The main difference is that the Basic installation *always* installs the embedded version of SQL Server 2005 on the same server. (This has a 4GB database size limit).

The Advanced installation will only install this database system if you choose the "single-server" option. If not you are able to specify an existing copy of SQL Server 2K or 2005 which may be on a different server.

There is at least one minor thing (location of something) that the Advanced installation also offers but the above is the main difference.

How to check? Well look at which database system MOSS is using and where it is installed.

When you do Basic installation MOSS installs SQL Server 2005 Express edition and uses it. So look onto the instance of the SQL on the server and if it says SQLExpress 'that is the instance name used by SQL Express I think' than that means that you did the basic install.

I dont think there is any way of knowing you did a basic install or advanced install.

The last time i did a basic install was in 2006 so I dont remember clearly but if I am not wrong when you do a basic install a default SSP is automatically provisioned with a default web app and web app host for my site as well is also provisioned and if I am not wrong the default web app's Site Collection template is Collaboration Publishing Template.

I dont know I was of any help tp you or not, if not I tried mates.

    The Main Differences are:

    BASIC INSTALLATION:

    1. Embedded SQL Server Express always!
    2. No Farm possibility (only standalone, all-inclusive server)
    3. 4 GB SQL Limit

    ADVANCED INSTALLATION:

    1. Choose your SQL
    2. Create Farm
    3. No limit

For find what kind of installation you have, If you can Add Server in the farm you have an Advanced Instllation, if not you have a Basic Installation.

When you perform a Basic installation, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (4 GB Support) is automatically installed. With All services on one server. You can create only one farm in Basic Installation.

When you perform a Advance installation, Sharepoint ask for saprate installation of SQL Server 2000 or 2005. You can create multiple farm in Advance Installation. In Advance Installation you can use one or more computers to host the following server roles:

    Application server
    Front-end Web server
    Database server

There seem to be an awful lot of people who don't read previous answers when they post !

(I posted at the same time as M Hassan Raza. The next post was 90 mins later and your post even later).

If posting additions to previous posts (farm in the case of Francesco, although that ought to have been understood from my post) post just the addition.

    Hi,

Maybe this is dumb question. Can we install MOSS with SQL 2005 Express but choose the advance setting instead of Basic? Meaning I need to install the SQL 2005 Express Edition first if not mistaken.

    Is it workable?

    yes, you can!

it's supported but only if is sigle server installation! even if you can, you must not add other server to the farm.

There's obviously some confusion in the past three posts between the (official name) "Windows Internal Database" (which is an embedded version of SQL Server Express 2005) and "SQL Server Express 2005".

    MNHaizam asked

Can we install MOSS with SQL 2005 Express but choose the advance setting instead of Basic? Meaning I need to install the SQL 2005 Express Edition first if not mistaken.

Francesco assumed he meant the "Windows Internal Database" (i.e. the embedded version of SQL Server 2005 Express) and answered

it's supported but only if is single server installation! even if you can, you must not add other server to the farm.

This is true when talking about the Windows Internal Database as you get that installed both when you run the Basic installation and when you run the Advanced Installation and specify single-server.

BUT then MNHaizam says that he has "already installed SQL 2005 Express".

This makes it clear that (as you can't install the "Windows Internal Database" version of it without also installing WSS 3.0), he must be talking about the real SQL Server 2005 Express.

    -------------

    Long story, short answer.

Yes you can specify that database system when you install WSS 3.0 using the Advanced Installation option only then you must NOT select the single-server option !

(Although why you should use a size-restricted version rather than the Windows Internal Database version is a good question)

    Mike,

Thanks for the short answer and the explanation.

YES. i'm talking about the real SQL 2005 Express edition.FYI, i got the ERROR when specify the Configuration Database Setting ( I choose advance>complete.. put "servername" on the DB server and DBname,Acc and Pwd)

my question is, am i doing a right thing? Can we specific DB name for the SQL 2005 Express?
    This really confuse me.

    Really appreciate your help.
