AnswerMOSS Farm Configuration for 2 WFE / 2 Application Server / 2 SQL Server structure

    Hello,

We have MOSS farm structure planned out as 2 load-balanced WFE servers, 2 application servers and a clusterred database with 2 SQL servers. With this structure, what is the preferred configuration regarding services running on the 2WFE and 2 applications servers? More specifically, I would like some best pratice type of recommendations on what services should be running on which server.

Additionally, Please verify the following installation plan and let me know if I should do it in any other way:

    1) Do a Complete installation for the first MOSS instance and run the configuration wizard, which will create a farm and host central admin site

    2) Do a complete installation for the second MOSS instance and join the server farm.

    3) Install the first instance of WFE and join the server farm.

    4) Install the second instance of WFE and join the server farm.

    5) Configure the services on the two application servers. (need to know how to distribute the services)

    6) Create SSP

    7) Install SP1 (should I install WSS/MOSS SP1 earlier?)

    8) Install Reporting Service on one of the application server.

We plan to install SQL Reporting Service on one of the application servers and configure the MOSS-SSRS integrated mode. I would like to know if this is a correct plan or it is better to install it on one of the WFE servers. Please advice if there is any recommended approach on the installation of Reporting Services.

If there is any detailed document on this topic, please advice.

    Thanks,
    Jun

With 2 WFE, 2 APP and 2 clustered SQL, I would recommend having the WFE's running just the web applications and incoming email, if you are going to have that in your farm.

For the app servers, I would install excel services on one and spread out the search services between the two.  With two APP servers, you can also set up document conversion launcher on one, and document conversion load balancer on the other.

Your steps 1 through 8 look fine, but I would recommend getting your hands on the install of MOSS that already has SP1 installed on it and just using that from the start:  http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2008/03/07/moss-2007-with-sp1-slipstream-officeserverwithsp1-exe-released.aspx  I've used it in my last 3 builds and it has worked just great.

In regards to SQL Reporting Services, I would think that you would want to install it on an application server, not a WFE.  It may depend on your architecture though, but I think as long as you can browse and connect to your sites from an app server, you should be ok.

    Hope this helps!

I think tha best installation is:

2 WFE/Query Server in Network Balance
1 WFE/Index Server/Search Server (using the WFE ONLY for crawling! non for user! this reduce network traffic)
    1 Search Server/Excel Service/Reporting Service
    2 SQL Clustered

I agree with David, install MOSS with SP1 integrated.
