Would you choose server moving forward, or return to peer to peer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a client with Server 2011 Essentials. There are only 2 users, owner and his wife, and they have 4 computers between them (excluding the server). Currently they use a domain, Office 365, and DNS runs from the server. The server also runs Peachtree, Quickbooks, and a few other minor accounting programs. Terabytes of files are stored on the server (about 3TB). There is no chance that they will bring on more employees.

I think a server for him is overkill, and more management moving forward than what is necessary. My thought is to replace the server with a high end desktop (with RAID drives), Windows 10 Professional, remove the other workstations from the domain, and then work as a peer to peer environment.

Would you agree, or would you talk me out of this?

    Thanks for your advice,

    Brady

  • I question raid drives in a low maintenance situation. They add complexity and replacing the drives when they fail adds cost of finding matching drives. Having a continuous backup solution is more important in my opinion, which is where Essentials 2016 shone. Unfortunately I can't recommend Essentials 2019, because they removed the things that made it essential.

Do the accounting programs just store files on the file server? If they have services that need to be installed, that can limit your choices..

  • The other problem with raid is that often no one notices a problem until multiple drives have failed.

A Data Center, whee you have large quantities of everything, raid has a place, but in a one-off location, it is more of a keyword that gets slung around easily.

  • hi,

I think we need server essentials to integrate O365 , end domain user need anywhere access function to remote access to server essentials . we need central plan backup feature for client computers and server essentials etc. so server essential 2016 is good choice.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
because there are some function disappear ,so we need to spend some time and money to accept new server 2019 essentials.I think you need one win10(1709 or above) or a member server to install admin center to manage your client computers.we need third party central backup or azure backup to replace essentials dashboard client backup function ,you need purchase ssl certificate for your VPN or RD gateway and so on.

if we only can buy Windows Server 2019 Essentials, we can check if we can downgrade current version to server 2016 essentials. Windows Server 2019 Essentials may be downgraded to previous version of Windows Server Essentials. if you want to downgrade server 2019 essentials to server 2016 essentials ,you need downgrade key to active server 2016 essentials.
You can try to obtain a downgrade key by calling Microsoft directly:

  • No services needed beyond Quickbooks services, which run well on a Windows 10 desktop.

I will take a look at the 2016 Essentials option, but am still heavily considering dropping the server and going pure Workgroup peer-to-peer with strong backup.
