    Hi

On my front page, I have a webpart for Daily Dilbert. I only want staff to see this, and not students.. so I create an audience.

but if I want to add another web part for students, maybe quote of the day or something..  I have to insert it below the dilbert webpart.. which means it appears further down the screen and is not visible within the normal resolution.

is there any way I can occupy the same space for multiple webparts?

    It seems logical to me..

You should be able to put your audienced web parts into the same web part zone to accomplish what you want.  Is this what you are doing?

that's what I'm trying to do, but in SharePoint Designer, the web part occupies the space, so how can I paste another webpart over the top of that?

You don't paste over the top.  Put one below the other on the page, they cannot occupy the same space.  If UserA is an audience of the Dilbert web part only, when the page is loaded, that's all they will see at the top of the zone.  If UserB is an audience of the Quote web part, this will be loaded at the top of the zone only and if UserC is an audience to both, they will see both web parts in the order you've added them to the page.
