I have a SharePoint 2010 list form that I want to customize in Infopath. But when I try to customize it, I get the following error:
The SharePoint list form can't be customized with InfoPath because fields of an unsupported data type are marked as required, or because fields are corrupted. In SharePoint, try deleting the columns or editing the column properties to remove the required attribute.
- Employee (BusinessData)The field in question is an external data lookup field using BCS. Is this unsupported in InfoPath 2010? Is there a workaround to get Infopath to customize SharePoint lists that have a BCS lookup field in them?

Friday, April 27, 2012 9:41 PMExternal Content Types using BCS are absolutely supported in InfoPath 2010. This issue may be related with specific field or it's configuration. I would suggest you to try testing with some other external content types/fields to zero-in the actual problem area.

No luck with other external lists.
I have a sharepoint list with a single column that is an external data lookup field from a SQL database. When I try to customize the form in Infopath it tells me it's an unsupported data type.

Unfortunally, its by design.
See this Using External column type in InfoPath 2010, for example.
