Bitlocker key has changed RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • On a windows 10 laptop the Bitlocker Recovery key being requested is not the one we have.

The laptop has been working for a few years and we use a USB to unlock bitlocker on start up.

The USB is no longer working. We typed in the recovery key, but this has not worked either. The key is backed up, so we have checked, and this is the key we have always used.

Looking at the laptop again, has a different identity to our key. I have no idea how this has happened. It worked yesterday, and the user does not have admin rights to change this. Any help welcome

  • If the recovery ID changes, that can only mean, the drive was re-encrypted or someone deleted the old recovery key and created a new one.

Your only hope is that you can recover the key file from USB on another machine. open explorer, make system files and hidden files visible and look for a .bek file.

Copy it to another stick and try to boot with that stick connected. If that doesn't work, either, the drive was possibly re-encrypted by another admin that you are not aware of.
