With a Picture Library, users can easily send pictures (one or more) in an email (embedded in the body or as an attachment) or automatically add them to a Word document. With an Asset Library, users must download the files and manually create the email / document. Both have the option email a link to the file.
Whizinc: you would have been welcome to add this argument to the article!
Excellent Margriet ! Thanks for sharing ..
Microsoft Office Picture Manager can only connect to Picture Libraries. This is a pro for Picture Library and a con for Asset Library. The fact that Picture Manager cannot update SharePoint metadata is a con for Picture Manager.
As noted Asset Library does not have a Slideshow view, more importantly it is missing the Filmstrip view that Picture Library make available.
Asset Library without Picture Manager or Filmstrip View support has no efficient method to find images based on viewing images.
Picture Library without Datasheet View has no efficient method to manage bulk metadata.
In my humble opinion we are in between an efficient out of box solution to manage images within SharePoint 2010.
