I've tried opening .doc word files in Word 2010, usually .doc file will open in compatibility mode, but on one of my colleagues computers word does not open files in compatibility mode but open a windows called File Conversion with Windows(default) selected. But the document will not open correctly, all sorts of assorted characters appears.

But when i open the same file from my computer the file opens fine in compatibility mode. There must be a setting somewhere that word opens any .doc file as a default in to compatibility mode?

    Hi,

    Please consider following scenarios:

    - If the Operating System is Windows XP, please follow the steps in the KB article test this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973904

    - If upgrade Office to 2010 from previous version of Office, the problem might occur if some old version registry key still remain in the operating system, please complete uninstall previous version of Office, you can use fix it tool, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179

    - If the problem still persist, see also: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

The Operating System is an Windows 7 32bit upgrade.

Do you think i should still uninstall Office 2010 and run the Fix it tool?

The machine was running Win XP, but the upgrade was from scratch deleting the old Windows folder in the process.

    Hi,

The problem might occur if file association corrupted after upgrade Operating System.

If the problem only affect Word program, please check this out: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

If other Office program has same issue, please try to repair Office 2010 from control panel.

If you cannot find Office 2010 feature in control panel, you can run setup.exe from Office installation source folder, and then select repair.

    Best regards.
