Unanswered Can't do a D backup, says D drive is full. Need to make a restore disk and points!

My HP that came with Vista installed so no disks.  I've messed around with the computer trying to make a restore disk, made it alot worse, and eventually it all locked up.  I finally broke down and did a full system restore in safe mode, wiped everything out and reset to factory condition.  (Is there ANY way to get back my lost photo's?)

So anyway, everything came up fresh and new, except the system restore D drive display is red and keeps flagging that is is full.  I tried to transfer all the stuff out of it onto a disk and an external hard drive.  It just keeps flashing that the memory is critically low.  It then routes me to the recycle bin as if it is full.  There is nothing in there. I've done memory and hardware scans and they all say they are good.  In the Vista Total care screen, I think the D drive icon used to be there.   Not it is not.

From what I've gleaned from the help desk and postings here, there might be a CD partition problem,  and D may have been backed-up to itself.  How do i clear this mess???

    Thank you so much!

When you use the option to 'reset to factory condition', this completely wipes the hard drive during the restore process. There is probably no way to recover any of the files.

This 'D' drive sounds like the 'Recovery Drive' that HP placed on the computer. This is the drive that is used when you use the 'Restore to factory condition' option.

It also sounds like the Windows 'System Restore' component may have been enabled for this drive. System Restore should not be used on that drive, since these recovery drives are usually only big enough to hold the recovery files.

You need to turn the System Restore off on this drive.

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools. Click the System Restore shortcut.

In the System Restore window, click the link to 'Open System Protection'.

In the System Protection' window, remove the check mark from the 'D' drive.

    Click Apply / OK.

    Exit System Restore.

    Restart the computer.

This will remove the System Restore files from the 'D' drive. This should stop the low disk space messages.

Need help.  I keep getting message that Recovery Disk Backup "D" is full.  D is not checked under System restore settings, only C.

I can't tell what is in the backup disk because the files only have names with mixes of letters and numbers, and when I try to open a file, I keep getting a page that says "Warning....about damaging disk."

You're help in resolving this issue is appreciated.
