The Windows Serviceability team is pleased to make available Windows XP Service Pack 3, Release Candidate 2 (XP SP3 RC2).

XP SP3 RC2 includes all previously released updates for the operating system, similar to earlier service packs. It also includes previously released updates to the latest versions of some system components, as well as functionality that makes it easier for enterprises to co-manage both Windows XPSP3 and Windows Vista PCs within same corporate environment.

Information regarding XP SP3 can be found on the Windows XP TechCenter. Release notes for Release Candidate 2 can be found on the Microsoft Download Center. Windows XP SP3 is scheduled for release in the first half of 2008.

While the SP3 update is available for anyone, we want to remind you that it is pre-release software, is time-limited, and is intended for IT professionals, developers, and other technically-inclined individuals that are comfortable using pre-release software.

The application to enable XP SP3 RC2 download can be found at the Microsoft Download Center. Running this application on a machine with Windows XP Service Pack 2 will enable Windows Update to offer XP SP3 RC2 to that machine. Build to build upgrades are not supported for this beta release, so if you have installed XP SP3 RC1, please uninstall it before running this application.

As with Release Candidate 1, we encourage feedback on XP SP3 RC2 via this TechNet forum.

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards,

    Windows Serviceability

To answer your question, Chris said, "it is pre-release software, is time-limited," and "Build to build upgrades are not supported for this beta release."

Still is not compatible with Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 Pro, regular version. SP3 RC1 worked with their beta version of same.

I have no clue what the problem is, but no matter what I do, the SP3 fails to install. I am on my fourth attempt in vm to get this build 3311 downloaded and installed. Has anyone else manage to download and install it successfully?

Can this be installed over build 2600? As I can't uninstall it.... and can only install in safe mode..

Whoops.. just read the instructions that it can't be installed over the previous versions... I guess I'm stuck with a reformatting..

Does that mean that this one can be installed on a clean install of Windows XP RTM without either SP1 or SP2 installed first now?

Also, is there no redistributable available to download like there was for RC1 here:

Same problem here.  I ended up with the Express install version and it errored out when it went online to download files. (winxpsp3.windowsupdate.com or some such site).

Anyway, waiting for the full install version to not have to put up with such hassles...

Unfortunately, I cannot. That VM was deleted many SP3 WU download attempt's ago. And as it stands now, I am unable to even see the beta available anymore by using the MS reg exe installer. This will be try # I have lost count. But, since the only time I was able to see the beta available for download was when I ran the exe before attempting any updates at all on a fresh install of SP2, I am going to attempt to "find" the beta again. I will document as much as possible if it is shown for download again. If it is still not there, I will be going on the assumption the download was pulled from availability due to errors installing.

OK. Victory at last! SP# found, downloaded and installed! the VM is now rebooting.
For what it is worth, the ONLY way I myself was able to see the beta was, fresh install of xp sp2, run exe reg file, run all updates, restart, install more updates, restart, back to WU and grab SP3. Also another thing to note. The first time I saw this SP3 on my first attempt, i showed in the betas section. Same with the second time. On the final time that worked, SP3 did not show up on the "beta" list to the left like most updates show. The interface was completely different this time around. Even the downloading and installing part was completely different. But yeah. SP3 v3311 finally installed.

I'm on SP3 v3311 now as well - though it took running it through the automatic update applet instead of the Windows Update site.  I believe, though, this is what you wanted to know (which is what I expected given the way the installer was acting, but wasn't clear from the presented message).

While I recognize that in releasing it only in this way, you are looking to test the Windows Update side of things with regard to pushing this service pack, it is kind of misleading to post a "If this error persists go to the Microsoft Download Center to download the service pack" message in there at this stage of the game.

I am running it now, though.  So I will see if I encounter any problems.

.... but, what if I need to download the whole SP3 RC2 file (somewhere around 336mb)?  I am on satellite here at home as well as where I work at the winery.  They have limits on how much can be downloaded in any given 24 hours, called a "Fair Access Policy", FAP.  But, during the hours of 3:00 to 6:00 AM what we downloaded is not subject to the FAP.  If I could download, from at home starting around 2:55, I could get in the download without any chance of going above  my FAP.

I had downloaded the RC1, and tried it on my computer at work, which is a non critical computer, IE  No printers or particular files are stored on this computer, so if it was down for a while, not a huge loss.  When I installed SP1 there was a conflict with one of the programs we run,  a 16 bit application, that lets our Windows XP computers connect to our UNIX server (SCO UNIX) and run some programs located there.  We use an emulation program that we bought the licenses for 10 users, from J.River Software, and it is called DejaVu NT.  I think this is going back to the days of Windows 95, and later. However, we are able to run the interface on our XP machines with the SP2 installed.

I would like to try the newere SP3 RC2, but  because of the downloading issues, would just like to find a link to download the whole stand alone service pac.  Is there a link?

    Thank you very much !

    Hi Darth,

If you read carefully on this acticle, you should find the link. Otherwise, please go to http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2872781&SiteID=17. Either way, each download can be very slow if you're on satelite. Good luck!

    Bradley,

SP3 is not for Windows XP 64bit. It is written on page 10 of SP3 Overview.

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/8/7/687484ed-8174-496d-8db9-f02b40c12982/Overview%20of%20Windows%20XP%20Service%20Pack%203.pdf

    Code Snippet
Windows XP SP3 is for x86 editions of Windows XP only. The x64 editions of Windows XP were serviced by Windows Server 2003 SP2. For additional information, go to
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

There is no listed stand alone installer yet. But, I am downloading a SP3 directly from http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/svpk/2008/02/*****************************
I will report back if it is indeed the 3311 standalone.

Same problem here.  I ended up with the Express install version and it errored out when it went online to download files. (winxpsp3.windowsupdate.com or some such site).

Anyway, waiting for the full install version to not have to put up with such hassles...

    Hi,

I met same problem with you yesterday. Now, I installed SP3 v3311 via WU. Pls see my step as below:

    1. Uninstalled SP3 v3300.

    2. Run Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2.exe. (down load from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=114F3599-12AF-42B2-AAB1-B969A62C68A7&displaylang=en)

    3. Checked if you installed subinacl.exe. If not download and install subinacl.exe.

    4. Create a file called reset.cmd with Notepad. Copy the text below into the file reset.cmd and run reset.cmd with administrative rights (it may take a LONG time):

    cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

    5. Run windows update.

Good lucky. You may install Sp3 v3311 successfully.

(After installation, one system message reminded some erroe found. I allowed to send the report to MS.)

You are absolutly right but they don't know that this pirated CD's have not the value of 1 us dollar even not of an empty cd. If they will look and examine the files in \i386 then they will know the quality of the source what they got and use. Not only that this isos are almost altered. I will request the money back plus the time for installation put in charge. For this you will have enough money to buy an original and know what you have.

Wow Delta, you going to SPAM every thread with this nonsense?

BETA software is for limited testing.  The other languages will be covered WHEN THE SOFTWARE IS ACTUALLY RELEASED.

What part of BETA are you missing?  It is no secret that very few non-English languages ever get covered in a BETA test.

NO!  Just install ontop of SP2.  YOU MUST HAVE SP1 + S2 installed for SP3 to install.

I think there is redistributable available.  It's best to wait for the final verison to come on first, to make sure there are less errors!

Can someone please help me. I just installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 candidate 2 on my SP2 Home Edition XP. Since it tells me to restart my computer I did and then it just kept reseting when it tried to load the operating system. At first I started it into safe mode, but now it is saying my hal.dll is currupt. Even the compaq recovery console won't repair Windows like it claims it will, the last resort option Compaq Recovery Console has is a complete factory reset including operating system, but with my luck it will delete everything including operating system. Any way now it just restarts again and again. Is their any help for me. I don't have a CD either since my computer was purchased with XP on it, but I have my product Key on the side of the computer.

Obtain a Cd with Windows XP home OEM ( for sale only with a new Pc.......  - printed on the CD )  from a friend or family.

This kind of CD matches the "sticker on side of PC" type of key.

Ask them to make a "disk to disk" copy to a blank CD.

This should not be a problem from a legal point of view.

We had a similar problem at one of the computers at work I tried SP3 RC1 on.  Kept rebooting and finally had to restore the registry to make it come back alive.

Is it really necessary to install a SP3 if one keeps up with all the updates and hotfixes that come from Microsoft update?

    Hi,

We know of an existing issue with SP3 RC1 where the AMD processor based machines end up in an endless reboot cycle after SP3 installation. Basically, they are hitting a Windows STOP error (Blue screen), which leads to the reboot.

We have made a fix for the issue in subsequent builds of SP3.

To confirm if you are hitting the same issue, can you please confirm the value of the following registry key from the affected system (before SP3 installation or in the current working state).

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\Start

    Thanks

I will look when I'm at work.  I know all the machines at work are AMD based because I built them.  The ones at home are as well.  I looked in my registry, and thre is no Intelppm  But there is an instance of AMD in the same area of the registry.

    Shashank,

At work and checked the computer that went into a continuous reboot cycle after SP3 RC1.  Looked in the registry where you suggested and there is no Intelppm listed in the \CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\Start   I even did a search from the SYSTEM point for Intelppm and did not find it.  We never had any intel processors in use on these machines, and I think the only one that might have an intel chip on it now is the Lenova laptop we got for the Vineyard Manager.

Getting toward the end of March, and is there any idea on when the RTM might be available for download?

I was offered this pack by automatic update, with no indication that it was a beta edition. It installed with no problem but, when I restarted Windows XP, there was no Network Connection icon in the task bar, the Internet Connections window is empty, the Network Setup Wizard says it cannot find my network hardware and Device Manager is empty. I have uninstalled SP3 and am now running SP2, but the problems still exist. Despite this I am still able to access the internet and send/receive e-mail. Any suggestions?

hal.dll is also a part of a major/critical function of XP as well, located in Windows/System32

Without the critical dll file, ie: corrupted/missing file, then the OS will refuse to boot, as it will report as it's missing/corrupted at bootup of the OS.

hal.dll is what is needed for Windows to comunicate with your hardware.

Some spyware/trojans even viruses can disguise itself/replace the ligitimate version of it, if in doubt run an online checker to confirm the file though it's CRC, size and so on.

(Yes I know the last post is 9 days old, just replying to it, to clear up some things.)

Wow, thanks for the laugh.  Smile  That was awesome - but I'll try to help out too in return.

    A)  The purpose of an Operating System is to facilitate meaningful communication with all the computers hardware.  Since DOS gave way to Windows environments, the purpose of the Operating System has been expanded to also include the secondary purpose of creating an intuitive graphical interface to communicate with you.  Now you don't need to understand how all your hardware works, or how to code programs, to use a computer effectively anymore.  Windows makes a nice "Candy Shell" so that nearly anyone can get some use out of a computer.

    B)  In order to communicate with your hardware, Windows uses hal.dll, a generic driver model, and hardware specific drivers.  Hal.dll is Windows "Hardware Abstraction Layer" Dynamic Link Library.  There are many Dynamic Link Library files in Windows and in programs designed for Windows.  There were developed to help reduce redundant code.  Having a single series of .dll files allowed multple sources to access the same commands.  The Hardware Abstraction Layer Dynamic Link Library is a shared resource for the generic driver model and all "vendor/hardware model specific" drivers.  The hal.dll must be loaded in memory so that Windows can, in turn, use the drivers properly.  There are Driver Development Kits (DDK) available for free online if you want to learn more about creating drivers or the model upon which they are built.  But the path to all your computers hardware, as far as Windows is concerned, is Windows->Hal.dll->Driver model->Specific Driver->actual hardware.

    C)  The most successful viruses pose as legitimate Windows files.  That is to say, they use the same file names as legitimate Windows files so that when you see them in Task Manager you are less likely to suspect them.  There are lots that pose a svchost and the like.  Hal.dll is a really essential and legitimate Windows system file - though there are no dount many viruses out there that use the same file name.  It all depends on where the file is saved on your hard driive really.  You can not have two files of identical names contained within the exact same folder.  Alternatively, some viruses infect legitimate files, rather than exist as seperate files on their own.

If you ran into a scenario where hal.dll was reported as a virus, trojan horse, rootkit, spyware, malware, or what have you, then you ran into a scenario like one of the 2 just mentioned above.  It does not change the fact that there is a necessary file named hal.dll on every Windows machine.

    D)  Norton is awesome.  So is F-Secure.  I would say you can trust the following:

You should only use one firewall, and one Anti-virus - but with the other categories, the more the merrier.  Don't be lazy and rely simply on products alone to save you also.  Supplement these with research into program settings and operating system settings you can do to help harden your systems security.  Black Viper has an online resource of Windows settings and services you can disable and the like so to make Windows XP more secure as well.  Check it out - and at the very least, disable the alerter service and the messenger service.  Some programs like nLite even let you REMOVE THESE SERVICES COMPLETELY BEFORE A FRESH INSTALLATION.  Doesn't get more secure than that for these considerations.  Avoid Windows Live One Care - I worked for Microsoft when it launched - it sucks.  Microsoft even admitted that it missed over 80% of viruses out there in a CNET interview shortly after launch retorting in defense that MS would soon use a system that classified viruses so to enhance detection - to which the CNET interviewer said "oh, you mean like ever other virus product already does" - to which MS replied "well, ...  yeah".  Just pick a mature product instead.

    Anyway, hope this all helps.

I love the list of wares. You missed one that I find very useful, and free - C(rap)Cleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/

It removes all of the temp files and (rap in the system with a right click on the recycle bin. ( I notice that this site pre-edits the posts to get rid of words like "***".)

As for hal.dll, I came across that error years ago, and I just deleted the file. The system rebuilds it on reboot and then  Windows worked fine.

Hey, your welcome.  CCleaner is good too - I did forget that, but god - I couldn't possibly make a conclusive list that was accepted as conclusive by everyone.  I forgot some other gems like hijackthis and webroot window washer, too.  For cosmetics, the new Window blinds finally does its thing without being a resource hog (previous editions required an exe running in the background at all times - that is no longer the case in 6.0 which is great news for my underpowered P3 laptop which now enjoys the cosmetic freedom whereas before it was too much a drain to be worth it).  The PGP Suite is still the best for encryption, too - but it isn't free.  Most of what I listed is free, many have free online scans also, which is good for a second opinion and can help clean an infected system, though it won't protect the system from infection

This was more for those rather new to the idea of system security.  It's a good starting point for those who haven't yet researched their options to know whats out there, or to know how to recognize a real security program from a virus suite posing itself as a security program (a rouge applicatin, as some call it - and yes, I'm dumbing it down here not for you but for the aforementioned target audience).

Thanks for the worthy addition to the list.

Well if anyone still wonders what I did. I gave up. I just told my system to revert back to factory default settings.

Anyway so it went back to SP2 and everything is just fine. I ended up building my own computer running vista Ultimate. Anyway so I don't need help anymore with Hal.dll and to that person who said it was spyware my response is NO its a system file.

How do you uninstall RC1?  just Remove Programs in Control Panel, or are there other tweaks to this?
    Thank you

Just use the SP3 uninstaller from "Add or Remove Programs", as you say.

One anti-virus that is rarely mentioned is PREVX. It can be used with other anti-virus. It learns from the reports of PREVX data from all users. The company seems pretty confidant that it is `al you need.'

It did find some nasty things on a computer I `inherited,'  including at least one thing that my normal antivirus didn't get.

An expert evaluation of their softare (actually using it in controlled setting with new and old viruses and rootkits, etc.) would be interesting.
