AnswerInternet Explorer 7 Beta 3 - Cannot save initial setup page settings.

  • Friday, August 11, 2006 11:38 PMIowa63 Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

Just un-installed IE 7 Beta 2 and installed Beta 3. On start-up, IE 7 takes me to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=54834 , which in turn goes to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx

The IE set-up page will not save, giving just a generic error "Error applying settings!"

( The "Go to your home page now, and customize later. " & the " Go to your Home page now, and don't show this again" options also give the same error)

Its very annoying to have to go through the set up page everytime I fire up IE.

Is there anyway I can bypass the intial set page for IE or... better still can I get IE to save my settings?

    Thanks in advance.

    See if this works:

Create a new Restore Point before going into the Registry.

Go to >Run > type in regedit, click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER>scroll to Software>Microsoft>Internet Explorer> Main. You will see on the right side of the screen the subkey RunOnceHasShown. Click on the subkey and change the value from 0 to 1>close regedit and reboot your PC.

    Good luck!

Hi Brian........I'm glad your fix has worked for a few people, but unfortunately, I tried to follow your instructions, and everything was fine until it asked me to select the sub key "runonce......" as you describe.  I couldnt find the sub key on the right hand side of the screen....any other suggestions?

    I had the same problem

    My solution was:

    Browse to the same place:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Add a DWORD: "RunOnceComplete" with a value of 1

    Restart Internet Explorer

    Hope this helps,

    Dave

Here's the solution that just worked for me (final IE7, released and installed today):

You need the both DWORD's under HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main:

    RunOnceComplete = 1
    RunOnceHasShown = 1

Well if you don't see the runonce dword then create one by right clicking on Menu and choose New and DWORD. Make both runoncehasshown and runoncecomplete and change the Value Data to 1. Open the internet explorer properties and manually type in the url you wish to start. Close the window and restart the system. Everything will work fine!

     Proposed Answer

I have tried everything you all have stated.  I no longer get the RUNONCE page and get my home page....however, when I tried to add additional search providers, i get error on page no matter what search provider I pick.  Therefore, my guess, is I need to go through the setup screen to allow me to enter those.

Any help would be greatly appricated.

    Thanks

    Couldn't add search pages either.

Web site does not let you send e-mail to support people. Only phone.

Tried it and got tired of waiting.

I un-installed it and now I'm happy as a clam.

What an unreliable piece of software!!!

Guys, my problem was POP up blocker and Ad Blocker from Freedom Software....

So, this is what I had to do.

    1. Shut down my Anti-viurs/Pop block. Ad Blocker software

    2. Go into ADD ON's in IE

    3. Disabled any other ADD ON's that are still running related to pop up and ad blockers.

    4. Re-ran the RunOnce2.aspx...it worked.

    5. If I wanted to add SERACH items to the SEARCH dropdown in the upper right hand corner, i must disable all those too.  This solved my problem

No you might not have freedom Anti-virus, however, you might still want to check the Manage Add Ons in IE to get your problem fixed. MY browser is working just fine now.

    Thanks

I did not have this problem with IE7 RC. After installing the released version, I had the same problem as reported, where the home page wanted to go to the "runonce" location whenever I launched IE.

I just fixed this problem with the post by Alancsjr. I did not have the two subkeys listed in the right-side of the Registry. Once I added them with the exact names, and value of "1", this fixed the problem. With the Main folder highlighted, R-click > New > DWORD Value > enter the name. Open the subkey, and enter the value. Exit the registry, exit and launch IE again.  It should go to your configured home page.

alternatively a low tech solution is delete the ie shortcut on the desktop  then create a shortcut to your home page

Yes, my problem was caused by the Freedom Software popup blocker as well. The only browser extension I needed to disable was the "PopKill Class" extension by publisher "Zero-Knowledge Systems Inc." In spite of the fact that the Popup Blocker was disabled in the Freedom console, the extension still interfered with the RunOnce browser initialization as well as adding search providers. The other extension by the package, "ZKBho Class", does not seem to interfere with these features.

Since IE7 adds the Popup blocker on its own, I simply left this extension disabled and enabled the functionality within IE7.

    Thanks for all your help!

I have tried these tips and on the tips in the above posts and still no luck.

Everytime I go to add a DWord , it gives me an "Error renaming value" even though I just created the value.  Am I doing something wrong when I make a new value?  Now it maybe that I am using the final released version of IE7, but if so, how do I fix this problem?  I have re-installed IE7 twice now as well, still no luck.

I had IE7 before and liked it, but I reloaded my system (XP Pro SP2) and since then I have the same problem as many other users IE7 not saving my settings.

I know this thread is old, but any help would be appreciated.

Hey I am having this problem with a computer at a school that is on a student domain connected to a server. Logging on the computers with an administrator account it only asks to set the settings once but with a regular user, after restarting, first time opening Internet Explorer 7 it asks for the settings again. Now before it is opened the registry entries are missing. So after restart it must be deleting the entries. I changed the group policy for the computer and for the users to go straight to the home page (another workaround I found for this issue) but still for a regular user the settings are not saved and RunOnce is ran after restarting. These have the final release of IE7

USMC 0311 - The reason you cannot find it is that you need to create it. Follow below (the <Enter> is the keyboard key to select - don't type it):

    • Enter Registry Editor with regedit <Enter>
    • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\Main (make sure the 'Main' folder is highlighted and open)
    • At the 'Tool Bar', select to Edit>New>DWORD Value and left-click' once. The 'New Value #1' appears under 'Name' in the right column.
    • Change the name to RunOnceHasShown <Enter>. This name will replace it and appear highlighted.
    • 'Double-left-click' over the name and a window appears 'Edit DWORD Value'
    • Change the number in the 'Value data:' box to 1 then 'left-click' the 'OK'.
    • Repeat the above for another name RunOnceComplete.
    • Exit Registry Editor
    • Restart Internet Explore

    Hope this helps

Guys if you just start Internet explorer and you cant save just copy the url ie http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx or http://runonce.msn.com/runonce3.aspx and then run IE7 without any addons and paste the url into the address bar and your settings will now save
