SharePoint Foundation 2010 and AD RMS
SharePoint 2010 integrates with AD RMS.
This allows document libraries in SharePoint to take advantage of RMS content protection. In all versions of SharePoint 2010 the IRM configuration is performed. Then the document libraries may support RMS protection.
SharePoint uses file protectors to handle encrypting content. What most folks do not realize is SharePoint Foundation 2010 does not include file protectors. Custom file protectors may be created and used. However the creation, implementation, use, and support of custom file protectors is not a Microsoft/SharePoint issue.
"SharePoint Foundation 2010 does not include protectors for any file formats. If your organization plans to use IRM to protect files in lists and libraries, your server administrator must install protectors for any file formats for which you want to manage rights."
