We run a Windows 2003 domain with a server acting as the print server. Everytime i try to add a printer the print spooler on the Vista test PC just stops.

I can restart it but everytime I try to add a printer it stops again.

    Any ideas

Check for the HP driver file hpbmini.dll on the server.  If the HP printer you are connecting to uses this file, the version number needs to be .16 or greater.  HP checks the operating system version with this file and it does not understand version 6 and crashes the spooler on Vista.

You can pickup version .18 with one of these drivers.  Just install one of these drivers on the server and you will get the new hpbmini file.

the LaserJet 4345 MFP (Version 60.053.762.32) and Color LaserJet 9500 MFP (version 60.52.267.21) are drivers having the latest hpbmini.dll in their package on hp.com.

And Color LaserJet 3000/3800 (PCL5, PCL6, PS) will be on hp.com next week. And Color LaserJet 3600 (Host based) will be on hp.com next week. The drivers’ version is 60.52.269.042.

I've got the same problem, this is happening with all of the HP printers on the network, but I managed to add a SharpMX2300. I am thinking that there is a compatablility issue with HP printer, which would be odd as they dominate the printer industry - kinda.

    Teenz,

I work for a copier dealer and I just installed about 12 Sharp MX Series 2700 - 5500 printers on a customers network (server 2003). I witnessed the same problem today. Did you get this problem resolved? They also have HP Printers on their network but since we have the Sharp MX series in common I was worndering what you have done. I downloaded the latest drivers from Sharps Technician Support site but have not tried them and wont get a chance to until next week.

I've had the same problem connecting Vista Business to a Win2K3 SBS Premium box, printing to an HP LJ 4100n. I suspected a print driver as the problem so I uninstalled the HP from the server and installed it with their newest driver, but I still have the problem - the print spooler service on the Vista machine stops after a single sucessful print job. I can restart the service and get it to print one more time, but then the spooler service stops.

My workaround was to get rid of the server printer on the Vista machines and just print directly to the printer using the driver that comes with Vista and the issue has gone away. I'll take a look at the .dll you mentioned and give that a try.

I too had the same problem and this is how I solved it. Hp's solution is that the XP driver will work. If this is true it didn't work for me. I also tried downloading the Vista driver and installing it on my 2003 server which caused other issues I had to deal with. After using the wizard on my local computer and installing the driver that is built into Vista my problem went away. I've done this on several network printer installs and it has stopped my spooler problem.

Alan, Vista Business appears to share same problem/challenge with HP2600n. This series printer appears not use hpbmini.dll in its driver build. HP proposes a firmware upgrade for its HP2600n printer, yet unable to reach printer due to 0x000006be error - cannot appear to get past this. Are you aware of any workaround? Many thanks.

If you tried to connect to a print queue that contained that corrupt driver, your vista computer would display an error because the print spooler had crashed.  Consequently, if you tried to reconnect to the printer, or ANY other printer, it would display the same error (because the print spooler stopped the first time you tried).

If you restarted the print spooler (manually as admin, or automatically during a reboot), and tried to connect to the same printer, it would crash again.

As you can imagine, it was quite difficult to pinpoint what was causing the problem because it seemed to be random, but after I spotted the pattern, it was easy to avoid the situation, and even to develop a work-around.

If you connected to a printer that has a good version of the DLL, it would copy that good version of the DLL to your computer, and you would NEVER have the problem, regardless of what printer you connected to.

So make sure everybody get’s the ‘good’ version of the DLL file.  Look online for a pcl driver.

You must restart your computer to get the print spooler to restart, or restart it manually with admin rights before you connect to the queues listed below.

I had the same probs to start

So I just connected the Printer Via USB to do the firmware upgrade, worked a treat, did not solve the spooler issue though still working on that one via the DLL trail

This is for a HP Color Laser jet 2600n

This is the procedure that I followed and it seems to work I have now done it twice with a reboot in between
I downloaded the full English Package from the HP Website & unziped it to default location on the C: Drive
I then cleared all the Useless ports that had accrued on the previous installs eg 192.168.1.72_1  and 192.168.1.72_2 and so on,I originally had 9

Do this by opening up another printers properties and viewing ports and deleting all ports for the printer you wish to install
    In my case 192.168.1.72

I then restarted my machine to clean things up, this may not have been needed.

I then went to control panel / Printers / chose add a new printer / chose add a network printer / even though the printer was seen / I chose "the printer that I want  isn't listed" / I then chose the option to add a printer using a TCP/IP address and entered my address ie 192.168.1.72 and took the tick from the box to automatically select driver to use
    Chose Next
Install printer driver page pops up / choose have disk / next
Browse to where the HP download was unzipped and locate the autorun.inf file / choose open and for me it was a flawless install /I got the option to print a test page /perfect

Rebooted and test again / perfect

    Hope that helps

We're having the same issue with Dell printers connected through a network.  We tried the resolution recommended at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324757, and it worked up until we tried installing the printer again.  It's very frustrating.  Our other laptop won't print in landscape with any program in Office 2007, but that's another issue...

This sound like the problem some people here are seeing

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946394/en-us

Error message when you try to connect to a print queue in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008: "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000006be)"

I had exactly the same problem after upgrading from XP to Vista, i resolved my issue by deleting the following string in the reg,

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections] in the connections you may see that there is a reference to your domain, delete the subkey not the top

Please do not delete the full key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections] only the sub keys below this.

    Regards

    Ok John,

You seem to know more than anyone else I have spoken with. I have 2 Lexmark printers that won't work because the printer spooler and it's dependencies are off. I have tried to turn them on, even put them on automatic, and they will not come on. I have used the driver wizard, followed all the many directions from microsoft and gateway and nothing has worked. I don't think buying a new printer would even help. I have found all dependecies except for the HTTP, I don't know where or what that is. I have been working on this for over a month. Any help you or anyone you know will be greatly appreciated. At this point, I think the dependencies may be more of the problem than the spooler. Gateway and Microsoft send me long printouts on what to do, but I CAN'T PRINT THEM. I think I have managed to follow all directions. Since I'm still under warranty it seems they could just call my computer and fix it. If all tech have to do is email a copy of their many "how to fix pages", I want to be a tech.

Thanks---I didn't mean to get nasty about the techs, I'm just really fed up after dealing with this for almost 2 months.
