Can't get back to original Task Manager RRS feed

  • Question

  • The help file says to simply click "Replace Task Manager" to have it be the default. That seems to have worked. However, I want to go back to the original Task Manager and the help file says to simply click what should now say "Restore Task Manager". But, that's not what it says. It still says "Replace Task Manager" even though it's already running. And, clicking that does nothing. This is on Windows 7.

    Thanks

  • Hi RWS Webman,
you'll find under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\taskmgr.exe a new string value with the name "debugger".
Delete the debugger value and taskmgr should be available again.

  • That folder is empty. There are no values in there.

    Thank you.

  • Thats the way how the feature works.

Could you please open a powershell prompt and fire up this:
    Get-ChildItem -Path "HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\taskmgr.exe*"

  • I ran the powershell command: Get-ChildItem -Path "HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\taskmgr.exe*"
    Didn't make any difference.
    Thanks anyway.

  • It doesn't make any difference because it just list the reg values. I'm just wondering about that you get no output.

    That's really odd.

  • a little Procmon log should quickly show the problem..

Can you grab a short Procmon trace while you invoke the Task Manager?

    HTH
