DUAL BOOT Vista 64 ultimate & XP PRO 32
Good evening all,
Can anyone help me with the following:- I have my p/c loaded with vista 64 on partion 0 (drive C) which was working fine. I then decided to try and dual boot my system by installing XP Pro 32 on the same hard drive but in partition 1 (drive E). However when I reboot the system it only boots into XP, so although Vista is there I don't get a boot menu.
The last time I dual booted a system was sometime ago and the boot menu came up automatically but that is obviously not the case now. I have read some of the other posts regarding dual booting problems but I still don't understand fully. So my question is, can some one please advise me how to get a boot menu from XP (if possible as thats the system its currently booting into) so that I can access Vista as well.
Thanks..........

hello !!
first of all : insert your windows vista DVD in the drive and restart your computer, your bios must boot from vista DVD.. now try the fix boot option.. restart your computer and your windows vista will boot up..
after this you can try this:
You can run the commands in the following procedure by using the command prompt. If you run these commands in Windows Vista, run them at a command prompt that has elevated user rights. To do this, click Start, click Accessories, right-click the command-prompt shortcut, and then click Run as Administrator.
1. Use Bootsect.exe to restore the Windows Vista MBR and the boot code that transfers control to the Windows Boot Manager program. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt: Drive:\boot\ Bootsect.exe –NT60 All
In this command, Drive is the drive where the Windows Vista installation media is located.2. Use Bcdedit.exe to manually create an entry in the BCD Boot.ini file for the earlier version of the Windows operating system. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt.
Note In these commands, Drive is the drive where Windows Vista is installed.• Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –create {ntldr} –d “Description for earlier Windows version”
Note In this command, Description for earlier Windows version can be any text that you want. For example, Description for earlier Windows version can be "Windows XP” or “Windows Server 2003."• Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –set {ntldr} device partition=x:
Note In this command, x: is the drive letter for the active partition.• Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –set {ntldr} path \ntldr • Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –displayorder {ntldr} –addlast 3. Restart the computer.

Hi,
I went through this procedure to correct the same problem on my PC, and it all went well until I selected the new Windows XP option from the resulting boot menu, and I get the message that ntldr is either missing or corrupt, and I have to go back and boot to Vista again.
I can't find this file on my Windows XP installation, and there's no Boot.ini file either. Is there a way to restore these file to my Windows XP installation somehow? as I am sure this will get the system working.
Everything else went without a hitch, expect that the syntax for bcdedit has changed slightly now - you use '/' instead of '-' before options etc.
Thanks for your post, and hopefully you can solve my present hurdle!
Regards
hello!! its great that you dual booted successfully,
but for your error its quite simple....
NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM Not Found or Missing Error
which filesystem do you have? if you are unsure tehn its probably FAT32
If you have FAT32 partitions, then it is much simpler than with NTFS.
Just boot with a Win98 floppy
copy the NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM files
from the i386 directory to the root of the C:\ drive.
and you are done! (you can alos follow below directions)
For NTFS filesystem:
Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Select the Windows installation
Enter in the administrator password when requested
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\hope this solves your problem....
Hello Shantanu,

Thank you

hi! this method applies to Vista 64 too.. just you got insert vista 64 dvd in to the rom .. i did it on my vista 64 only..
and you mean seprate harddrives.. ? if yes then also the same procedure will take place just remember to partition your harddrive and give the partition letter in place// example : you have 2 HDD 1st is 80 GB and 2nd is 250 now you want to dual boot from Xp and Vista 64 ,, so you make partitions as C, D, E,F,G,H,I now you install Vista on C and then XP on any drive say H: so you just remember which drive is on which you installed XP and give the drive letter same in the procedure i wrote above,,,
ask if you have any queries..
cheers
shantanu
