Device Encryption RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any plan to implement device encryption on Windows Phone by simply activating the PIN?

Currently you need to have the device managed and encryption activated via MDM.

  • To my knowledge, this is only available through MDM. I will look into this and respond with a firm answer.

  • Bitlocker encryption can be enabled in 2 ways, either through the Exchange ActiveSync policy RequireDeviceEncryption or through a device management policy through a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution. Microsoft's MDM is called Intune.

  • So no plans to let a stand alone phone be encrypted by just activating a setting the way other mobile operating systems do.

Microsoft has decided that the way to avoid cooperating with requests to decrypt a phone is to not allow encryption in the first place.  IOW, if you are a small company or an individual user and want an encrypted phone you will have to leave Microsoft.
