SP3 and Flash Player Problems ALSO!
A few weeks ago I purchased a downloadable game from Oberon called Word Riot Deluxe. It was working perfectly until I installed SP3 on my XP OS.
Realizing that SP3 probably screwed up the game, I uninstalled SP3, but I guess by that time, the damage had already been done because I can not access the game anymore. Each time I click the button "Play Now", I get an error box telling me "This game requires Flash Player 8 or higher to run. Would you like to automatically install Flash Player now?"
If I say yes, (even though I have already installed Flash Player version 9.0.124.0) it gives me another box that says, "The version of Adobe Flash Player ActiveX that you are trying to install is not the most current version. Please visit http://adobe.com/go/getflashplayer to obtain the lastest, most secure version." Huh? I just LEFT there with the newest version! I can also see a box behind this box that has a header bar title of "Adobe Flash Player ActiveX Set" and shows a horizontal progress bar with the Output Folder listed as "C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash" and it shows 4 little progress bars. There's a "Show Details" box, but I can not gain access to see the details.
Since I have no other option after this occurs except to say "OK"....I click OK, and that brings up yet ANOTHER box that says, "Flash Player could not be installed. It is possible that you do not have permission to install applications on this computer. You can try installing it manually from http://www.adobe.com".
As far as I can tell, Flash IS installed on the computer because I have no problem accessing anything else. Someone told me there was 2 Flash programs, one for the web browser, and one for stand alone programs. I am not that knowledgeable about computers per se, so I am asking for all your knowledge in helping me figure this out.
All I know is it worked fine before SP3, and is screwed up since SP3 even after I uninstalled SP3.
I uninstalled the flash player, the shockwave player, and the java. Then I went to the individual sites and downloaded and installed the newest versions they had for each one. I also uninstalled the game itself, and waited until I had all the other things updated to the newest versions before I reinstalled the game itself. All the updates went in fine. They said they were installed successfully.
Can someone PLEASE shed some light on this? I'm totally in the dark as to what to do next.
Thanks in advance.

Please delete the file c:\windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\flash.ocx and try again.
Thanks for the reply, Robin.
Deleted the flash.ocx like you said and tried again. Went to www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer and installed the program. I saw it put it in the Macromed/flash folder. It actually put 3 items in there: Flash9f.ocx.....FlashUtil9f.exe....and uninstall_activeX.exe. That makes a total of 5 files and one folder marked FlashPlayerTrust in the Macromed/Flash folder.
Tried to run the game, and I got the same old thing. Tells me I need a newer version....then goes through the junk about what I'm trying to install is not the most current version, etc., etc., etc.
I also have Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional installed, could that be a problem?
I'm at a TOTAL loss!
- Hi.....I have been having the same exact probs with OBERON games.....The tech (if they have any) have been unwilling to help me and just tolf me to pick another game....so I did.....same results!!!
The only difference I see is that My husband was just playing their pirate game and decided he wanted to purchase it so he did and it works fine.....All the games that I wanted were games that I had downloaded before , played until trial period expired and then I deleated them......Then downloaded them again once I decided I wanted them and thats where the trouble began....I believe the game is leaving some sort of foot prints on the hard drive that is causing the new downloaded version not to recogonish flash...and I think Oberon needs to get off their butt and find out what the problem is!!!!!
Let me know if you found a fix please....
You don't sell software unless you can help people when they don't work!!! Hi BeachN,
I found this in Pogo help and decided to try it step by step....and it worked like a charm! Hopefully it will solve your problems too!
QuestionWhy am I being told to install the Flash Player for my Pogo Downloadable game, and how do I install it?AnswerIf you are having a problem with being asked to install the Flash Player but are then encountering an error please try these steps:
First you will need to do a Clean Uninstall of Flash
- Go to Adobe's website and click on the 'Flash Player Uninstaller' for your operating system
- Choose Save, and then save the file to your desktop
- Right-click on the file you downloaded and choose 'Create Shortcut'
- Right-click on the Shortcut you just made and choose 'Properties'
- A new screen will appear. In the Target field add “ /clean” so that it looks like this:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\uninstall_flash_player.exe" /clean
Note: Make sure there is a space after the “ and before the / - Click OK
- Double-click on the Shortcut you created to run it
- Click OK and Close when prompted
Next you need to run the game and install the latest Flash Player
- Launch the game and you will be prompted to install the latest Flash player
- Click OK to install the Flash Player, it should install and you should be able to play the game
If after following those steps above you are still encountering the Flash error please try these additional steps:
Your game has a special flash installer included in the download. This file is found in the following directory by default
C:\Program files\Oberon Media\<Your game's name>\Tools\InstallFlash9.exe
Please follow these instructions to browse to the above location and install the correct version of flash:
- Click on My Computer
- Double-Click C: (This is the default install directory)
- Double-Click Program Files
- Double-Click Oberon Media
- Double-Click <Your game's name>
- Double-Click Tools
- Double-Click InstallFlash9.exe
This file should reinstall the correct files for your flash player.
Thank you for this!! I have been dealing with this problem EXACTLY both with your game and with another oberon-media game called Turtix. I could no longer play EITHER of them and I have been working with DELL for more than ten days to try to figure out what is causing the problem. After much trial and tribulation we (DELL and I) reinstalled windows xp media edition (my operating system) again from scratch. As I began to perform the updates I watch as each one installed and I believe I have discovered two things. I am still at the discovery stage of this but there is ONE security update file that starts the whole "flashing" business and won't allow access to these games. That update file is specifically "Security update KB944653" I have removed that one file from my machine and am still rebuilding everything else but Right AFTER that file installed during the updates (I have not even downloaded SP3 yet) I noticed the flashes began with my mouse arrow and they had been gone till then so I deleted the file. When I did I got a notice that "by deleting this file all these other files might not work correctly" followed by a list of 10 or 12 other updates. I deleted the file anyway. I did this by going to control panel/add remove programs/ and finding the update file KB944653 and removing it from there.
so far so good no more flashing. Check out your list of security updates and find that file and remove it. Save a restore point before you do so if it doesn't work for you or it causes any problems you can do a system restore. Also the problem with the FLASH PLAYER is not the Adobe flash player it is THE WINDOWS FLASH PLAYER. I have not addressed this problem yet and it seems to have dissappeared with the removal of the security update I just told you about. I am going to test this by downloading the game again and seeing how it works. If no problems then I shall be writing to both microsoft and to oberon media as well as dell and tell them what the problem is. have fun working it out. It has taken me at least 10 days on the phone with Dell figuring this out and I basically discovered which file it was on my own. Although they helped me uninstall my operating system and reinstall it from my disks so if your computer is still under warranty you can get help to do all that. If not...well I hope you know how to back everything up and zero out your windows by reinstalling from the disk. I already knew how but I let the techs do it with a connection. My computer is an xps720 high powered gaming computer and I should never be having trouble playing simple pogo type games on here!!!! Good luck
I have the same deal going on as you LoneWolf and I tried everything on here and I still get those messages when I click on play. (I also have the pogo games: Word Riot Deluxe, Tri Peaks 2 etc...) It's weird because they didn't work for me then they did for a month and now it's back to the 'ol flash player 8 or higher deal. Any other things I could try? Also when I tried the instructions from pogo I got this error message after I tried to do the "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\uninstall_flash_player.exe" /clean
The 'C
Make sure the path and file name are correct.

You are not intended to type that command literally. You have to replace the string "Owner" with the string that is appropriate to your use of the Desktop. You also have to ensure that it says
"C:\Documents and Settings ... " etc
and not just
"C
ocuments and Settings ..." etc which the error message suggests is what you actually typed.
Thank you my word riot woes are over. This fixed my no install flash player problem GREAT post!- This actually is not a problem with SP3. I had this problem even before I loaded SP3. It is actually a problem with pogo games not recognizing FP10 and in turn FP not allowing you to download their older versions that pogo has planted in their downloadable games. I do not know how to fix it either and have been struggling with this for weeks now.
- Thank you Lonewolf! This worked!
