    Hello David,

It's depend on your businees need.

Below SharePoint version are available in market:

    1. WSS which is free.

    2. MOSS 2007

    3. SharePoint 2010 foundation,standard and enterprise version.

    4. SharePoint 2013

All version are license version expect for WSS and SharePoint 2010 foundation.

If your businees need completed from WSS and SharePoint 2010 foundation then use it, If your businees need like custom site defenition, infopath, custom workflow etc then you need to use license version.

If you haven't installed yet, you would likely want to base your decision on the 2013 versions--but maybe you want to roll out soon, in which case you might choose to base your decision on the 2010 versions.

You essentially have four choices: SharePoint Foundation, SharePoint Server, SharePoint Online from a hosting company and Office 365. (Don't forget about SharePoint Online/Office 365. The benefit of not having to run your own server--and worry about backup--should not be overlooked.)

If you're looking to run on-premises, SharePoint Foundation is free (with a Windows Server license) so it's a great way for a small company to start. However, as Mukesh wrote, it depends on your business needs. There are some features that require SharePoint Server.

My advice, try the O365 preview of SharePoint 2013 and install the SharePoint Foundation preview. Compare those to your business needs.
