QuestionXP Pro Upgrade to Vista RC1 - Windows Sharepoint Services Error

Is anyone else having problems with the RC1 refusing to upgrade to to it saying WSS is there?

The compatibility checker didnt find anything, yet when I go to do an upgrade I am told Windows Sharepoint Services needs to be uninstalled.

I havent got IIS installed. I have never had a previous version of Vista on this machine. I do have the Technical Refresh of Office 2007 as required.

    Clues anyone.

In meantime I am trawling through my machine looking to clean things out.

    Eddie,

I get the same error, have removed IIS and cannot find "SMIGRATE.EXE” which was suggested might be the culprit.  Have never had Vista on this machine.  Have been searching Net and quite a few people have complained of the same problem at http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=1396 but no one has a fix as yet.  Very confusing and wasting a lot of time.

After banging my head on this for hours, I finally figured it out. I don't remember the exact name of the folder (since I already deleted it and was all excited that my install had finally begun) but do a search on your computer for any file beginning with the letters 'sts'. The extensions don't matter. In my case, I found the file in a folder which was under the 'Program Files' folder. I also found a 'setupsts.exe' file in that same folder. Essentially, that folder contained the install for 'Windows SharePoint Services 2.0' and the Vista installer, seeing that, thought you had the program installed.

A short-cut, if you will, would be to look for a folder beginning with the letters 'sts' directly under 'C:\Program Files' or where ever your program files directly lies. Then delete the folder beginning with 'sts' and it should fix your problem. It did for me any way.

Thank you DarkRider. I have been banging my head as well, but could not find a solution. Your solution works. And this is not a Beta-version of Vista. Furthermore, an employee from Microsofts technical personel has not given me any solutions yet. I am just left wondering why SharePoint Sevices stores itself on the harddisk and makes many registry entries, when it never maneged to install.

no help -- same problem and removing the sts folder doesn't seem to help. I'm assuming the installer checks the registry. any clues as to what it's finding in the registry that makes it assume that sharepoint is installed?
