AnswerMontevideo Time Zone Missing from SP3 rc; ref: KB 942763

Ran SP3 rc (Dec. 2007) over new base Windows XP Pro SP2 install as part of system rebuild .  All critical/important security updates through January 2007 showed good under MBSA 2.1 (beta).

Noted system time was now one hour off.  Then noted that Montevideo Standard Time had disappeared off time zone menu pick (was part of late 2006 update, I believe).

Ran Windows Update, no time zone update available.

Downloaded Dec. 2007 cumulative time zone update for Windows (KB 942763).   Update failed to run, returning error message of "This update is not compatible with this version of Windows" (or something close to that).

Manually created registry keys and entered string and binary data under REGEDIT to create the Montevideo Standard Time menu pick and time zone rules/offsets.  Seems to work OK, but it's a pain for one time zone, let alone all the other zones that have changed (i.e. Australia)

Suggest MS include an updated version of the KB-942763 update with the final release of WinXP-SP3.

    hi,

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Our current plan is not to integrate the time zone package with SP3, but instead release a new updated update to windows update. the new package would be installable on SP3.

    Thanks

    Gringo_MVD,

Well just in case you didn't know, there is an utility called Time Zone Editor found on this URL. You can use this utility to add/edit/delete any time zones you want, and not manually on the registry keys.

Thanks a lot Thomas Lee, It is working fine. Best part of this is that it also supports UNICODE so that I can have Time Zone names in Tamil as well.

    Shasank-

Thanks for the insight.  Sounds like a better construct / structure.  Got a timeline on the update to windows update?

The update would be available almost at the same time as SP3 final build goes online.

I have the exact same issue, but I'm trying to run the new Google Outlook Calendar Sync and it give me the error saying "You seem to have outdated timezone information. Please Run Windows Update." So I went to install the time zone patch and it says that the files are incompatible with my version of Windows. The TZupdate didn't hel me. I'm really stuck. Any suggestions???

    Thanks..

See the last (3) posts before yours.  The time zone update will become part of Windows Update for SP3, but not until the "final" build of SP3 is available (or even shortly thereafter).  In other words, when SP3 isn't beta anymore.

Could you PLS confirm your scenario while you update SP3 and Make google Calender Sync?

scenario 1. Set up your google calendar (Schedule your meeting, apointment or something else) on 1 SP2 machine (We call it MA) on which you installed several Time zone updates. And then you deploy another SP2 machine (we call it MB) on which you didn't install as much Time zone updates as on MA. and then you update MB into SP3. You failed to sync google calendar.

scenario 2. You set up google calender and update to SP3 on the exactly same machine. But you un-install one or more Time zone updates before you update up to SP3.

Is the scenario one of above 2? or other scenario ?

    Thanks!

I used TZEDITto fix my Daylight Savings settingsfor my Windows XP SP3 RC2 test install.  It worked great, now I can have the "Automatically adjust clock for DST changes" checked and my time setting is locked to the correct time.

However when I try to do a Time Synchronize using any of the NIST-recommended Time Servers I am always one hour off.
Needless to say I don't automatically do any Time Synchs on this install.  How do I fix the time synch issue?

    Hi Rob,

Double click on the date and time applet (shown on the bottom right) or found inside the control panel, click on the tab "Internet Time", unselect the check box "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server", and click on the Apply button. This should disable the time synchronization.

Also you can set the service "Windows Time" to manual/disable. Please read the articles below for general knowledge. Thanks.

    Just to add to it,

We would have a fresh TimeZone package on Windows Update post SP3 that would set the time zone right. With that package, the timezone would stay intact even after syncronization with the time server.

    Thanks

    Hi Shashank,
Thanks for the info. Just one more request. Is there any possibility include this feature in Windows XP SP3 for a limited user to double click the time at the sytem tray (at the lower right hand corner) to atleast to view the date and time currently if a limited user double clicks the time  "You do not have proper privilage to change the System time". Also it would be easier for the administrators if the time zone updates also included with the service pack. Thanks.

Microsoft released a kb942763 for addessing changes on time zone on my country Venezuela.

That kb942763 was working on XP SP2 but when SP3 was installed with windows update this week, the time zone rolled back to the same as before.

    What should i do?

    thanks

I've tried the Time Zone Editor and for some reason it's not working for me. I've edited the current time zone to reflect the correct time and then I close down the TME but still the time remains unchanged. Any other suggestion?
