Windows 10 Free Upgrade Error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm getting an error 0x80070002 with the message, windows was unable to find the installation file "boot.wim". I checked and both boot.wim and install.wim files are in the folder "$Windows.~BT which silently downloaded onto my computer under C drive as a free windows 10 upgrade.

I then decrypted install.ESD file to extract ISO out of it. Copy both boot.wim and install.wim out of the ISO image and replace it inside Sources folder in $Windows.~BT, re-ran the setup and now it's giving me a new error that installation folder not found.

Can someone please tell me what's going on and how to fix it?

  • If you receive Windows Update error 80070002 while checking for updates, you need to remove the temporary update files that Windows uses to identify updates for your computer. To remove the temporary files, stop the Windows Update service, delete the temporary update files, restart the Windows Update service, and then  try to check for Windows updates again.
