Answered Errors During "re-role" of IIS7 0x80070643

    Is re-role a word.

Having problem accessing VMRC from my vista workstation to my 2008 X64 Server with Virtual Server 2005 R2 installed

Then could not access Virtual Server at all via web interface.

Fiddled with Authentication, and it got worse.

Panic not I thought, remove virtual server, un-role IIS, and start again, except it will not. I am unable to re-role IIS at all

    Very odd I thought.

This has been raised before, however that person opted for a reinstall before it got anywhere. I really dont want to do that.

    Hi,

Please collect the CBS log under "%systemroot%\logs\CBS", Application event logs as well as System event logs in Event viewer and send them to me via v-morche@microsoft.com for further troubleshooting this IIS installation issue.

If there are more than one CBS log residing under that path, please install IIS again and only send the latest CBS log to me.

    Have a nice day!

    Best wishes

Well. During the night and long day that followed, "WAS" was the culprit. When I had  removed IIS Role (and deleted inetpub), it seems the Windows Process Activation Service was falling over (it uses something in inetpub tree (history or Logs). and so IIS7 would not install. - seems logical in hindsight

I was on the verge of Getting the boot disk out, and said no -  one more try

    • de-feature "WAS" Windows Process Activation Service (note it deleted more of the IIS roles or said it was)
    • re-role IIS7 & IIS6 and all subroles - worked okay
    • re-feature "WAS" Windows Process Activation Service - worked okay

IIS7 and IIS6 are up and running

Virtual Server 2005 R2 is now running again

The Original reason that one workstation could not connect to VMRC://myhost IS RESOLVED - hooray

WAS seems to work - hooray

Along the way I seem to have managed to loose the DHCP Binding for both IP4 and IP6, and fixing that by uninstalling and reinstalling the Network card and fresh network setup, then clobbered the Virtual Server Network connection - so I had to delete the network.vnc file (the other vnc) - oh it takes a while.

So in doing all that I managed to get all the IPv6 working and the new IIS sites both default and virtual Server all work in IPv6 as well, the only thing I cant get to work is DHCP on IPv6 as I have no IPv6 Router. Still I learned to use netsh too to give my W2k3 a proper IPv6 Address.

So despair not dear reader - a happy ending

Their appears (not unreasoably) to be a tight relationship between "WAS" and IIS - this perhaps need to reflect in pre-re-role testing so users get a fuller less painful experience Morgan.

    Thanks again

I had the same exact problem and it was causing my blood pressure to rise. I'd like to thank  Jimbo1199 for sharing the answer. Removing WPAS before re-installing the IIS7 role is what's needed. Interestingly, when I re-installed IIS7 role it also automatically re-installed WPAS.

I am getting a similar error trying to install exchange 2007 but... I think the problem is with the installer nothing to do with exchange.  This is what I am getting:

Product: Windows Internal Database -- Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

I get this error trying to install anything that requires the windows internal database.

I have Windows 2008 server with SP1.  I tried installing the database by it self and still the same results: Error 1719

    What can I do????

I had this error and I re-formatted and re-installed 64 bit 2008 Server Standard and still get the error.
If I de-feature WAS and go to install IIS, it ends up saying that both failed.  If I add the WAS feature first and then try to install IIS I get the installation errors that Jim posted above.

Narrowing it down, I tried to install the Windows Internal Database.
"Attempt to install Windows Internal Database failed with error code 0x80070654.  This installation package could not be opened.  Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"

Hi all. I'm having the exact same problem as Jimbo1199:

    Installation failed.

    Roles:

Error: Attempt to install Request Filtering failed with error code 0x80070643.  Fatal error during installation
Error: Attempt to install Request Monitor failed with error code 0x80070643.  Fatal error during installation
Error: Attempt to install HTTP Logging failed with error code 0x80070643.  Fatal error during installation

          Health and Diagnostics

          Security
             Request Filtering
          Performance
             Static Content Compression
       Management Tools
          IIS Management Console

    Features:

    Windows Process Activation Service
Error: Attempt to install Configuration APIs failed with error code 0x80070643.  Fatal error during installation
Error: Attempt to install Process Model failed with error code 0x80070643.  Fatal error during installation
The following features were not installed:
       Process Model
       Configuration APIs

I have tried removing all server roles and features, including Windows Internal Database which was installed. I'm at a loss as to why this continues to fail on the install. I am using the Server Manager to install the role/feature. I can email CBS/event logs/servermanager logs for anyone willing to assist me in this.

The box I have is Win2k8 server standard, SP1 64bit with 4Gb ram. It's joined to an AD domain. I emailed Morgan at the above email address a couple of days ago however no response as of yet. I'd really like to fix this without having to rebuild the box.

    Cheers
    Brenton

I found removing the Windows Process Activation Service and re-installing IIS fixed this issue for me...

    Jimbo1199 solution worked perfectly!

Uninstall WAS (Windows Process Activation Service).

It will force you to reinstall it when you try to add the IIS role, but everything should install correctly then.

    Thanks Jimbo.

Was on the point of re-installation when I found this thread - fixed all OK.

Pity that in 2+ years the issue is still there and your fix is not documented as a possible solution to error 0x80070643

I was having the same problems... IIS install failed, Windows updates failed, WAS not installed but install failed...

Check to see if Windows Install service is running, it was set to manual on my W2K8 R2 box, once I started it up everything worked.
