the issue may be related to fast writes. I know that my card doesn't like to run without them enabled (they are enabled by default and SmartGart always refused to disable them back in XP). Does Vista handle AGP fast writes poorly? I think this may be to blame. If that is the case, MS may be at fault, and would have to release a patch.
This is all a terrible pain... - hi melchiz... I'm new in thi forum! I'm serching for ati mobility radeon 9600/9700 driver for my video card to use windows vista. I discovered that Ati has released Catalyst7.1 for Vista that contains my driver so when I install it I have a surprise: My screen is turned of and my laptop seems to be dead. I don't know what is the best thing to do....
I have the same problem. I have a toshiba p30 laptop and an ati radion 9700 graphics card. I also get the same error with the driver in windows vista.
I reinstalled xp just to look at the device manager to compare the 2. the main difference is the computer driver in xp displays as ACPI multiprocessor PC. In vista it displays as ACPI x86 - based PC. Also under system in vista the ATI RS300/RS300M Accelerated Graphics Port is missing.
My laptop worked fine in windows xp. Come on microsoft, sort it out!!!
I have the same problem. My barebone Asus T2R . with chipset ati rs300 don't work with the wddm drivers of vista for ati x1600pro 512 mb. I found this partial solution: i have installed the gart driver of 7.1 catalist ati version for xp, then the xp driver for my x1600pro. All work fine (test with 3d benchmark and games are ok) but Aero don't work 'cause the driver for xp are not wddm and aero is activable only with this kind of drivers.

I tried to install xp DNA driver in the past: this driver was recognized but there were various problem, I think linked to opengl(TM) and AGP fast write. Now I can try with newest driver for xp! So I know, "googling", that Aero theme is activable changing specific keys in the registry. There are programs do it, as tweakVista, even if you haven't the WDDM driver...I will try and post my results...
Why Mycrosoft doesn't resolve this problem with a fix? I think this video driver problem was known because in november and december in internet there was the list of supported video cards for Vista with their drivers, so the drivers for ati mobility radeon 9xxx weren't downloadable!!
I have the same laptop, Toshiba Satellite P30 with ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 and under MS Vista, the device driver reports Code 43 error.
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43). Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.
This is really sad knowing the laptop has top notch hardware specs: P4 3.33Ghz, 1.5GB ram, 120GB HD 7200 rpm. It is only 1.5 years old.
This video card never had a driver for Windows 2000, why should it have for Vista?? This is the message ATI or Microsoft is providing since the operating system's graphic device driver interface has changed drastically, and ATI or Microsoft do not want to invest in older hardware.
I want to share an experience: In 1998 I paid $1,000 to buy Dimond Viper 9000 video card, it was the fastest and the most amazing video card based on specs, but did not provide device drivers for Windows 98. It was not a pleasant experience, to this day I would never purchase "anything" Dimond manufactures, in fact they are not in the video card business any more.
I feel ATI started following the Diomond Viper tradition, by not providing a driver solution. Both Microsoft and ATI is responsible providing a proper WDDM driver.
However ATI says they are not in business providing device drivers contact Toshiba. I am totally confused, who is reponsible to provide the device drivers: 1. Microsoft 2. ATI 3. Toshiba
In my opionion all of them responsible since all require each other's efforts to provide a solution.
What can consumer do if they do not come up with a supported product. They can stop buying their product. In Microsoft case, we can stop ugradingVista and educate public on code 43 error for recent hardware purchases, and in ATI case we can look at nVidia, and in Toshiba's case we can go for HP.
ATI must take more leadership ensure that their "recently manufactured and sold" cards have proper drivers. Microsoft has the power to push ATI for this.
Please speak up so consumers are not being ripped off by Video card manufactring companies.

Marc
- I tried to install omega driver for ati mobility radeon 9600 series AGP and I disabled fast write. All seem to work fine even if windows Aero doesn't work (and windows DreamScene too :-(...). But when I turn off the computer I've a new surprise!!!The famous blue screen that say that an ati driver is incorrect...bo! I will try so long....
- I did find a way around all this mess, and am running Vista in full res on my Compaq R3000 (identical to a bunch of the HP laptops). No glass, but I didn't expect that right now. First of all, there is a driver that Vista does not install for the IGP chipset. I took the latest version of the graphics card install for XP from the HP website, and tried to install. It failed, but I expected that. It expands into a directory on the drive (usually c:\swsetup\ and the number of the driver pack). Then, in device manager, I went to System Devices, and looked until PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge. There should be two of them...one of them needs a new driver. If you look in the properties, it should be PCI bus 0, device 1. Go to update driver, and go through to the have disk section. Navigate to the swsetup directory with the graphics driver (for me it was c:\swsetup\SP37091\) and go into the GARTnt directory. The .inf you are looking for in GARTnt.inf. This should enable AGP functions (and Direct3D) in Vista. Post-install it was labeled ATI RS300/RS300M Accelerated Graphics Port. As far as the Radeon driver goes, I found that omega drivers version 3.8.205 was able to install (later ones gave me a blue screen). The installer didn't work, but when I used update drivers for the card the .inf from the omega install directory worked just fine (C:\Program Files\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.205\2KXP_INF\CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.inf). This worked for me...and can run World of Warcraft in decent FPS.
andreasfunke , thanks a lot for this post ; I looked for a solution to this problem for weeks... it worked for me too ...
shame on ATI ... and MS for redirecting with its auto hardware updates , always and always , toward those stupid ATI drivers...
once again , thanks to you
pierreCould someone please post a link for Radeon Omega Drivers v3.8.205. I've searched the web and cannot find them.
Many Thanx
- here we go....
http://www.omegadrivers.net/archive.php Problem solved, but the omega drivers didnt work. However I can now gig a step by step of how to get the radion display drivers working for toshiba laptops and such like.
I downloaded the display dreivers for windows xp from toshibas website.
In device manager, I went to System Devices, and looked until PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge. There should be two of them.
If you look in the properties, it should be PCI bus 0, device 1. Go to update driver, and go through to the have disk section. Navigate to the directory with the graphics driver you downloaded for xp and go into the GARTnt directory. The .inf you are looking for in GARTnt.inf. This should enable AGP functions (and Direct3D) in Vista. Post-install it was labeled ATI RS300/RS300M Accelerated Graphics Port.
Go to display adaptors in device manager and select to update driver for radion card. search windows drivers for VGA display adaptor and install it.
reboot system then on startup go back to device manager and click to update the vga display adaptor. point it to windows xp driver. It should then successfully install and require reeboot. After reebot you should have optimum resolution, however no glass as 9700 not capable.
Phew at least we got there between us in the end. So much for ati & microsoft waste of space.

- wow!! well done.......did that and worked ....that one was drivin me nuts....thank yous. think the ati unified avstream driver is safe to install...after all that
Hi There,
Just to let you know, I followed your instructions and everything worked out well. I even have the aero glass that you say the 9700 is not capable of.
Not sure why you don't have it but mine works great! No BSOD after re-boot and works every time. The only time I get a BSOD is if I try to refresh the Vista Experience number.
Thanks again!!
Andy
- does anyone know the registry keys to activate areo theme on a graphics card that it doesnt work with. I heard you can change something in the registry to enable the glass effect?
Hi again,
I have a Toshiba-P30 with 1GB ram and the ATI 9700 mobility video card. What I did was leave the Vista video driver installed, updated the PCI to PCI bridge with the AGP inf from XP, re-booted the system, then updated the Vista Ati driver to the standard video driver, re-booted the system and then updated the standard video driver with the the toshiba xp version. I have the aero theme and glass effect in-tact. I was also able to load the ATI control panel from the toshiba driver and have it working as well. The only thing is the help file won't work. I've got the 1440x900 resolution working well. The only time I get the blue screen of death is if I try to update the Windows Experience Index number.
Hope this helps,
Andy
hi again
what you describe above, isnt that what i did in my post? what have u done differently ect as i cant work out the difference and how you got glass and i havent
Yes, it was your post that made this work for me. I'm not sure why you don't have the glass effect either. If you like I will send you a screen print of my desktop to show you. I can't seem to paste one here.
Andy
I have the very same laptop and have tried what you have suggested however the files that you mention are not in the ones that I downloaded. Do you have a link to where I can download these drivers? I have also tried to uninstall the driver that vista installs but as soon as I do vista sees that there is no driver and installs the same driver again.
Thank you,
Angi
How much RAM do you have in your P30? I have the 512mb model and am unable to get Aero to work, even with registry hacks. Andy said he had the 1gb model so I'm guessing that's the difference.
To be honest, I'm just glad to finally have display drivers working and an optimal resolution.
My laptop has 1GB of ram. I retried the installl of the driver again. But Vista for some reason loves that driver it installed
Angi
hi! I installed windows vista ultimate to try to resolve the video problem again following the instruction in this forum...I have used omega driver 3.8.205 and hp gartnl...The video adapter seems to work but I must try a pc game first...but aero doesn't work even if I use various tweaking programs as tweakvista or changing the registry keys...I hope to find a solution!!!
amd athlon xp-m 2600+
1GB ram ati radeon 9600 64mb ram
It worked for me, but that's not a permenant solution for me. Is there any news ?
Has anyone heard of any updated drivers coming from ATI? (Posted the wrong link before Ivantornabene, my apologies)
I did have Vista loaded but removed it for a couple of reasons (1 being Aero was not working) and I had tried 7.2 but it did not work. I also tried rolling back the driver but Aero did not work with it either.
- but these drivers aren't for mobility radeon
I have a radeon 9250 adapter in a AGP slot. running athlon duron 1.4ghz processor, 256 mgs ram on an ASUS A7N266-C mobo. My systems manager tells me I have 2 PCI Standard PCI-to-PCI Bridges. In order for the video adapter to work properly I've had to disable the bridge associated with the Network Adapter. I've moved the NIC several times with no results. What is causing this problem and how do I correct it. Windows 2000 Pro does not let me change resource settings for these devices.
Please Help.
Paulie
- I've got an older HP NC8000 laptop (1.7MHz P4-M 2GB RAM 7200 RPM Drive) with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB card that I've successfully configured to work with Windows Seven. At least so far so good. I had problems with the Omega and the 7.1 Catalyst drivers but eventually found a 9.1 ATI Catalyst driver for Vista on File Hippo. The driver is supposed to work on GPUs as far back as the Mobility Radeon 9500. Here is the link:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ati_catalyst_vista/
First, I booted in Safe Mode and disabled the device that was causing the conflict. Then, I rebooted in the "Low Resolution Mode (680 x 480)" and it booted cleanly. Then, I ran the Catalyst 9.1 executable to install the driver. When I rebooted, everything was looking great and offered me the full range of resolution settings that I wasn't getting using 7.1. Not sure this is the right answer, but hope it helps.- Proposed As Answer byMburg Thursday, February 05, 2009 11:15 AM
- This works for Windows 7 too! I have a Toshiba P30 and tried putting W7 on there to see how it would perform. It has the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600\9700 series card and after about 3hrs of trying different things I now have my resolution back. No aero though but that was expected.
