I've seen a couple of other posts on other forums descirbing this problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Dell Vostro 200 Core 2 Duo. XP SP2 out of the box. (literally, I've got 10 more to install)

    Run Win Update, install SP3.

    Reboot.

Win Update. Install IE7 and latest malicious software.

    Both updates fail to install.

"Install failed because there is a problem with your computer"

No error messaages nothing. No anti-virus installed yet. Nothing done except installation of SP3.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

I am having exactly the same issue.  Tried SP3 install from Windows Update on three machines, all three fresh XP SP2 installs with the only thing done to them is the SP3 update.  After the SP3 Update ALL additional updates from Windows/Microsoft Update fail.

    Evening /morning

Just asking this portion, did you install Sp3 from an adminstrator account? logging in as adminstrtor or apply subinacl.exe? If yes go on to the next portion.

Did you apply the other suggestions from xp solution center pre-install?

     I would try 3 , 4, 5 from here

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950718

and this page has a few sugguestions, *though may not apply in your cases*

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949388

If none of these work, check the setupapi in %windir% and the windows Update log file. If you cannot find anything from searching. Post back your results here in a new thread but refference this thread.

I had similar problems, with a brand new PC with XP Media Center version that before looking to solution I re-installed 3 times.. :-(

I tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950718 with no result

The patch download works and I can install each manually.

I just had the same problem. Brand new Panasonic Toughbook CF-74. Windows XP Pro SP2. Very first thing, I did a manual Windows Update check to see if SP3 would be the recommended update. Sure enough it was. However, instead of doing a download, I used the standalone SP3 installer that I had previously downloaded from MS.

All went well with the SP3 update. No problems. No error messages. Reboot was clean.

However, all subsequent updates failed with the 0x80004002 error message in the WindowsUpdate.log, but no failure to install line item for any of these updates was shown in the update history list produced by a subsequent online WU check.

registering Wups2.dll as per the following instructions fixed the problem:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

After performing the reregistration procedure, I did another manual online WU check, accepted the list of updates, and they all applied just fine.

Editorializing a bit, having this kind of problem with SP3 is just utterly unacceptable, and MS better get their act together in a hurry and get some kind of bulletin out about this problem, or better yet, fix it.

I've got a whole bunch of commercial clients that ought to have SP3 installed, and I just lost confidence in SP3.

     Proposed Answer

Just an FYI. I submitted an online help request to MS about this problem.  Here's their reply:

    Dear Basil,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Kino and I am glad to work with you. To contact me, you can send emails directly to my account: v-30kiyu@mssupport.microsoft.com with the case ID SRX1067555739 in the subject line.

From your description, I understand that updates cannot be installed after installing the Windows XP Service Pack 3. If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

After checking the WindowsUpdate.log which was uploaded automatically when submitting the case, I noticed that the error code 0x80004002 was received.

This error is most likely caused by one of the following conditions:

    1. Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.

    2. Some DLL files are corrupted.

    3. Installer 3.1 is corrupted.

We will address some of the more common causes of this issue. It is important that we attempt to connect to the Windows Update web site after each step to confirm whether the resolution has worked. This will prevent us from having to proceed with additional troubleshooting steps and provide us with valuable feedback to further develop our support resolutions for you and our future customers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later. Please be sure to re-enable them after completing the update process.

Suggestion 1: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0

    ======================================

    1. Please download the file from the following link:

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

    2. Save the file to "C: drive".

    3. Click "Start", "Run", type: "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press "Enter" to install the Windows Update engine.

There is a space between "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce".

Lets now try Windows Update again and see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If it has not, please proceed to the next step.

    Suggestion 2: Register DLL files

    =======================

By trying this step, we can check the update engines.

    1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.

    2. Click "Start" and "Run", type "REGSVR32 ATL.DLL" (without quotations) in the open box and click "OK".

Note: There is a space between REGSVR32 and ATL.DLL

    3. Register the files listed below:

    REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

    REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL

    REGSVR32 QMGRPRXY.DLL

    REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL

Note: Please register all the files. While registering each .DLL file you should get a "succeeded" message. If any error message is encountered , please let me know the exact wording.

Lets now try Windows Update again and see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If it has not, please proceed to the next step.

Suggestion 3: Reinstall Windows Installer 3.1

    ==================================

    1. Press "Start" and choose "Run".

    2. Type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press "OK".

    3. In the command line, type in the following command and press "Enter":

    MSIexec /unregister

    4. Then, type in the following command and press "Enter":

    MSIexec /regserver

After completing  the above steps, please check the result again. If the issue persists, please click "Start", click "Control Panel", and click "Add or Remove Programs" to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed. If it has, please highlight and remove it. After that, please reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 from the following link.

    Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2):

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en

For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

If the above suggestions do not work, please re-enable the firewall and antivirus programs, and provide me with the following information for research.

    How to collect System Information:

    ===========================

    1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type in "MSINFO32" (without quotations) and press "Enter" to start System Information.

    2. On the "System Information" window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save as"; save it as an NFO file, such as "system.nfo" to your local Desktop.

    3. Locate the file, right-click on it, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

    4. Please send it as an attachment to v-30kiyu@mssupport.microsoft.com.

How to collect the Windows Update log file:

    ================================

Note: Since there are two Windows Update log files with similar names, please be aware that I am requesting the "WindowsUpdate.log" file without a space in the middle of the name.

    1. Click on "Start", "Run" and type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without quotations).

    2. Click on "OK". We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log".

    3. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As" and select "Desktop" in the "Save in" option on the top of the window.

    4. Click on "Save". The file will be saved to your Desktop. Please send it as an attachment to v-30kiyu@mssupport.microsoft.com.

However, if the file is unable to be collected by the above steps, we can also use the following method to collect it.

    1. Click "Start", "Run", type: "%windir%" (without quotations) and then press "Enter".

    2. In the open window, we will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log".

    3. Please send it as an attachment to: v-30kiyu@mssupport.microsoft.com.

Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the email application being used. While you are composing the email, most applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or a Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking on the "Attach" button.

Please try my suggestion and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    I await your response.

    Best Regards,

    This solution worked for me,

and I then had to do it again on a friends PC who hadnt noticed his updates were falling behind.

In my book this workaround has been tested successfully twice.

    Thanks Lu!

I tried everything and then found a solution after trying the folllowing:

None of the above worked, I then logged in as a different User and found out that SP3 replaced the User login with a hidden user_2 login, so once that did not work I switched logon names and was able to have the software recognize (SpyBot TeaTimer) that there was a logon replacement change with User, once I settled that things went back to my normal logon.  Because SP3 created a replacement Logon name with admin access that was not reconginzed it was a security risk to Windows and would not allow downloads.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

I have found that to prevent this install Windows Installer 3.11 standalone FIRST before SP3. Basically the Windows Installer that is included with SP2 doesn't update properly to version 3.1.

I used to have this problem with Windows 2000 too between regular and SP4. Updating the Windows Installer Manually fixed the problem.

The unfortunate thing is I forgot to do this before I imaged my machines and now I have 300 machines where Windows Update doesn't work (or WSUS either).

The solutions here are .exe which are not deployable via Group Policy so I guess I will be doing a lot of manual installs.

    Cheers,

    Lara

    No help here.

I honestly don't have a clue about why so many people have installation and update issues with SP3. I upgraded from SP 2 and have not had one single problem although I did install it by getting the CD from Microsoft rather than by downloading it. Maybe this makes some difference.
