QuestionInternet (DNS) Connectivity suddenly not working Vista RTM Stop Watching Topic

I'm having a problem where I can ping addresses via ping www.google.com and get replies.. but attempts to connect to them in IE7 or even things like outlook or messenger are not connecting.

This happened out of the blue.. everything was working fine with my Vista www.google.com and get replies.. but attempts to connect to them in IE7 or even things like outlook or messenger are not connecting.

This happened out of the blue.. everything was working fine with my Vista x64 RTM build then bang.. internet issues.

I've tried diagnosing the issue, unchecking ipv6, looking on the net for solutions but nothing so far.  My ip settings are manually configured and things work fine on my other XP machine.

    Anyone run into this?

Vista ships with IP6 turned on, with features like "network awareness" that UDP floods a network
You can google the net for various fixes, here is what I have done to get limited connectivity to my IP4 network

    Go to your NIC Properties
    Turn off
    QoS
    IP6
    Network Location
    Network Link-Layer Discovery Mapper
    Network Link-Layer Responder

If you are behind a Gateway device such as a SOHO router
    Disable its Stateful Packet Inspection
    or
Place your Vista device in a DMZ (if router allows it)

I have exactly same problem (VISTA RTM). This is a bug in "Internet Connection Sharing".

My main connection is shared. I have 2nd connection via wlan to access internet from my second PC (ad-hoc). I'm using P2P software on my main PC. Suddenly main PC loses ability to access any website (IE/FF/whatever). BUT all existing connections are Ok (WLM, Skype).

I found what stopping "Internet Connection Sharing" service helps to return browsing ability back to live. But sometimes I have to reboot system to restore network connectivity.

There are no any messages in EventLog. Only "Event 4226" (stupid TCP half-open connections limitation) in completely different time.

Disabling IPv6 (in network properties and registry) doesn't helps at all.

Hardware doesn't matter too. I have same problem on different hardware. This problem also reported by many users.

Ok, MS... If you are pretending what problem doesn't exists ("politics of ostrich"?) then try this scenario:

    1. Install Vista RTM.
    2. Setup main network connection with static IP accessible from outside
    3. Setup secondary wireless connection
    4. Share main connection
    5. Setup ad-hoc network and connect second PC to main using ad-hoc connection
    6. Install P2P client eMule Plus
    7. Start several downloads in eMule (oh, please! don't ask me how to do this!)
    8. Wait 2-8 hours
    9. Try to open any website in IE on MAIN PC. If successful then wait more.
    10. If connection was failed then stop bloody "Internet Connection Sharing" service.
    11. If connection still failed then reboot main PC

And... BLOODY HELL! How about to stop ignoring this problem and respond! This bug in ICS is annoying! And you will face it sooner or later.

    Are you using Vista x64?

Was the connection working and then it stopped?

If you are using Vista x64, can you log on using the 64 bit version of IE 7?

    Here is what has happened.

You have blown out you 32 bit layer interface in Vista.

Any program that runs at 32 bit will not work properly.

Hence IE 7 standard will not work;but the 64 bit version will.

You can verify this by finding and downloading the 64 bit version of firefox. Its in beta but is available. you need to do a google search. All this will do is confirm whats going on.  Anything that runs at 32 bit will not be able to access the network. Virus definitons cannot update, Any program that checks the internet for updates will not work.

Now the serious part. The only way I know of fixing this short of reinstalling Vista is go back to a restore point that was created and is available still. This restore point has to be prior to the problem occuring. If it is; run a system restore. My problem was I; went 1 week before trying a system restore ;so it would not work. Short of that a complete reinstall is required which is what I had to do.

Good Luck we are all counting on you.

    Jim

See if you can do a system restore from boot up with the Vista disk.

If not see if it will allow you to upgrade you current install. it would not work for me.

I got a feeling some services loaded into memory got corrupted.  Sorry.

PS I  now due a system restore every 3 days.

I'm having a VERY similar problem with Vista x86 but I can circumvent by disabling Windows OneCare's firewall.  When diagnosing the issue it reports that there is a policy issue with the Microsoft Firewall, but I cannot find any way to change this.  Enabling the built-in Windows Firewall works fine, but the OneCare firewall exhibits very similiar behavior although I cannot resolve anything outside of the local network.  My network connection goes from "Local and Internet" to Local only.

    I have the same problem.

I have dual boot with XP and VISTA RTM.

My XP internet works fine, and my VISTA internet stoppped working without advanced notice.

The funny thing is that Skype works fine in VISTA. It's able to make calls and all, but I can't browse with IE7 or Firefox. I can't ping anything, and I haven't check email, but my guess is that it won't work.

If I try to diagnose the problem with the IE built in troubleshooter, it says something about not being able to get an answer from DNS server when trying to microsoft.com

I will try to stop the ICS service as adviced by one of you.

There is a beta 64 bit version of Firefox. Find with a google search.

Try it, and if it works , your 32 bit sub-system is hosed.

You will have to reinstall or restore Vista from a backup.

If you disable the firewall does it work?  If you're using a firewall, which one are you using - the built-in Windows Firewall or the firewall the comes with Live OneCare?
  • Monday, January 29, 2007 3:08 PMjbm007 Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

Live One care does not work with Vista x64 OS  Fire wall is the built in version.

Disabling fire wall does not work.

Brad many other programs that don't rely on the internet stop functioning properly as well. It definetly is being caused by the 32 bit subsytem in Vista x64. The program will open and run but when you go to close it; a error window shows up indicating program has failed to respond.

Thanks for clarifying, in this case we have two different problems that have similar symptoms.  I am using Vista Ultimate x86 so, as far as I know, the problem should not lie in this direction for me.

Have you been able to rectify the problem without a complete reinstall?

  • Monday, January 29, 2007 7:04 PMignomo Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

I'm using live one care and disabling it doesn't fix it.

I didn't mention that I'm using a router, and that connecting straight to the cable modem fixes the problem.

Everything was fine a few days ago...

That's an important point, I'm also connecting through a router as well, but have not tried to connect directly to the cable modem.  I have a feeling that the firewall policy from Microsoft was updated recently which broke certain configurations.

What is the subnet that you're router is working on?  I'm using 192.168.0.0/24 - I'm wondering if the firewall policy somehow is not recognizing this as a valid network any longer.

got the same problem. But mine - theres no WAN access at all- I can browse to the modem - with my static IP, 192.168.1.5 and the modem being 192.168.1.2 - but the DNS for the Service Provider cannot be reached. If I leave everything on DHCP - it only worked for my XP but not for the Vista RC2. I have disabled the Vista firewall, checked firewall policy - and set to allow - same thing. I have looked all over the net - tried to install MS patches and it said - "update does not apply to your system". Makes me wonder

So you're configuring a static IP in the Vista client and manually specifying the DNS address of your ISP as well?  If you open a command prompt and type "nslookup" does it return a DNS server prompt?

I moved back to windows xp because of this problem. I think they should really fix this issue before service pack 1 for vista. Anyways to get around it you have to turn your routers firewall off, which to may is a security risk for other clients on the same network. So my end solution was to go back to windows xp.

Same problem here. Internet connection on anything 32 bit is lost and crashes but on anything x64 works fine! The only problem I had before this was install shield trying to do an update and then crashed. All down hill from there. Desperate for a solution or will have to go back to XP...

I had a connection problem with vista (always lost connection after playing this game over the internet and having to reboot to fix it 'cause nothing else I know of worked).
A change of network interface card / ethernet solved this problem for me.

This happens to me;  about every 2 weeks. A new driver., an update of some kind., accessing the internet.,what ever.

The only recourse some has is to use system restore. That is the only thing that has saved me a reinstall. Going back 1 - 2 weeks back.

Hey Microsoft !!!!!!!     fix this problem. Too may people are having the same issues. It happens too often for it to be a chance problem.

Want help Microsoft? let me know I will send you logs.  Its a  DHCP interface problem with your 32 bit software interface layer. It keeps getting corrupted. I have plenty of event services errors. Anyone at Microsoft listening????? Maybe if we took this to a public blog; it would get someones attention.

I have Vista Home Premium, 32 bit, with a Linksys router and have connection issues as well. I stay connected for a while then when I go to use the Windows Updat, or Problem reports, it says theres no connection. If I disable the network card then enable and go right to Problem reports, it works. Yet once I go do something else, and try to check for Windows Updates, the same dang issue all over again. It's like Vista's having issues remembering your connected via Lan, but will work for some apps but not others. It happens with Problem Reports, Windows Updates, IE 7, and just about every "Windows" application only. No problems when using AIM or Messenger or other 3rd party software.

I had the same problem. I encountered it before on suse 9.3. I have a adsl router in my company which is a dhcp and a dns server. So it asigns its ip as a dns server. And that doesn't work. Dunno why. But when I manually put the dns servers of my isp in the tcp/ip properties, it works. I suppose my router is not forwarding dns requests correctly, allthough the thing works fine with auto settings in windows XP. I hope this helps.

I've downloaded and installed a newer driver for my NIC, and it seems to work fine with no issues, as far as connection goes. But after about 15 minutes or so, I have a system crash, yes folks, I get the almighty "BLUE SCREEN of Death!" Didn't think it was going to be possible, but sure as heck, it's still present in this OS.

Anyways, it seems that there's a conflict somewhere between installing the newer updated drive for my NIC and the installed driver for my Video card, which is an ATI 9800 Pro AIW. I am using the latest "Windows Vista" approved drivers for the ATI, and never see any issues with the default NIC driver Vista uses. But no matter what I do, if I install the updated driver for the NIC, up cometh the Blue Screen!

Really odd situation here and can't think of any kind of work around as there shouldn't be any kind of conflict between a Video and NIC driver. When I get the Blue Screen I get a message from Windows Troubleshooter that to fix the problem with the video is to install the newest drivers (which is already installed) or change the Video cards acceleration, which is impossible as it is greyed out in the Video Advanced settings. So there's no way to make any change or apply the fix provided. I have tried going to just the default driver Vista wants to install, the first, second and 3rd driver updated provided by ATI, and no matter what I install video driver wise, it crashes with the newer NIC driver installed.

So I can suffer with the annoying "Work Offline / try again" messages, disable and restart my NIC constantly, or go with the "Blue Screen of Death" and system Dumps. Hmmm... decisions, decisions.... this ones a tuffy......

I went and changed my DNS entries on the NIC to my ISP's to see if that will make any difference as suggested and keep my toes crossed. Arthritis won't allow me to cross my fingers so I'm screwed there too!  Smile

Aint life just WONDERFUL folks! Hahahahahah......

I'm ready for the Next suggestion!

I can report that disabling Internet Connection Sharing seems to have fixed this problem for me. I'm going to try this for a day or so and see if it maintains.

The moment I stopped the service, web pages began to work again even after the problem surfaced. So hopefully, this is the easy fix.

The issues most people have been experiencing have been related to virus software, especially after getting updates.

The other situation I have seen is after a fairly major windows update it takes the OS several reboot to wake up the network connections. I don't know if this could be due Ip renewals  or DNS resetting.

Disable your antiv irus software reboot and see if you can restore your connection. I have switched to NOD 32 and have had no connection issues since. I have also used Avast with no problems.
