Proposed AnswerCan not windows update after SP3

Found SP3 available on Windows Update site, I downloaded and installed it.  However after the install my machine would not install any further updates from Windows Update.  It would download them but fail on the install.  I simply restored my computer to just before I downloaded SP3 and that seemed to fix the issue.  Is this a known issue or possibly unique to my system?  I'm on an E-Machine T6524 stock equipped unning Windows XP Media SP2.

You are not alone on this one.  I have two machines that have fresh re-installs with SP3 as the only update. Both were SP2 Pro after restore.  I can't seem to get anything to update, seems to only be with MS software.  Other 3rd party software installs just fine.  I find this very disconcerting.  Both machines are Dells.

    Me too...

Just installed 3 computers and updated them with SP3. After this Microsoft Update keeps finding 3 upgrades and downloading them but cannot install (.NET 1.1 SP1, KB928365 and KB941569).

Also I cannot install any of the Live products including Messenger (again the Live installer seemes to download the things I have chosen but cannot install) and Windows Defender cannot update.

    What is going on?

Just got a new computer and installed XP, and as with all 3 posts above, installed SP3. After that I could not install any MS software (ex. messenger live) and updates failed. Could not update windows defender either.

Now I'm just ghosting back to an older image that I made, and staying with SP2 until this problem is resolved...

If you are having any issues read these Release Notes on SP3

Did I miss something or do the release notes not mention anything even remotely related to this issue?  I have the same thing by the way. Fresh install, SP3 installed, now no other updates will install.

Same issue here... i had last week updated all the updates from the windows update web...

today i downloaded the SP3 from MS for network installation and installed with no problems....

MSN messenger did reinstall it self agian after the first boot-up after sp3 was installed

then i checked for windows update agian and it downloads 1 update but fails to install...

also checked defender and that program can't download defination updates

Also tried updating firefox from  version 2.0.0.12 to 2.0.0.14 that works fine...

all the usual programs are fully working...

I have evan tryed running running 'regsvr32 wups2.dll' mentioned in another post somewhere else and still if fails to install updates from windows update as before...

is there anyone with a solution for this error...

    i have just tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

and tried both methods.... still no good

and just had an ATI error saying there is no driver installed...

everything looks fine in the device manager...

Can you people please share the windowsupdate*.log. You can mail them to me at vishalch[AT]Microsoft[DOT]com.

You will find these logs at %windir% (Should be like, WindowsUpdate.log, WindowsUpdate (1).log etc)

Also, if possible please share the KB Logs located at %windir% for the KB articles that failed to install.

For E.g: KB941569 failed to install then share %windir%\KB941569.log

    Thanks,

    Vishal

Most of the logs shared have generic problems. They dont seems to relate to Sp3 as such.

I suggest going through the these links ( and search online) to get your problem solved.

    Hi Sabastian,

    Easy to fix.

Just go to C:\Windows\System32 and find and register Wups2.dll.

To do that, right click on it and select 'Open With' then 'Choose Program' and find C:\Windows\System32\Regsvr32.

If you choose to 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' then all you will have to do is double click on any .dll to register it.

Once you have registered Wups2.dll your problem will disappear.

    I hope this helps.

    Gary O'Connor.

PS: If you are a programmer it is probably worth doing the same with a .ocx file to make them easily registerable with a double click.

Hi, i had the same problem.

I just instaled 2 pcs with XP Pro SP2 cd, installed the network file SP3, tried to do more updates and they would not install.

I just register the *.dll and the updates will install without any problem.

I am not having this issue (since I already uninstalled SP3), but the difference in attitude between Gary and the Microsoft drones is remarkable.  Gary read the question, found out the answer and gave it, while the Microsoft drones anwer to every question is:

    1.  Read the release notes of this perfect SP3.

    2. Was your computer ritually cleansed before coming into the presence of our almighty and perfect SP3? You must also uninstall everything under the sun that was working before.  No non Microsoft (and even some made by us) software can ever withstand the greatness of SP3.  Only we know how to write bug free software.

    3. All hardware that is externally attached even if made by Microsoft, and half the processors in the world are incompatible with SP3.  We infact knew this was an issue.  The damn OEMs never listen to us and make compatible products.  We were just playing nice when SP2 was installed.  Now we are laying down the law.  The most popular PC maker of last generation (HP) with the most popular gaming processor of last few years (AMD64) are obviously no exception to this rule.  We tested on this and knew that their would be issues, but we can't be bothered to mess with the perfection that is SP3.

    3. Log files.  Screw you having to restore functionality to your computer.  We need your log files first.  There are a thousand other people with the same issue that have already given us their log files but we need your log files.

My problem must have been different.  After the fourth contact with MS support my system appears to be fine.  Here is what the level 3 MS IE7 tech did.  Removed SP3.  Uninstalled IE7 using a link to some web based software.  Reinstalled IE7.  Updated SP2  version of XP Pro MCE 2002 completely and repeatedly until all updates were installed and KB 947864 was seen in Add/Remove.  I then reinstalled SP3.  So far so good!  The tech says it was something corrupted in the original IE7.  His words:

Here is a summary of the key points of the service request for your records:

    Action: Tried to install KB947864
    Result: Unable to install KB947864
    Cause: Corrupted installation of IE7
Resolution: Uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled and also installed KB947864 successfully

    Hey Gary,

My problem is slightly different but I think the solution will be similar to the one you provided.  I have a clean install of XP with SP3 (I did not upgrade from SP2).  I am trying to install the DST patch KB931836 and am receiving the same error message.  However when I go to C:\Windows\System32 I do not find a file called Wups2.dll.  There is a Wups.dll file though.  I tried registering it using your instructions but still receive the error.  Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Joe

i will say this much. i have 2 windows machines and 2 macs. I have no issues with my macs, even after upgrading from tiger to leopard or on any updates... NONE. On my windows i upgraded one computer to SP3. i didn't notice any issues but i never tried updating after SP3.. lets face it microsoft does nothing but drop the ball... need an example look at vista....

I decided to wipe out my laptop and start fresh. I installed windows xp sp2 and then i went to update to SP3. after the update i was not able to update anymore. All i got was errors, its microsoft so i figured i would have to just do another install... making me realize how much i love my macs.

I decided to try google because i am sick of fresh installs. I found this topic with the fix on the previous page. Thank you Gary O'Connor.

All i can say is that microsoft is hopeless and they really don't have a clue as to what they are doing. if you want proof just look at the program files. They actually have comments in their code saying they have no idea what it is but it works.... WTF?!

This is a SP3 bug and microsoft is again not taking responsibility and saying that it's not. I have never seen a system that introduces more bugs by bug fixes... Why doesn't microsoft hire some real programmers? Some that can fix things? Not to mention, why am i having to down grade my Vista to XP? oh, that's right... because microsoft blows.

I am finishing the updates on the laptop and selling it to my neighbor now. This truely is the last straw. Microsoft sucks at EVERYTHING they do... xbox360? lmao, a joke, you pay $50 a year for ads.. the ads use more resources and slow the xbox even more... who remembers how much better it ran before the ads?? Then they ALWAYS BURN UP!! i am off suject here... sorry about that. back to some truth about microsoft.

SP3 is messing up peoples computers stop denying it. It is it is a fact, get off your butts and do something. You don't need logs for each user out there. personally i would never give microsoft my logs.. but that is just because my hatred is growing with them everyday. And asking for logs is just a way they can say they need more time because they are all incompetent.

lmao i got way of subject here. anyways, thanks(not microsoft) for the fix! Obviusly i am pissed about this entire ordeal.

Vatstco, your complains about Microsoft's update practices are an exercise in futility. If you do not like their software, use another. Apple will be happy to take your business, but you can pitch your current software and hardware.. OR you can try a linux/unix flavor like Free Ubuntu or RedHat, but you will have a much smaller tech help base if you run into any problems, and yes, you will again have to forego using your currently licensed software (although there are open source versions or most) and learn new software, machine maintenance techniques, and programming languages. Good luck to you.

Microsoft does make every attempt to corner the market by being as user friendly and secure as they can, but with every advance in technology, there are backwards compatibility issues that can't be avoided, but they can be found by trial and error, which we all see here. They do provide us this forum as an aide to alleviate a lot of the new and old issues, so give credit where it's due.

    - Just a 10 year Corporate Network Admin's thoughts

Also, for those having difficulty in an unattended install, incorporate a batch file containing:

    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\wups2.dll /s

P.S. And Yes, I have had to learn Apple & Unix/Linux flavors as well and they have both advantages and disadvantages.

    Hi people

First time I have used this forum - and how very useful it is.  I'm sure to be back!

Anyway, I note that Microsoft have had a solution to this problem available since October 2007.  It is at:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

However, I would only have found this if I had read this forum first!  I think I searched google for wups2.dll - it was the 2nd entry on the 1st page.

    Thanks again

     Proposed Answer

    Solved!

    Many thanks to Gary.

I was having this same issue on a newly built machine.  I had installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 from OEM media then upgraded using a download of SP3 from a few weeks ago.  Windows Updates was failing on both

    1) .NET 1.1 SP1 KB928365

    2) KB941569,

regardless of whether I used Microsoft Update or Windows Update.

I tore my hair out a lot, used the .NET Installation Cleanup utility as discussed in some Microsoft articles, and tried a few other things.

24 hours later I rebuilt the computer in question (same method: XP SP2 installation from OEM media then SP3 update) and was worried to see the exact same thing happening.

Perhaps if I had used a later download of the SP3 package from more recent days instead of using an older version I downloaded a while ago, it is fixed?  I don't know... but Gary's post solved the problem for me.
