taskeng.exe using 90+% resources
Something very odd going on.
Turned on the PC this morning, had a very jumpy mouse that kept sticking all over the screen, hard drive furiously whirring away in the back ground.
"Beta, meh" I said as I rebooted.
Mouse still sticky and hard driver still whirring upon reboot however.
Go into task mgr, clicked on show processes from all users, and see taskeng.exe using 90%+ of my resources. I have no clue what Is going on, however, the only update as of late has been the new NVidia drivers.... could they be causing it?
build 5384
p4 1.6
512 RDRam
NVidia GForce FX5200

Taskeng.exe is Windows Task Agent
aka Windows scheduler
Goto The Run Menu (Shortcut - Windows Logo + R)
type in: services.msc
Look For : Task Scheduler
Open it up and change from automatic to Disabled
Also make sure:
Run Menu
Type: msconfig
under services tab
Look for and uncheck Task Scheduler
Reboot, and no more taskeng.exe to lag up computer
No one uses windows scheduler anyhow lol
Enjoy!

Interesting that no one else here seems to be getting this bug....
submitted to Microsoft via the tool, but thats sooo.. unfullfilling in that there is no dialogue of it being received, let alone considered for action.
- Hi, i just installed vista, and i have the same graphics card as you as well, and i am getting taskeng.exe eating up 90+ resources as well... i wounder if it is nvidia related or not but i am having the same symptoms as you stated with the hdd going out of control and so on, i just end its process at startup though, im trying to figure out if i can stop it from starting up when the computer starts up at the moment, if i learn more ill let you know

-Agent Rob Awesome! Thanks for your reply and tip.
I did the first step, disabled it, but msconfig comes up as not found lol. (go figure eh?) anyways, I will reboot in a bit and see if the first step alone will perm disable this pain in the a$$.
Thank you again!
Indeed, the first step alone has worked without the necessity of taking the second step as outlined.
Good work and again, much thanks for this very handy, usefull and appreciatted tip!
- hey, i'm a noob here. I attempted to do the first step.. after i reach the Task scheduler properties it won't let me change anything. So i can't change the start-up from Automatic. So i tried to second step using msconfig, and it obviously doesn't work either. (i guess since it's in automatic it won't let me disable it until i change the Automatic setting).
What should i do? - Interesting that you are having this issue as it should have been fixed in all Vista copies subsequent to Beta 2. what version are you on?

Hi Lee
I have the same problem as Cyrus25. I'm running Vista Home Premium.
I stopped the firewall from allowing taskeng.exe when I saw that it was disabled in msconfig services, which reminds me... services.exe tried to also sneak past me. I used Killprocess to crush it and then deleted it with malicious intent... hehe :-)Hi, I am new too. I am having the same problem. I was trying to change it from Automatic to Disabled, but it will not let me. It is all grayed out. How can I do this. I do not need it hogging up my CPU!
Thanks,
Sewsewbizzee
i was not able to do it
it keeps restarting
it's persistent
please help
I have attempted to follow your instructiuons and have no problem find the services per your directions but I am unable to disable the scheduler. I beleive this is a service automatically started and even if I uncheck the item in the System Config screen and the services tab the system will not hold the change and is automatically set back to run.
Any Hints?
I upgraded from Windows Vista Business 64 to Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and now I'm having the same problem. I was working for two hours on my pc and when I opened the task manager I had 100 taskeng.exe processes running.
