DaRT 10 has no Windows Defender. Fine! But where is it in WinPE? RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is the line from the TechNet Library article for DaRT 10:

Windows Defender is now part of the Windows 10 Preinstallation Environment (PE) image

Ok.  But where is it in WinPE?  I have 2 images of WinPE (1-32-bit, 1-64-bit, both created by the Windows 10 ADK and Windows 10 version of PE, both mounted for network boot via WDS) but there's no guidance in the help on where to find Defender in the images.  There's no writeup in the help about it being an optional component, and I'm looking in all of the Program Files folders for a Windows Defender subfolder and none exist.  Where is it then?  I'm looking for MSMPENG and MPCMDRUN and neither file exists on a stock Windows 10 PE image.  So where is Defender?

  • We published an article over a year ago stating that even 8.1 DaRT users should move to Defender Offline:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2958104

If you have the DaRT Defender tool deployed, they should instead use the Windows Defender Offline (WDO) protection image for malware detection. This applies to all currently supported versions of DaRT. These versions include DaRT 7, DaRT 8, and DaRT 8.1, together with their service packs.
