Hi, Vista Business is very slow to open and close *some* files. Sometimes its fast, sometimes its slow, all the files are in redirected folders push out by the domain group policy on the Windows 2003 R2 enterprise server.

Below is a dump from netmon from the Vista box when closing a document, from hitting the x cross it takes upto 1 minute to close word:

Any reason for this? I cant use Vista for my other users because they will complain like mad with delays like this.

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Hi, issuing the following commands:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

Along with the smb tweaks as pushed out via group policy seems to have improved the opening speed of the files under Vista. I am still monitoring this and if stable for a while longer i will consider this issue to be fixed. The adm template can be seen below for the registry tweaks:

I am concerned however as to why these tweaks had to be made (netsh and registry changes) should it not be fast by default out of the box?

    Many thanks,

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for the post. I understand that the Documents folder is redirected to a share folder on a Windows 2003 R2 enterprise server by using Group Policy. However, you find that sometimes it will take a long time to open and close the files located in Documents folder.

Regarding the issue, please check the following points:

    1.    Does the issue occur if you open and close a .txt file?

    2.    Does the issue occur in other operating system such as Windows XP?

Please perform the following actions to check the result:

    1.    Turn off Auto Tuning on the Windows Vista machine:
    -----------------------------------------

    a. Click Start, and type cmd in the Start Search box.
    b. Right-click the cmd icon, and select
    Run as Administrator.
    c. In the Command Prompt, type the following command:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

    d. After that, please check the result.

Note: Please re-enable Auto Tuning by typing the following command if the above steps cannot fix the issue:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

    2.    Install the updates KB938194 and KB938979 on the Windows Vista machine.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979

    Hope it helps.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I do not know if it happens to text files, but it does happen to word documents. I will check this at the first opportunity and let you know the result. The delay doesnt happen 100% of the time, mostly 80% when there are long delays (20 second to 1 minute) when closing. Sometimes there is a delay when opening, sometimes a delay when closing, sometimes it is instant. This is all with the same file. Some other documents open instantly most of the time.

This issue does not happen on XP Professional (however please see below as i have had other issues and they may be related). We have Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise acting as domain controller and it is the location for the redirected folders. All machines (server, client XP Pro and client Vista business) are all on the same network switch (which is a basic 3com switch with no QOS or any other functionality).

I have checked the permissions on the user home directories for the redirected folders and they are as per the default created directories with the user/owner having full permissions on the share.

I will try the hotfixes you suggested, in the meantime i would like to bring to your attention I have other issues with Windows XP where My Documents took a long time to open as per posts in other forums, i will repeat them below:

"Hi, i have pushed Offline files and redirected folders via group policy for our domain. It does work with files (My documents) being
redirected to the network and offline files allowing the users to work away from the network.

However, some users are complaining My Documents is slow to open (first time in the morning and at various points throughout the day), i.e. they double click on My documents and it will sit there for around 20 seconds, and in some cases upto 2 minutes, before My Documents open. Opening any network share during this time is no problem (mapped drive in my computer) and that is fast as expected. The only delay is with the redirected my documents.

Another issue i have is that i get frequent disconnects for offline files, the baloon tip pops up "connection lost to svr001 - You are now Working Offline". i can click to synchronise and it goes straight back up no problem. I know the link is still ok as i can ping the server and infact it is my dns server and i can browse the internet fine.

We are running Windows XP SP2, and Windows 2003 R2 with all updates and latest service pack. The box is running as domain controller, and location for the offline files/redirected folders.

I have followed  "netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED", then install the following hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936594 on the Windows 2003 Server... it didnt have any effect or different to the delays.

A dump from netmon from a client XP Professional machine which explorer is hanging for 30+ seconds when opening my documents can be seen below:

I made the following changes via group policy http://blogs.sepago.de/helge/2007/11/07/soup-up-your-terminal-server-optimizing-explorers-network-performance/ which bascially disable the following:

    Key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRxSmb\Parameters
    Value: InfoCacheLevel
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Data: 10 (hex)

    Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    Value: NoRemoteRecursiveEvents
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Data: 1

    Key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
    Value: SafeDllSearchMode
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Data: 1

    "

These changes seemed to have fixed the issues in XP and My Documents seem to open faster. My question is however should this not all work out of the box without me having to make any registry changes? I have really been struggeling with Redirected and offline folders with this setup for other 2 months it hasnt work as i expected.

Thanks so much for the reply, hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

    Chris

     Answer

    Hi, issuing the following commands:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

Along with the smb tweaks as pushed out via group policy seems to have improved the opening speed of the files under Vista. I am still monitoring this and if stable for a while longer i will consider this issue to be fixed. The adm template can be seen below for the registry tweaks:

I am concerned however as to why these tweaks had to be made (netsh and registry changes) should it not be fast by default out of the box?

    Many thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

I understand the problematic computer is running Windows Vista. I provided the link for our Windows XP Newsgroup because I noticed that you have questions about Windows XP in the third post. Please ignore it if there is anything I misunderstood.

    Have a nice day.

    Hi Joson,

I am facing the same problem as Chris for my Windows Vista Home Edition. This programme is installed in a Toshiba machine.

When I am trying to save file under all the MS Office application, (I always click "save as"), the system always seems to "hang" for about 30 sec before they allow me to select which folder I wan to save my file. This had caused alot of nuisance especially when i had chosen the folder and double click on it, the system hang for another 30 sec before i can go into the folder.

Please kindly advise what could be the possible reason for this, and how i can resolve this issue?

    Thanks alot

    Hi Jaslyn,

My problem turned out to be redirecting folders to a share on the one and only domain controller. Apparently DCs have different network file timeouts and is not recommended to use as file share.

I now use Windows 2008, and have virual machines under hyper-v one of which is a dc and other a file server vm. Speed is excellent (upto 500Mbit/sec) and no more hanging.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Chris

Has anyone found a resolution to this?  Having a similar issue but intermittently can't save to the desktop.  A restart resolves it.  The PC's are Vista Business with SP2.  The server is a 2008 SBS Box, so its a DC, File Server and Exchange currently.  I searched and haven't found anything on "Redirected Folders Can't Save to Desktop" or similar wording.  Will be looking at event logs next time it happens but would like to see if anyone found a resolution to the slow save issue listed here - I think its related since we get the  the Vista circle meaning wait (like the XP hour/minute glass) when trying to save often.

Has anyone found a resolution to this?  We too are having similar issues.  New managed switches, no operating QOS, new servers, new NICs, the only thing that is old is the cabling which has been tested.  With Wireshark, we see "Create Andx Resposne, FID: 0x000, Error: Status_Object_Name_Not_Found" a lot.

I have the similar problems with this configuration:

A pristine install of SBS 2008 Premium as DC, Exchange, file server with 8 gigs,. more than adequate cpu, running 2 x 500g drives on Intel matrix raid1 controller.

Only two users on the system both running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Issue is opening, saving Office files....system stalls anywhere from 15 seconds to 60+ seconds.   Windows 7 reports that at app is "not responding" but the app eventually does.

I had this issue on a HP Desktop. After uninstalling McAfee Internet Security and it fixed the problem completely. After installed Symantec Suite the issue did not reappear.
