Please answer my FAQs regarding XPSP3 RTM
Please answer my FAQs regarding XPSP3 RTM:
1. Can it be installed on Gold RTM ? I've read NO in the forums...you need at least SP1, simply for support reasons, in that case, Microsoft has lost my faith and broken its tradition of producing real cumulative service packs without ifs and buts. Why even Windows 2000 SP4 installed on the Gold version of Windows 2000. I request Microsoft to fix this and re-release.
2. Can it be slipstreamed into Gold RTM ? YES from what I've read.
3. Does it service .NET Framework components which shipped with Tablet PC and Media Center editions? By .NET components, I mean the framework versions 1.0/1.1 which ARE PREINSTALLED BY DEFAULT in Tablet and Media Center edition but not in XP Pro/Home. I don't mean the .NET setup included on the CD. AFAIK, Media Center is a .NET app, so has the runtime been serviced? If not, why not? Or does it service?
4. Does it include Update rollup 2 and last October 2006 XPMCE update rollup? What happens when SP3 is slipstreamed to XPMCE 2005 OEM? What's the version in MCE About?
5. If IE7 is installed, does it service that to IE7 SP1 or does it not touch it at all and leaves it alone?
6. Does it contain fully patched Media Player 9 Series (since XPSP2 contain WMP9)? In case of XPMCE 2005, does it contain fully patched WMP 10?
7. Does it include the latest DirectX runtime and other libraries (D3DX Dlls) distributed with current runtimes?
8. Certain KBs require doing some registry changes after installing the hotfix in order to activate/configure that hotfix. How is handled in a service pack and when it's slipstreamed?
9. XPSP2 updated the original XPMCE and XPMCE 2004. Will XPMCE 2004 be updated to XPMCE 2005 after applying SP3?

SP3 would not be installable on XP Gold RTM.
2. Can it be slipstreamed into Gold RTM ? YES from what I've read.
Yes, slipstream to Gold RTM is supported

Security updates to the preinstalled components would be updated by SP3. But, newer versions of the components would not be included.

No MCE 2006 update rollup is not included with SP3. Installation of SP3 on MCE 2005 would not modify the version.
5. If IE7 is installed, does it service that to IE7 SP1 or does it not touch it at all and leaves it alone?
no, IE7 is left alone during SP3 update
6. Does it contain fully patched Media Player 9 Series (since XPSP2 contain WMP9)? In case of XPMCE 2005, does it contain fully patched WMP 10?

8. Certain KBs require doing some registry changes after installing the hotfix in order to activate/configure that hotfix. How is handled in a service pack and when it's slipstreamed?
This is handled on a case by case basis. Some of the hotfixes are enabled by SP3 installation, while the others are not. Slipstreaming would have the same effect as installation of SP2.

After a registry manipulation it's able to install SP3 on Windows XP Gold/RTM/SP0. But this scenario isn't supported anyway by Microsoft, nor is it tested in details.
2. Can it be slipstreamed into Gold RTM ?
Yes.
I can't answer your MCE spefic questions though.
5. If IE7 is installed, does it service that to IE7 SP1 or does it not touch it at all and leaves it alone?
There won't be any direct updates for IE7. But there are system files which IE7 uses, which are going to be updated (browserui.dll, shdocvw.dll and shlwapi.dll for example).
6. Does it contain fully patched Media Player 9 Series (since XPSP2 contain WMP9)? Yes.
7. Does it include the latest DirectX runtime and other libraries (D3DX Dlls) distributed with current runtimes?
DirectX 9.0c is included in SP3. I'm not sure about the exact "flavour" though.

I hate to see Microsoft giving 2nd class treatment to XPMCE:
1. On Windows Update, I see a security patch for Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 after applying SP3.
2. Update rollup 2 and later 2006 rollups are not included as replied above yet they're not presented on Windows Update.

How do we know which case applies to a given hotfix?
Too late to edit ... let me clarify my question. The fix list in Q946480 is very long. In order to see if we're missing some fix not enabled by default which might nonetheless come in handy at some point, would we have to read each KB article in the list to see if the fix depends on certain registry changes, then check the registry if those changes are already present? In addition, can we take for granted that the version 5512 DLLs rely on the same registry entries as the older DLLs from the KB fix?
