MS Word 16 - word count differentiation between non-Asian words and Asian characters gone?

Question
-
The word count in Word used to provide a differentiation between non-Asian words and Asian characters (once the support for East Asian languages was turned on). With version 16 this seems to have disappeared: Now I only get word and character counts.
Because I work in the translation field this ability to refine word counts is vital. It's really important to know how many non-Asian words are in a document that's mixed with Asian characters, like a translation where English and Japanese are mixed in the same document.
I sent a report via the smiley face and have been waiting for it to come back in incremental upgrades, but it doesn't seem to be happening.
Is it just me, or has this feature been removed? If this is a problem related to specific installs, has anyone come across a solution?

Hi,
I tested with Office for Mac 16.12 on MacOS High Sierra version 10.13.3. Yes, I can reproduce the issue, there is no Asian characters in Word Count feature.
If you are always using Word Count feature, I think maybe you can consider to revert back to 15.x version for Word for Mac 2016. You can follow the article below to do it:

Hi,
In Word for Mac 2016, please do the following settings:
Click Word > Preferences > East Asian Languages, click the drop-down list to select an Asian language. Restart Word for Mac.
Then you can open your document and click Word Count button in Review tab to count the Asian words.
Best Regards,
Winnie Liang

Thanks Winnie!
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I have enabled Asian language support:
[Tried to post a screenshot, but the system refused it.]
I just tried disabling it and re-enabling it, and the result is the same:
[Tried to post a screenshot, but the system refused it.]
The lines for 'Non-Asian words' and 'Asian characters' are not showing up. This is happening on two different computers, both running the same (latest) versions of macOS and Word.
I assume from your reply that this might be a problem unique to my installation, so would you suggest reinstalling Word, or even the whole Office suite? Or are there other things that might be happening?

Thanks again Winnie!
Word version: 16.11
macOS version: 10.13.3
The screenshot problem is because I'm a new forum member. I followed the instructions regarding verifying myself, so maybe I'll be able to post screenshots soon.
As a test, here are the images I tried to post before:

Thanks again Winnie!
Sad to hear that the 'Non-Asian words' and 'Asian characters' differentiation is missing from Word 16, but it's a relief to know it's not just me.
Thanks too for the information about reverting to 15. So far I've been managing but if I hit a critical problem it's good to know there's an option.
I'll also use the feedback feature to keep sending requests to fix this! It seems very odd that it's gone.

Thanks for you understanding :)
Not sure why this feature is not working currently. Your feedback on Office for Mac is highly appreciated. To submit a feedback to Word for Mac team, we can use the following method:

I signed up just to reply to this thread and report that I am experiencing the same as above. Asian character count used to work before one of the Office updates released around the end of 2017, and then just disappeared. Similar to above, I need to use the Asian character count for translation work, and it is making things difficult without it (I actually run Windows in a virtual machine to run other translation software, and have to use the Windows version of Word to get the Japanese character count - introducing several more steps to what should otherwise be a simple one-click function in Mac Word).
Not sure if it helps, but I have discovered that if I change my entire macOS system language to Japanese the Asian character count is shown in the Word count box. However, revert back to English system language and it is gone again, without changing any settings in Word (East-Asian languages is enabled in both cases). For note, running the system in Japanese introduces other issues so I need to use English for the system language.
I don't consider reverting back to a previous version of the software a viable solution to a feature that is so basic and worked fine. Why has it disappeared, and why is it so hard to bring it back considering the feature is there when the system language is changed? There have been numerous updates since the Asian character count first disappeared, but the feature still hasn't been reinstated. This is a serious bug and a major quality assurance failure.

I ultimately ended up reverting to Word 15 because I also started experiencing display glitches in revision tracking (revision marking disappeared except for a line in the margin with a different colour from my settings, and there seemed to be no way to quickly get it back). Word 16 ended up being too broken for me to use it in a work environment.
I wondered if switching the system language would do anything, but I didn't have time to try it out (switching the system language tends to bust all my preferences in Word). Thanks for that point! I previously suffered from the bug of East Asian language settings not working if the system was running as UK English, so I've had to use US English as my system language since Word 15 came out.

Just wanted to update this thread to indicate that the latest version of Word (16.35) has restored the differentiation between non-Asian words and Asian characters in the word count. I'm very pleased! Thank you!
