DVD playback Choppy

Ok. as of 2 days ago and DVD's I put in will play but they are choppy in both audio and video. it also effects system usage, as my mouse goes super slow when moving it. I can play saved videos just fine though. I played Disc's on WMP and media center and media direct. all to the same effect. now I downloaded PowerDVD and the discs play fine. so that says its not the drive. it has to be a codex or something. Please help me correct this issue in WMP.
