Answered Vista SDHC support - 4 GB now? For 8 gb, getting message "936825 does not apply"

I have an HP DV6000 laptop running Vista Home Premium with all recommended fixes, SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller, SD driver version 6.0.6000.16478 dated 6/21/2006.

The product documentation says the laptop supports SD cards (no mention of SDHC). I am using a 2 gig SD card for my automatic backups, but it isn't big enough. I need at least a 4 gb card.

If I were running XP, HP said I could install patch 934428 to support a 4 gb card, but they didn't know about Vista. Does Vista support 4 gb already?

KB936825 says it adds Vista support for 8+ gb, but when I try to install it, Windows says the fix does not apply to my system. Is it already installed?

Also, the Vista Backup/Restore function says it only backs up NTFS files, so I'm assuming my backup device also needs to be NTFS. This rules out the Kingston 8 gb SDHC card because it only appears to support FAT32. Maybe a 4 gb card is the best I can do. Backup/Restore won't use USB storage devices. I probably need to get a more robust Backup/Restore program, although I like using the SD card because it doesn't stick out - I don't have to remove it before sliding the laptop into the case.

Lastly on a related note, I'm not sure why when I tell Backup/Restore to backup Email it is backing up Outlook but not Windows Mail. I could migrate over to use Outlook for everything but so far I prefer to keep my Yahoo mail separate from my other email accounts and I already have two PSTs set up in Outlook.

    Hi,

Before moving on, I would like to explain that Windows Vista does support 4GB SD High Capacity (SDHC) cards.

Regarding the KB936825, if you installed Windows Vista SP1 and latest Windows Updates, the update should be installed.

I noticed you said: ”so I'm assuming my backup device also needs to be NTFS”. In fact, Windows Vista supports your backup device if it is formatted as NTFS, FAT, or Universal Disk Format (UDF) (also called Live File System). But please understand that the device cannot be a flash drive.

Regarding backup Windows Mail issue, I would like to explain that Backup and Restore does not support to back up Windows Mail. We should back up it by another way.

For your reference, I found a detail guide for you.

I also have the same issue as Robinson but I am running an Acer 9423 laptop.

I have Windows Vista SP1 installed with all of the lastest updates and have the SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller v6.0.6001.18000 but cannot read the 8GB SDHC card I have. I have tried to install the KB936825 but I get "The update does not apply to your system" message everytime. Please advise.

The error that you receive when you try to apply the update is MS's funny way of saying that you already have the update installed.

As for the SD card reader not reading an SDHC card:  generally, unless the documentation for the reader (read: your laptop's manual) specifically states that it does support SDHC, it doesn't.
The 'fix' would be to buy an SDHC-compatible reader, such as this one (others can be seen here.)

Sorry to give a different answer....
But I just own an ACER 9420 with Vista SP1 ( Italian language ) and not able to read SDHC  4 GB
When trying to update by patch, I obtain the "Funny" MS warning..... but... listen what's REALLY funny :

the reader is SDHC compliant. I know it because my Acer , when I boot it with Linux Ubuntu 8.10, correctly read SDHC!!!!!!!!

    ;-)

Still trying to understand how to fix this bug.
Just hope at least SP2 will be a real fix, and not a "funny" collection of gadgets....

I think this problem can be caused by SDHC card reader is not compatible with Vista system completely so that SDHC card can't be recognized by Windows Vista system. Please replace SDHC card reader to test problem:)
