Developer Machine Configration for SharePoint 2010

In SharePoint 2010 is it possible to develop applications from a developer machine which does not have the Sharepoint server?if yes thn plz tell methe developer environmnet to be configured for application development isn harepoint2010 like how using Visual studio 2010 i can cahive it , whts Os is required on developer machine 7 other hw/sw requirements

In short - you need to install SharPoint Server on development machine - but you may do this on 64bit Vista or Windows 7. Another option is to install SharePoint Server as Virtual Machine using VMWare, but you will have to develop (run Visual Studio) on that VM.
