    Hi All,

I have a site on WSS 3.0 that needs to be migrated to SharePoint 2010 environment. WSS 3.0 is upgraded to SP2. Before the migration, I need to configure SharePoint 2010 on the same server with out disturbing the WSS 3.0 live site.

I think, I can go with database attach upgrade but I am not sure whether I run into any issue because Site is on WSS 3.0 not on MOSS 2007. But, Configuring SharePoint 2010 on the same server rising me some questions that I may run into some complications installing and configuring on the same server box.

    Your rely would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    -Gautham

    Take a look at: http://technet.microsoft.com/library/cc263447(office.14).aspx

You'll be performing an In-place upgrade, not database-attach.  Also your existing server must be running 64bit Server 2008 or higher, and your database server must be running SQL 2005 SP3 64bit or higher.

    Hi Trevor,

Thanks for quick reply. I am trying to upgrade from WSS 3.0 NOT MOSS 2007. The link you provide me is for MOSS 2007 to SP 2010. I have multiple in this environment already. Looking for something for WSS3.0 to SharePoint 2010. Hope my question is clear.

    Thanks,

The same instructions apply to WSSv3 as they do MOSS 2007, just ignore any SSP reference.

Below is reference from the same link Trevor has given

    http://technet.microsoft.com/library/cc263447(office.14).aspx

Upgrading from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0?

Use the database attach upgrade approach to attach and upgrade the content databases from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to SharePoint Server 2010. This process upgrades the data in the content databases, but does not transfer any farm settings.

    hope this helps you

I am sorry, I didn't read through the page completely. I was just reading the first paragraph and thought it is for MOSS 2007 to SP 2010.

So, My env. is in WSS 3.0 32 bit. I think, only option for me is Database attach upgrade. My client want me to configure SharePoint 2010 on the same server and do migrate. Is this OK to do like this? I am just wondering if i get any errors when I try to install SharePOint 2010 on the same server. Please provide me some info?

    Thanks,

    -Gautham

If your OS is also 32bit (or Server 2003), then you'll have to reinstall the OS.  In this case, the procedure would be a database-attach upgrade as you're essentially "moving servers" by doing an OS reinstall.

Make sure you test the database-attach upgrade in a separate environment.

    Hi Trevor,

THanks for your prompt replies. One last ques: If my wss3.0 env. is a 64 bit then do I run into any issues installing and configuring SharePoint2010 on the same server and migrate?.

    THanks,

If your OS is Server 2008 x64 and you're running SQL 2005 SP3 x64 or higher, then you can certainly install SP 2010 on the same server without reinstalling the OS.
