    I'm having a strange issue with the Office Web Apps.   Some users report consistantly not being able to view docx files.   They get "Word App Encountered an Unexpected Error" yet others can view the same fines fine.

    From your description, I understand that some user cannot view docx files, the error message "Word App Encountered an Unexpected Error" was received. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

    This issue was due to a bad install of Silverlight.  Uninstalling and re-installing resolved the issue.

    Not always a bad install of Silverlight.  It works in Firefox but not on IE 8.  It also works on IE in our test system with is http:.  Our production system has the problem with IE 8 and htts:.  Anyone know what IE setting that could be causing this issue?

    I had the same error, but for me restarting the Client machine resolved the issue as in SharePoint logs their were Credentials issues like sp_portalapp with Claims Authentication.

    Even if I change the browser it worked.

    a middle device such as load balancer with compression /acceleration/filtering might cause this issue. when we disabled the compression the issue was resolved.

    Same here, Although a re install did not work.  I'm choosing sharepoint over silverlight at this point in time unless there is another build.  I had roughly the following build: Silverlight 5.1.1
