AnswerRouter problem

There seems to be a problem with some routers. Today I installed vista rc1, build 5600, and encountered a problem with connecting to internet. It's not possible via the router. Yes it works directly via the adsl modem. I discovered a post about this same problem:

The culprit is the built-in firewall software on the DI-724U router, which features Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI). This is not the only router in the SOHO market that features SPI - Netgear's WGR614 and Linksys' WRT54GS are among dozens of products that offer similar capabilities. Trouble is, the new and improved TCP/IP stack in Windows Vista falls apart when it encounters an SPI-enabled router.

One workaround is to disable SPI on the router. That significantly weakens a key layer of network security, but it allows Internet traffic to get through. Unfortunately, the D-Link DI-724U, like several other products in the same family, doesn't allow SPI to be disabled

Well I disable the SPI of my WRT54g, but without any succes. To me this seems a serious problem. To have vista without internet.... Are there any solutions available.

Xavier, we need some more info from you on this issue:

    • Is SPI enabled by default on these routers or is this something you have enabled?
    • Can you send us a network capture?
    • Can you run network diagnose from network tray icon and see if that fixes the issue?

    Thanks.

I have also encountered this same problem with the WRT54G Linksys Router.  Bypassing the router lets windows connect fine.  However due to my location there are multiple people wishing to use the same connection and a router is the only option.  A funny thing that I encountered is that while connected to the router IMs work and when using IE or Firefox if you type in a IP address rather than the domain the page will load.

    Hi.

I have a serious problem with my router too and I manage to reproduce it a lot of times the last 2 days.

When my ISP drop the internet connection, Vista network services just crash.

    a) I cannot ping or open the admin pages on the router from the Vista, while the 2nd PC I have with XP can do it without problem.

    b) While the XP automaticaly connect to the intetnet few minutes after the drop (the router auto-reconnect), the Vista are still cut off from the ethernet and internet.

    c) I tried to Diagnose any network problems but Vista said that there isn't any. I tried to Disable the network connection but nothing happend. If i try to reboot the machine after I click Repair or Disable the system freeze (the longest time I left it like that was 5 hours just to test it) and I need to press the reset button on my case.

How I reproduce the problem? Very simple. If I unplug from the phone socket or the router the phone line "BOOM". The same problem happend.

Also the same occur then I turn off and on the router. Vista lose connection completely while XP aren't bothered at all.

I use an Edimax AR-7024-A ADSL Router.

    Hey,

I just installed Windows Vista RC1 as well today and I got the same problem. I am using a D-Link DI-604 router (non-wireless). I had to un-install it and install XP back again. What a freakin' mess.

It seems like a lot of work needs to be done on the network core components of Vista . . . So much for trying out this new OS -- cannot live without the Internet and the router so goodbye Vista until a fix for this is out.

    So that's too bad.

PS: Network Diagnose says that everything is fine and that I'm connected to the internet.

What is weird is that sometimes it will allow me to connect to certain websites: I could connect to www.nvidia.com, www.creative.com www.altavista.com, www.yahoo.ca. I was even able to download 1 file off Creative's website for my Audigy2 ZS soundcard. However, I could not get my nVidia video card driver download to start ... it would always time out.

Also, I could NOT connect to msn's website. I could connect to Microsoft's main website but whenever I'd click on a place to visit on the website, it would just time out. There is definately a problem with the network core with the usage of routers - that's a given.

I couldn't even connect to my router .....

Most router manufactureres have firmware updates that resolve that issue.  Try downloading and updating your D-ink:

    http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=62&sec=0#firmware

Vista is a beast, I recommend using for test purposes for now. The final release will be better.

Had the same problem initially with my D-Link DSL-604T.

In Vista you need to change your network adapter configuration.
    Set IPv4 Checksum, TCP Checksum Offload (IPv4 & IPv6) & UDP Checksum Offload (IPv4 & IPv6) all to DISABLED.

This should give you full internet, networking, access to router etc etc.

I've been running RC1 Build 5600 with these settings with absolutely zero problems.

Excellent!! I can now use a web browser and get my mail again. Thanks hamsta

I have a Linksys AG241 Gateway which evidently has SPI. I could not find any option to disable it. The last firmware update was the one I have from 17 Oct 2005.
Windows update worked and so did Live Messenger but no web-browser or email client.

When running "Diagnose" on the connection I got the response "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection"

I can't find any option to change the settings to disabled in the connection Properties box... All I can do is uninstall the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols, theres no option to 'disable' there... Where can you make the changes?

Underneath your network adapter is a "Configure" button.
Click on that and go to the "Advanced" tab.

    Hello all,

Thanks for the many answers. Apparently there seems to be problems with connecting to routers. Meanwhile I found the answer and it concerns the checksum settings. Rosalina cited the right answer. In regard to Linksys routers the full answer:

After some googleing I found the following information:
    1. A post from Ed Bott (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/index.php?p=10)

When I installed the latest Windows Vista release - the February Customer Technology Preview (CTP), build 5308 - I ran into an odd networking bug. After a little research, I discovered I'm not alone.
The symptoms are baffling. The network adapter installs correctly, and Vista can see all the other computers on the local network. Simple networking commands like nslookup, ping, and tracert show that DNS is working just fine and the system can reach external sites. But trying to open a web site in a browser results in a 404 message, and trying to access e-mail is equally troublesome.
I talked to a couple other testers who were experiencing similar problems, and none of us had a solution. A little extra digging revealed that my Windows Vista installation using the December CTP code (build 5270) was displaying the same symptoms after working fairly well a month ago. What changed since then? Two weeks ago, I installed a brand-new D-Link DI-724U router and have since encountered no problems at all on my Windows XP/2003 network. On a hunch, I called a technical contact at D-Link, who confirmed that the router is indeed part of the problem. According to this source, a known bug in recent builds of Windows Vista affects a slew of recent-vintage routers.
Unfortunately, the D-Link DI-724U, like several other products in the same family, doesn't allow SPI to be disabled.
For now, I've replaced the router with a five-year-old Linksys BEFSR81, which handles basic networking just fine. I've also ordered a new DGL-4300 gigabit gaming router, which should arrive today or Monday. My D-Link contacts say this one includes the option to disable SPI, and thus will work just fine with Windows Vista.
Finding and fixing bugs like this one is the whole point of a beta test program. Given the popularity of firewall-equipped routers, this bug needs to be completely squashed before Windows Vista Beta 2 goes out to the general public.

So I disabled my SPI on my Linksys WRT54G router. Well not wholehearted offcourse, but just to test.  But with no result. Still could not see urls. And vista without internet is very….

Then after some further googleing I found another post:

    2. Found the answer (http://www.vistaforums.com/forum/Topic2166-9-1.aspx)

"ok I found the solution: The NIC Driver for Networc Cards with Mavell Yukon
Chipset seems to have a Problem...solution:
Go to Local Area Properties Setting -> Configure -> Advanced -> Change "IPv4
    Checksum Offload" to DISABLED
then the sites are accessible !
    cheers felix
    The other site = http://www.tutorialsall.com/IE/Problems-accessing-43674/

So I went looking for these settings and changed them. First open the settings of the network card.  Go to advanced and check IPv4. In my version this already was disabled. So what else??? I changed all other “checksum” entries for ipv4 and ipv6. And indeed it works! All pages are directly visible. Moreover I renabled the SPI firewall on the router console and it still works. The impact of disableing the checksum is not significant.

If I'm right the checksum settings are for performance only. Maybe someone can tell me more about these settings.

An observatin that is possibly related .

Since RC1, I have not been able to reliably establish network connectivity through my Uli LAN ethernet adapter to the Actiontec GT704WG gateway it is connected to.   By repeatedly stopping / restarting LAN adapter or similar gymnastics, I can usually establish a connection eventually.  Same hardware works fine when I boot to XP x64.

I connected an ethernet packet sniffer during problematic outbound transaction attempts  (IPtools doesn't need WinPcap and works with Raw IP data on Vista).   I found that the ipv4 checksum fields from my PC are not valid - they are always 0000.

ipv4 checksums from same equipment running under XP x64 with same Uli LAN driver are correct, and connectivity is established normally.

I beleive the 'checksum offload' feature allows the lower layers of the UDP/IP or TCP/IP stack to releive the higher layers of this task.   i.e. the driver inserts the checksum (which is equal to the sum of the bytes in the other fields and used to validate the data)  rather than Windows having to do it.

Unfortunately, my LAN driver doesn't provide any means of controlling the checksum settings (at least none that I've found)

    regards

Had This Problem also with a D-Link DI-604.I did was mentioned to disable the checksum in IPv4,IPv6 & UDP.That also enabled me to to see my router to pull up the web site to change the settings in my router.I went into the DHCP setting in the router and changed the Starting IP Address to 192.168.0.20.Went back and enabled IPv4,IPv6 & UDP and works fine now with the router hidden again.

    Running Windows Vista RC1 5600

    Hey guys,

It seems that I have problems like the ones your writing about. I discovered the problem when I wanted to connect my xbox360 to watch a recorded show. I was not able to connect at all. The pc didnt wake up as it normally would in XP so I looked at the pc and noticed that I had limited connection to the router and no connection to the internet. When I try and repair nothing happens until I go for a reset of the netcard.

This is on a HP Pavilion Media Center with an Intel lan card. My WLAN router is one of the old Ipaq so I am not sure it it has the SPI? enabled and if it is possible to disable it.

Should I be able to fix the problem by disabling the IP4 and 6 as described earlier??

    Thanks

    Paqi

I have a WRT54G linksys router. I have recently upgraded to vista to a pc that was already connected to the router. It worked for several days until i decided to reinstall it to change the security settings (stupid me) I wanted to secure my wireless connection. I ran the set up and to my suprise the router couldnt connect anymore. It constantly told me to reset the settings which i have done multiple times. I guess the above is the solution. but im not a computer expert so can you please provide a step by step tutorial on how to disable 'Checksum offload'?

I can't find it either and when I got to configure and then to the advanced tab, there is only some list that says flow control...interrupt moderation....network address....priority VLAN....speed and duplex settings

so basically I'm  totally lost as to how to change those settings, and at a time when I'm the unhappy owner of a d-link router and windows vista....so frustrating

and the internet works on my main computer but its off and on for my wirelessly connected laptop....
