Unable to install - error code 80070002
I installed all the updates prior to trying to install SP1. I tried using both Windows update and the standalone installer, but both give this error early on.
Anyone run into this error installing SP1?
Answers
- Same error here at the end of installation progress bar, on a Dell Vista Business x86 italian, run as Administrator: "Service Pack Internal Error..."
All WU updates are installed but no previous SP1. All running progs was stopped and UAC too.
Tried to stop WUAU service and delete %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder with no results - I receive the same error.
After I've fixed Errorcode "x80092004" by mself I've now trouble with error 80070002 after 3/4th of the installation.
Unfortunately everything I tried to fix the problem didn't help. I posted up about this error last week and no one has any response except for they themselves having the error too. Glad to see MSFT is on top of thing!
It seems whatever it is must be elusive to MSFT because there is no help for it whatsover.

1) Start an elevated command prompt
2) Run the following command:
reg query hklm\components /s | findstr /i “x86_microsoft-windows-zipfldr_31bf3856ad364e35_” >> c:\file_not_found_analysis.txt
3) Email c:\file_not_found_analysis.txt to vistasp1logs@hotmail.com along with a link to this thread and your username so I know who sent it
- Done!
Txt file is blank but I have manually extracted from that registry section all the keys containing the string After some investigation, it appears that this is an uncommon issue, but very severe. There is file corruption which could be attributed to any variety of things and we are actively investigating a general purpose solution for anyone in such a situation. If you could help us out here and provide some data from your machine, it would help us greatly to fix the issue before the final release.
Run this cmd from an elevated command prompt: “reg save hklm\components my_components.hiv”
Zip together the following files/directories:
1) (directory) %WINDIR%\logs\cbs
2) (directory) %WINDIR%\winsxs\manifests
3) (file, generated earlier) my_components.hivThis file will be fairly large, so please then send an email to vistasp1logs@hotmail.com so I can provide instructions on how to upload this file to us.
In the meanwhile, you can try running "chkdsk %SYSTEMDRIVE% /R" from an elevated command prompt, answering the question with "Y", rebooting your machine to let chkdsk run, and then trying again.
If this does not solve your problem you can do one of two things:
1) Download and install MBC from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=43655. Then file a bug with a name starting with "[SP1 RC1 Setup]", include your email address in the description, and wait for further instructions
2) Reinstall Vista and try the SP installation againSorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience
-- George
- Any news?
Thanks.
PS Obviously chkdsk didn't solved the problem... We are still working on having an automated solution to fix this problem. If anyone is hitting this, please send mail to vistasp1logs@hotmail.com so we can collect your logs!

- Any news?
Thanks.
PS Obviously chkdsk didn't solved the problem... We are still working on having an automated solution to fix this problem. If anyone is hitting this, please send mail to vistasp1logs@hotmail.com so we can collect your logs!
- Any update on this issue?
I used the beta client and sent in a report, with logs and everything. I am getting the same error with Vista 64 Bit Ultimate.
I haven't tried the Windows Update method but I suspect i would get the same error others are reporting.
- And now I'm in the same boat. My error codes change daily it seems
- Any update?????
- A update. This is from my CBS.log file.

In that case the only solution is reinstalling Vista from a clean source. - my solution for this error (i tried to istall the rc1 refresh 17128):
- uninstall old sp1 beta or rc
- reinstall vista (insert the cd and choose update)
- after the update iscomplete, install all updates via WU
- install the new SP1
Thomas - Hey it worked for me.
Thanks! tbruckschlegel wrote: my solution for this error (i tried to istall the rc1 refresh 17128):

This works for me too and doing those steps there's no need to reinstall programs or settings
ThanksTook a lot of time but it does work!
Thank you very many!
- Do you mean from inside of Windows, autoplay the CD and where it asks if you want to contact Microsoft for the latest installation updates? My error occurs when I attempt to get Windows Updates and all though I don't see an error code here, it fails to get the updates. Did you then proceed with the install? I don't have enough space for an upgrade and the other option states it will lose my settings and files.
- My Solution for this Error and most errors.. Very Simple:
WENT BACK TO WINDOWS XP as i never expereinced problems there
and ofcourse got rid of VISTA DVDs and told everyone i could about it
Lots of people have the error. There is no answer. My last look-see directed me towards DEFENDER or to disable it and re enable it after installation od SP1.
My Vista doesn't like SP1.
trying to download printer driver =all seems ok untill at the end it says error 80070002- i have tried lexmar tech = they say it could be hardwear problem but they can not help- Hello Everyone,
i discovered a possible sollution. I had the same problems myself. And all hints did no effect. So i enabled myself admin rights for "Windows\winsxs\Backup" - Folder and deleted all files in this folder. After that i loaded a program called "winsxs-backup(.exe?)". after i used this i tryed update for Vista SP1 again and it worked.... i hope that this helps you all. But i did so much before that i dunno every step of my windows-odyssee.
greetings
