When do you believe the stand alone sp3 rtm update will be available for download on Technet and MSDN?  Sometime today?

are you sure, madhon?  is it the regular technet site or the technet subscription site?  I don't see the XP SP3 download at the "Top Downloads" section.  maybe I'm overlooking something...

I agree with some folks here.  Microsoft should have learned from their mistake with how they mis-handled the releasing of Vista SP1 to MSDN and Technet subscribers.

Yes, its on the subscription site.

Since the original XP SP3 RTM announcement thread has been locked, I just wanted to get a clarification about:

"MSDN/Technet - Not yet. This will be available within the next month." which Chris Keroack posted in that thread.

Does that mean that paying subscribers won't have access to the build until after the public download?

As you may recall, Vista SP1 was available to MSDN/TechNet well before the public download.

    Thanks,
    Arneh

Yeah, I saw that post too. That will really suck. Pay all that money and we get screwed. Thanks!

They have it ready, they could easily release it to MSDN today if they really wanted.

Hopefully we wont have the same farce as per Vista SP1 where it was only presure from Technet and MSDN Subscribers that forced them to make it available before it was on the public download center.

The problem is there's no reason, as far as we know, to hold back SP3 from the MSDN/TechNet subscribers. MS's original reason for Vista SP1 was the driver issue and even if they hadn't brought the release forward for those subscribers, it would have been available to MSDN/TechNet at the same time as the public release.

The point being made here is SP3 won't even be available to those paying customers until a later date even when SP3 is made available publicly on April 29th.

When and where will be able to get a CD of Service Pack 3 ?
I find my CD of SP2 indespensable at times.
The window of oppurtunity to procur the Service Pack 2 CD was small ,at least the zero cost window.
I am sure I am not alone in wanting to have the CD version rather than fooling around with downloads onto machines that may not have an internet connection now or ever.

This is Microsoft's idea of how to treat people.  They con you in to paying hard earned money for a subscription with the promise of access before the common public and then they trun around and stick a knife in your back!  Apparently Microsoft speaks with a forked tongue just like the U.S. Federal government.  They promise you anything to get your money, but try to collect on that promise after they have your money.  Their promises are like snowballs in hell - they don't last very long!

I literally cannot believe this! MSDN/Technet users arent getting sp3 until general release date or even later. How do you expect people who subscribe to pay for another year? You did this with vista sp1 and you got completely and utterly slated for it. Then you say oh, we didnt realise there was this demand or some other crappy answer. The manager deciding which releases go on msdn/technet/connect first really needs firing, he obviously doesnt understand your customer's needs. We need to be able to test this out with our software and hardware before deploying to the whole network. The more time the better, if it has rtm'd which the build strings says it was finished on 13th april then it should have been released to msdn/technet people today.

Its like you want more criticism!

Anyone have the filesize in bytes and MD5 hash of the .exe installer and of the integrated .iso yet? The string build is in a screenshot on paul thurott's screenshot collection on here: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xpsp3_rtm_shots.asp

What's the point of my Technet Plus subscription if I have to wait until the public release for a service pack? If SP3 has gone RTM, then why wait? What's the reason?

Microsoft - You are trying very hard to discourage Technet subscriptions.

Why is this even happening? Can they not see that after Vista SP1 there would be an outcry about thier serious lack of respect for thier subscribers. I can't understand why no-one has even attempted to clarify this and why it is the case? If the code was finished on the 13th and you clearly have RTM builds why cant they be added to the subsriber downloads? Why is it some time in "the next month". What a sham! Waste of money!

The original mesage said that it went out to OEM 'and Enterprise customers'.

Speaking from the seat of an EA holder, it isn't available through there either. It should be available for download as we have over 50 locations globally and waiting for a CD shipment from head office will most likely delay it past the 29th of April.

Yea. So just thought I'd chime in and say this to microsoft: you guys are a bunch of f***ing idiots. Amazingly you can't even get it together to have people who pay a *** load of money to you be able to download and deploy it. What's the point of subscribing again? Keep digging a deeper hole.. the botched vista release (sp1 should've been the RTM).. screwing customers... its all got signs of many great companies that have lost their market position in the past. You're not immune and, especially after this last year, good riddance.

Server 2003 SP2 RTM was announced and released (available publicly) on March 13, 2007.

By same day it went RTM, I'm saying that the same day MS announced to the world that SP2 was done, they made it available for all to download. I'm not saying they released it the same day the build was compiled.

    Well, that's just damned ridiculous.
One wonders what is the point of taking out and paying for volume license, TechNet, MSDN et al when it will be available on the web to the great unwashed *before* IT pros who pay MS and subscribe to any/all of the above "premium" services can get it.

I really think MS have "lost the plot/jumped the shark" in the last year or so what with the Vista SP1 debacle and now this.

I work at a large education site and we're seeing increasing numbers of Macs being used by IT Support Staff, teaching staff and students - is it any wonder?

I work for a school district.  We wanted to get the SP3 RTM on machines for 1-2 months of testing before summer so that we could incorporate it in the Summer Maintenance Images.

    Trying to obtain SP3 from a "torrent site" is a sure-fire way to end-up with a non-genuine, malware-packed version!

Actually, I would think that Microsoft would host torrents of all their files.  Afterall, performance is what the whole torrent idea was built around.  As of now, if Microsoft has a million people trying to download the update, the bandwidth per person drops to nothing or it crashes the server.  On the other hand, if they were hosting torrents of their files, each user contributes their mostly unused upload speed to help speed up the swarm.  Eventually the demand wears off and MS servers can push outat full speed again.

Also, I quite often get larger downloads from the VL site that just *** out completely. For instance, I still haven't been able to get the Vista-SP1 downloaded yet.  It gets to around 2mb left and hangs indefinately, and this is with using Microsofts crappy download tool.  The reason I bring this up is that if hosted by torrent, then I wouldn't need to restart the whole download again every damn time to get what was missed, but rather the torrent downloader (I use Azureus) would easily find the bad chunk and download it again or from another source.

As for the time it takes to "load Microsoft's servers", do you even realize how stupid that sounds?  Let's look at this from two angles, one where all the servers are in one location, and another where they are scattered.  Let's assume the file is 600mb also.  (one location) I'm rather sure Microsoft is running gigabit in every location, so copying this to 10000 machines from one machine would take less than 17 hours.   (many locations) I am sure that every location is connected with, at least, a DS3 so copying this to 1000 locations (a high estimate) from one machine would take less than 1.5 days.

OR, they can just seed the torrent on the primary internal server where the secondary servers download and seed the torrent to the public.  It's time for Microsoft to "Grow up" and start using some of this new technology to it's own benefit.

Sorry to rant, but I didn't really like the FUD in your comment...  I figured I would follow your snide remarks with one of my own...

I wouldnt be suprised that ms leaks this to torrent sites either, would save them a fortune in bandwidth. Hopefully a parter/oem employee will leak it as its a joke letting msdn get it AFTER public, not even on the same day but AFTER.

Release SP3 to MSDN/Technet PRIOR to the public release or be ready for not XP to Vista migrations in 2009 but us to push for more Mac OS X deployments.

I am going to be very clear with with this. It is a very bad policy of your organization to not allow people who pay hundreds of dollars (including myself) be able to download releases such as this. I find it rather in poor taste that Microsoft who is supposed to stress quality is even allowing such a policy to be enforced.

That being said tell me who IS Paul Thurrot and WHAT makes him so SPECIAL over the people who invest money in Technet / MSDN to be able to access the RTM XP SP3?! If the torrent leaks make it out before you make this available to MSDN / Technet I will really find this an unforgivable action. You do NOT screw over thousands of people over a release like this.

I'll be willing to bet its leaked to torrent before Microsoft get their act together. And I'll be downloading it from torrent if this is the case.

That's a very bad move. I'm a Windows XP SP3 Techbeta participant, a Technet Plus subscriber, and it isn't worth a bean. I'll be able to download and test the final product after the half of the world got it from torrent sites. Congrats. So annoying.

"To meet high customer demand for Windows Vista Service Pack 1, we have optimized available bandwidth and prioritized MSDN/TechNet delivery channels for Windows Vista SP1 downloads in all Windows languages. Once we have satisfied this demand, we will roll out Windows XP SP3 via MSDN/TechNet"

Time for Microsoft to look at other ways to deploy updates to its paying customers then if it can't handle the load.

Ok I amit its supposition but it seems logical.

Technet and MSDN members are all professionals right ?

You are all very naughty by not taking the insistance of Microsoft that you should upgrade all your systems to Vista.

Microsoft have kindly pushed the Vista SP1 release at you for a while now but you really arent taking notice so its try to push it some more.

The nice new spangly patches will be made for Vista quickly and XP will wait to try and deter you from using the working systems you already have  . This policy will eventually force you to upgrade you naughty people ! Microsoft may even manage to create a large gaping hole in XP systems with a nice automatic update which will cause so many problems on those business systems to finally prise you all off XP and onto Vista.

You must upgrade all your systems to Vista as Microsoft needs to raise a large amount of wonga to cover the costs of the next big party that they forgot to mention in the "final day" video

Ok so its only our guess at the real reasons but i bet its not far from the truth ...

Microsoft… your one of the biggest companies in the world, and you can not supply the bandwidth and other network resources, to accommodate your loyal subscribers?

Ditto I've allready asked for our subscription which is due in the next 2 weeks to be cancelled because we get nothing from Technet when the last two major service packs are available after the public gain access. What on earth do they use our subscriptions to pay for - surely they can setup a few servers with the money they get from our subscriptions. We test release candidate versions of their service packs in order to help them to provide a better product only for them to do this to us.

are you sure, madhon?  is it the regular technet site or the technet subscription site?  I don't see the XP SP3 download at the "Top Downloads" section.  maybe I'm overlooking something...

I agree with some folks here.  Microsoft should have learned from their mistake with how they mis-handled the releasing of Vista SP1 to MSDN and Technet subscribers.

hmmm. Since the MD5 is well-known and shown all over the Internet, it's pretty easy to check that a copy is valid. (MD5 can be beaten, but it's VERY hard).

And so, I agree with those who say that Microsoft should grow up, and start providing via bittorrent. But they won't, the "not-invented here" syndrome applies.

On the other hand, I STRONGLY agree with Carey that patience is a virtue-- you've all TOLD Microsoft right here that you're feeling insulted and financially screwed, now give it a rest and wait a week.

So I'm gonna let lots of other "impatient" people break it first. The RTM is over 100MB larger than the preceeding "Release Candidate, so there's TONS of new code which hasn't been in wide distribution yet. (BSOD and other "fatal error" reports popping up all over seem to confirm this.) I want to apply the Service Pack only once, successfully, on all of the boxen I'm responsible for.... so I'm just gonna wait a while, for co-req patches to be written and provided to us.

It would be nice if Microsoft, and other Companies, went back to creating REAL "release candidates' (instead of applying the label to Beta versions and then releasing an under-distributed, poorly tested "Gold" version containing vast amounts of "new" code). They teach this Release Process to first year college newbies, but "experienced executives" are always pretending that they can get by with breaking the rules-- no matter how many times they shoot their companies in the foot by doing so, they just keep doing it in order to Make a Date.  MS isn;t the only company which does this-- even Linux companies, who *SAY* that they aren't gonna release "until it's ready", are doing it.
